Multiple KW's , on-page and anchor text
-
Hello,
For each page on my site, I've targeted one primary keyword and three to four secondary keywords. All of the keywords variants are tightly themed. With some on-page, I've ranked page two or three for all of the keywords and many are starting to convert based on Analytics data.
Each page scores an "A" using the SEOmoz KW targeting tool for the "primary keyword only". For secondary keywords, I've only included words but not the complete keyword. For example, if the primary keyword is "blue green widgets" and the secondary keyword is "get blue green widgets", I've included the word "get" throughout the copy to target the secondary keyword.
My questions are...
- Should I include each secondary keyword once in the copy and not just the word "get" for example? Just wondering if there is a better approach to target all of the keywords via on-page.
- When getting links to each page, how would you vary the anchor text to target all of the keywords, primary and secondary?
Thanks!

Thanks guys. Some great info!

Hey ShaneO,
You say your rankings have increased, and you're getting an 'A' in the seomoz tool. If you've grouped your targetted keywords like you're describing, I'm gonna say you're good to go on that front.
1. On-page SEO tools are awesome, and I'm sure most others around will agree that these are some of the best (why else would we pay for it, yeah?). But it's also important to take a step back and read it without "SEO eyes." If you have your primary keyword in there, and variations could be easily found contextually, and it doesn't read like it was written by a robot; then I think you're good to go.
2. The answer to this could get a bit in-depth but I'll take a stab at it. Once you've begun to analyze your competition and are on the lookout for link opportunities, you'll get an idea for how much you'll be able to control in regard to anchor text (some sites will force only the domain name, some will allow your input).
The first bit of advice is to try an keep it natural looking. I even go so far as to throw a few completely-off-kw-focus anchors if I think I'm getting too many "good" ones.
Other than that, start with your primary keyword (assumed to be the most competitive and the most beneficial) and build those. When I'm building for variations, I don't build for each of the various keywords for which I'm targetting, I literally try to just mix it up as best I can while keeping the KW focus.
So if I'm going after"blue widgets, red widgets" I'll get a bunch for each if I can, then work out some of the like:
- "some widgets in blue"
- "red and blue widgets"
- "red ones" <- so I would try to get a blogger to put this into a semantically relevant sentence
- "the blue types are nice" <- same as above
Remember that the anchor is a big factor, but so is the context of the surrounding text. Getting a link with the best anchor from a completely unrelated article, from an even more unrelated/focused site won't help too much (with a few "super high quality" site exceptions).
On the other hand, if you can get a halfyway decent anchor on an article about "blue widgets" specifically, on a blog written by the foremost expert in "blue widgetry" then you'll reap more benefits.
Like I said, it's a complex subject sometimes...and I ramble. Let me know if any of that didn't make sense.

Howdy Shane,
#1. Here's a great moz post about targeting multiple phrases
I think you should use the variations normally throughout the copy. Of course, you want make sure each are used in some way. What I like to do, is break the secondary target keywords into h2's and paragraphs. So for example...
why you should get blue green widgets sooner rather than later
blah blah blah get blue green widgets blah blah blah blah.....
how to buy blue green widgets for cheap
blah blah blah buy blue green widgets blah blah blah blah.....
#2. Here's a WBF video from Cyrus about using partial match and exact match anchor text. Also, here's a bangup post about varying anchor text distributions with pretty charts and stuff.
Simply put, build links for all of them, but naturally (IE also get some branded terms, domain anchor text, 'website', etc, etc.)
I'd also check out your ranking competitors and determine the anchor text distributions of their pages, to make sure you beat them, but aren't too much of an outlier
Does this help Shane?

Spam sites republish a article with 'money keyword' anchor text and causing a pentalty.. how to prevent.
About 6 weeks ago we had a DA50 / PA50 homepage site publish an article on our company which included a money keyword anchor text to our site.. Great. Once this happened we shot up the SERP for this term, but quite a few other spam / crawler sites seem to automatically republish everything this DA50 site publishes. This didnt seem to be a problem up until a couple of weeks ago, but now with the new penguin update it seems we have been slapped with a penalty, for having 20 sites all with the same article and anchor text. (the rest of our profile is pretty natural, so this is the main culprit for the penalty) Im now going to write to all the webmasters apart from the DA50 site, and ask them to remove the article, failing that ill have to disavow them. For future reference what is there a way of avoiding this issue of spam sites republishing a propper article and triggering a penalty.

Domain and page backlinks
Hello Everyone, I am new at SEO, and I am a bit confused with the following situation: I have domain, wordpress site on it, and I am building backlinks to it (testing). I do not have "home" page among pages in wordpress, if it means anything. When I build links, i use different anchor texts, but they all point to http://somethingsomething.net -Ahrefs shows that I have 830 backlinks from 45 domains, to my URL, which is http://somethingsomething.net (it is also my site's home page address) -MOZ;s Open site explorer, on the other hand, shows the following: 8 internal links and 0 external links for page specific metrics, and 878 total links 0 external for root domain metrics. -Google Webmaster tools shows 10 external links pointing to my site Please can someone explain to me what is happening here? Thanks a lot

What's a reasonable time to start ranking for a niche site?
I launched a niche site to go through the whole process, for fun and profit. Started with keyword research (3-6 word long tail keywords), have done first 3 posts and done minimal amount of link building. Have gotten about a dozen visitors in the first 5 weeks and ranking on page 2. Is this ok or should I be more aggressive with link building (assuming my keyword research is done ok)?

Anchor text diversity - post penguin.
Hi, It seems that achor text diversity is hugely important post penguin but what's the best strategy? What kind of anchor text should I be going for? As I understand it more that 60% of links with the keywords in trigger a google flag. For example are the following good examples for the term 'wedding singer'? local wedding singer, best wedding singer, wedding singer website, hire wedding singer. Would these cause triggers in google as all contain the keyword 'wedding singer'? Or should I be going for: click here, visit us, listen now, view a profile Obviously these words don't contain the anchor text 'wedding singer' but with a few exact match #wedding singer' anchor texts and good on page SEO will this mix give better results?

When is it excessive anchor text usage?
Hrello fellow Mozzers. There's been alot of writing about excessive anchor text usage, and as an SEO I get it. Don't get to crazy about it, but - WHEN is it excessive anchor text usage? Is it excessive if I have 50 links distributed in 10 blogposts?

Is it excessive if I have a 250 links distributed across the entire site? It's fair enough that excessive anchort text usage get's you penalized, but it's freakishly annoying that nobody tells you WHEN you've reach the line that defines "excessive"... Anyone??0 -

Homepage vs specific page Backlink
Hello, I have a local business and have been working on getting backlinks for highly relevant keywords. I have keyword optimized pages (keyword in URL, title, H1, etc) but I have been sending backlinks to the homepage, as these keywords represent the core of what we offer. See example below: car repair car repair london auto repair auto repair london I have been sending backlinks (with the correct anchor text of course) to the homepage, am I better off sending them to the specific pages? One more thing: the SEOMOZ report talks about cannibalisation of keywords, where for example the page optimised for "car repair" links to "Car repair london". I have links to the optimised pages in a footer at the bottom of every single page on the website, is this bad practice? (considering SEOMOZ talks about cannibalisation? Should I do something else instead (or eliminate the footer links altogether?) I would appreciate your expert advice.

Does it pay to change link text internally?
Most of my internal pages have their best links from within our site (of course we are trying to change that). Is it worth the effort to sculpt the link text to show varied text instead of most all showing the same link text? Or is that only important from external links?
