Can someone give me criteria with which to judge the quality of submission directories.
-
The general advice is the SEOmoz community is not to bother with low quality submission directories. Makes sense to me as there existence seems solely to manipulate search rankings, which google doesn't like.
So what are some clear and actionable criteria to distinguish between a directory worth spending time on and one that is not worth spending time on?

Another good indication is whether or not they link to your competitor. I mostly find directories from looking at competitors' back link profiles. Most of them are industry specific and, assuming they are still maintained, worth the couple of minutes it takes to submit.

One thing we look at is if the page your link is on is indexed in Google and if the cache date is recent. Also if there are too many other links on the page, your link juice can be greatly diluted. Seomoz' list of top directories is also helpful.

Sure I've got two:

One of the sites I'm looking to build links for is optimizing for "personal trainer", or more specifically "minneapolis personal trainer". Would it be worth it to bother with these directories for a personal training website?

Hey Jesse
In a nutshell, relevance and quality.
No point going after general purpose directories and there is equally no point if it is a free for all.
If there are high quality, discerning, topical directories in your industry that actually serve a purpose, then, go for it. Also, whilst most topically diverse directories are a waste of time there may be some decent local directories worth considering if you serve a small geographic area.
As ever, there is no exact answer, it depends on the business and various other factors such as what geographical area that business operates in.
Want to throw the link out there? Maybe we can do a bit of a case study and see whta is about?

Do links from such sites as TripAdvisor give any weight or support for SEO
And what about other sites like quora or other niche forums/blogs where one might leave answers, with a link to their profile, which has a link back to the owner's website? _Cindy

Should I pay to be in the Yahoo! Directory or whatever it is now?
I've been trying to find a definite answer and have had no luck. The $300 a myear isn't an issue, but if being in the directory ads no value I'd just as well keep that money.

Removing Links From Spammy Directories
Hi all, I just wanted to check with you all about removing links from spammy directories. We have 100s of links from directories like this http://www.groundanchors.co.uk/ all the same layout and registered to the same person. I just wanted to know if our rankings will be affected in any way by removing these links - bearing in mind there are 100s of them. Many thanks.

What do you consider a low authority link directory
Dear All, I would like to weed out the low authority link directories that harm my site. Can someone explain me how you determine a low authority link directory? Do you look at "page auth." and "domain auth"? And do you consider all the links pointing to your site with a "page auth." and "domain auth" lower then - let's say 40 - as a low authority link directory? Thank you for your answers in advance! Regards, Thomas

Backlinks: What are they really and how can I create them.
I am relatively new to the SEO world, and I want to build backlinks linking to our main site. My preferred way to create backlinks is by adding them in my blog comments or forum responses. I am an active participant in a large number of blogs/forums related to our field and I would like to add relevant backlinks in the comments/answers I post. I originally thought that a backlink was just a link, but none of the links that I have added to blogs like that have been recognized as backlinks. https://www.dynaread.com/ Why is this so? I know now that good backlink would be something like: Dynaread is a science based dyslexia remediation program for older struggling readers. However I have no idea how to add this types of links to blog comments or forum pages where there is no link tool. Do I have to do something with HTML? Please explain briefly what a backlink really is and most importantly how I can create them. Thank you in advance for your help! Joy P.S if you have suggestions about some resources where I can learn more about the subject please let me know. I love to learn more.

Submitting to Directories
What do you look for when submitting to directories? I'm going through the Web Directories list that SEOMoz has put out and trying to decide which are the best. I'm just wondering if anybody has any suggestions as far as what to look for before submitting. I know PageRank is kind of an old metric but I do seem to see a correlation between PageRank and directory cost. If I submit to a directory category with a PR of 4 or 5 it seems like it will cost me anywhere between $50-$300.

Looking to partner with a Quality Link Builder
I have a number of clients, but don't have the time, energy or desire to spend my time building links. I'm looking to partner with someone looking to make some ca$h by helping me accumulate quality links for my clients (at an affordable price). Any referrals would be appreciated. If this type of post is inappropriate or violates any policy, then I would like to change my submission to: "What's the best way to find a partner to assist my link-building efforts?" ....not looking for an SEO firm's sales pitch. Thanks! BR

Help me understand the gap between DMOZ and the Google Directory?
I have seen other sites showing up in OSE with backlinks from both DMOZ and Google Directory. We are in DMOZ, and our backling is showing for that in OSE, but i don't understand how to get added to the Google directory? When i go to the appropriate category, and click "submit link" it just takes me back to DMOZ! Is there something i'm doing wrong here? This is the page we are on in DMOZ And this is the page i believe we should be on in the google directory As a side note, i would love to hear your opinions if this really even matters? does google really use it's own directory as part of its search algorithm?
