Whatever Happened to Text Link Ads?

I've searched the web for any objective articles, good or bad, written about Text Link Ads or Text Link Brokers written in the past two years. Other than the occasional discussion board question, SEOs are silent about these services.
I know back in 2006, Rand looked upon them almost favorably. But what has happened since then? Is there any legitimate use for these services anymore (as a link builder)?

Like I said, it's difficult to find any recent information about TLA or TLB at all. I hadn't even heard about the link penalty or the sale.
I've skimmed over Scott's experiment and will watch your video in a bit. Honestly, I'm not surprised that the experiment worked.
One of my clients was recently surpassed by a competitor in the SERPs for one of their "bread-and-butter" keywords. The competitor very obviously bought links...and lots of them, too. Especially in a post-Penguin (even post-Panda) environment, I found that a bit disheartening. Though I don't wish bad things on anyone, I'm hoping (and betting) that Google will quickly pick up their "unnatural" links.

The brand of "text links" generally has not been good over the last few years. TLA was penalized by Google for a while, but is now back ranking for their own name. I don't know if TLB was ever hit in the same way, but I know both of them have occasionally sent emails to those who purchased their products noting that Google may have removed link value or even be penalizing them.
When I gave a favorable review to TLA, I specifically called out some of the white hat services, and I also did so prior to Patrick Gavin's sale of the network. Today, I'd be mostly skeptical of the value the "classic" link purchases could provide, though they may indeed have other, less guideline-violating products that are worthwhile.

All, TLA is alive and well! We have added 10 different link products within the last year and a half to help diversify ones efforts. TLA provides many link building solutions beyond what we've offered for the past 11 years. Remember we are not a link network. All of our 150,000+ publishers are independently owned. We just don't like to be as vocal about all of this like some of the other companies out there.

I would not suggest using paid link networks for any reason. Even if you want to purchase links, there are safer ways to do it.

I'd stay clear of the IMO. Quite a few paid networks have been devalued recently and I bet it's causing trouble for companies that have used them.
I believe the issue is that paid link patterns are becoming easier to detect and therefore potentially dangerous for sites that have them in their backlink profile. I'm sure there's still people out there getting good results from them, but I don't think I could handle knowing that rankings could be wiped out every algorithm update!

Best practice to preserve the link juice to internal pages from expired domain?
This question relates to setting up an expired domain, that already has quality links, including deep links to internal pages. Since the new site structure will be different, what's the best practice to preserve the link juice to these internal pages? Export all the internal pages linked to using majestic Seo/ ahrefs etc, and set these pages previously linked to? Or 301 redirect these pages to home page? I heard there's a Wordpress plugin that 301 redirects all the 404 errors successfully preserving all the potential link juice.

How do you check if a website has a link network (From the same C Class)
Hello Mozzers, I'm conducting a link audit and I see a red flag for one of my guest blogs i did in 2012. let's say the IP of the website was 62.658.62.9 Little did I know that the blogging website is a link network with the same content on each IP via it's specific C class: 62.658.62.9 62.658.62.10 62.658.62.11 ETC... How does one find a website to blog on and check to see if they have a blog network or better yet, see if there is a similar distinction of duplicate sites based on its C-class?

Is competitive analysis only for high level links now
Hello, Is finding backlinks through competitive analysis only for high quality links these days. It seems commonly thought that link building is dead. If the site with a link section in my industry has a DA below 35 should I leave it alone? Or what's safe and future (update) proof these days? Thanks!

Do I need to undo a 301 redirect to dissavow links from the source domain?
A client came to me after being hit by Penguin and had already performed a 301 redirect from site A to Site B. Site B was subsequently hit by the penalty a number of weeks later and we are planing on performing link removal for Site A. Only the webmaster tools account for Site B exists, none is still available for site A. I assume that I cannot dissavow links to site A from Site B's webmaster tool account (even though website A's links show up in the GWT account). So do I need to undo the 301 and then create a new GWT account for site A in order to disavow the links pointing to site A, or can I submit from Site B's GWT account since they are 301'd to site B? Hiding content or links in responsive design
Hi, I found a lot of information about responsive design and SEO, mostly theories no real experiment and I'd like to find a clear answer if someone tested that. Google says:

Sites that use responsive web design, i.e. sites that serve all devices on the same set of URLs, with each URL serving the same HTML to all devices and using just CSS to change how the page is rendered on the device

Partner Site Hit with Penguin - Links hurt me
I work for a network of international websites, the site I work on is for Canada. Our partners in Australia were hit by penguin hard because they hired a black hat SEO guy and didn't know. He was creating profiles on highly authoritative sites and keyword stuffing them. Now, they've completely dropped off the SERP. This is where the issue occurs, because we are all international partners we are all linked together on the header of every page so visitors can choose their country. Now, because they were hit hard and we have reciprocal links (not for rankings but for usability) will we be affected? It seems like we have, but I just want some opinions out there. Also, should we go ahead and stop linking our sites between countries to avoid this mess?

What's been your experience with profile link-building?
What have your experiences been? Short Term? Long Term? There isn't a lot written about it, and I'm wondering where it falls in the order of things. I was very hesitant to jump in, but have launched a few campaigns, both for local geo targeting phrases, and national accounts. Surprisingly, I've seen a surge in rankings, but also wonder how short lived they will be. I've noticed the links still don't come up in tools like open site explorer, but I'm able to find them when searching for the unique username I used while building the profiles. The sites I'm listing on have no relevance to industry, unless by chance, although the PR's I'm using are all 4 or higher. Is this considered gray hat?
