Local SEO: Creating a Second home-based business?
-
I'm in a bit of a pickle, here's the issue:
- I have a home-based business with a physical address.
- I plan on starting another home-based business at the same physical address.
- I only have one phone (cellphone).
- I plan on operating both businesses unless one completely eclipses the other.
I can probably see your head spinning right now . . . how big of NAP issues are we looking at?
- I own my house, I could probably add a line to the new business address (like a suite # or something)
- I can afford a landline or secondary cellphone if necessary
Any thoughts, ideas, criticisms, direction, hate-mail, or solutions?
-
Thanks, Moosa

Another reason for having separate phone numbers is to make sure there's no confusion when people search for your phone number.

If you have just one business with different aspects to it and Google likely would see it the same way.
Having two business listings with the same address and phone number would likely result in a merger of the two listings into one. If 2 or more businesses share an address, suite address or phone number (or even if their names are too similar), Google will frequently merge the business details of the listings.Google allows 2 or more businesses at the same address when the categories are clearly different, which you can do if the 2 businesses are of different aspects.
You can get some help here. https://support.google.com/places/answer/107528?hl=en&ref_topic=1656880
I advise to get a new phone number for your second business. This will solve the problem more easily, its cost effective and removes the whole confusion
Hope this helps

Hi Michael,
So glad to have you here in the Q&A Forum. Let's tackle this!
So, the main issue you're facing is the negative outcome of merged listings. A merged listing occurs when Google combines the details of two different businesses, often because they share similarities. For example, a carpet cleaner and a rug store sharing the same building might accidentally end up with the details on their Google+ Local pages getting mixed up. They might end up with crossed up phone numbers, address numbers or reviews.
While Google has become more adept in recent times at not merging listings, it still does happen and that can be a problem. Your best insurance against this would include:
-
Two distinct business types (not in the same industry)
-
Two separate local phone numbers (you've got to have this)
-
A separating address element, like a legal suite number
-
Completely different websites with NO DUPLICATION of content, address or phone number between them.
-
Completely separate sets of citations at third party sites, with no mixed up details
-
Choosing completely different business categories when creating the new Google+ Local page for the new business
If there are similarities or duplications in any of the above, yes, you are at risk for a merge that could potentially harm your original business while holding back the new company's ability to rank well. So, this is something to be entered upon with really good planning and care. Glad you asked and good luck!

Seasonal Setting Options for Google My Business
Hi there, Not sure if anyone will have any insight but I have a seasonal business that I am closed for from September to March. I don't want to mark my business as "permanently closed" through Google My Business as I don't want my customers to think I've gone out of business. I've seen a few times through forums that you can change your business to temporarily closed, but I can't find the specifics on how to do this. Any insight, suggestion or resources would be great! Thanks!

Google My Business pages for New Construction Communities
I have a number of builders of new homes as clients. Typically, they build out a whole neighborhood at once and give the neighborhood a fancy name. We were planning to create Google My Business pages for these communities but then ran into some potential challenges. As new communities, they are sometimes not on Google's radar yet Some of them have model homes where you might take a tour with a realtor that serves the community exclusively but many don't. So here come the questions... Is there a way to make Google speed up its process of recognizing new addresses? I have to choose an address to associate with the GMB page, probably the address of model home. Is this going to create annoying problems for a buyer who someday buys that model home? Since some communities don't have a model home, I could arbitrarily assign an address of one of the neighborhood homes to the GMB page, but this leads to the same question about creating a GMB page that will exist after the builder has sold all the houses in the community. Will it be weird to have the GMB referring to someone's private residence down the road? My assumption is that claiming a GMB page would help with local ranking if someone searches for something like "new homes" in addition to providing easy driving directions to someone who has done a bit of research and Googles the name of the new home community while out driving and searching for homes. These seem to be the main benefits, but are the challenges associated with questions 1-3 even worth the trouble of trying to claim listings for these communities?

How Far is Too Far to Show Up in Local Results
Hi everyone, I have one client that is located about 45 minutes (25 miles) outside of a large city and I can't seem to help them rank within that large city. They're a relatively new business in the service industry (meaning they'll travel to an individual's residence) and in the surrounding cities closer to their physical location, they rank extremely well. In this large city, they have 3 keywords in the top 10, 2 snack pack rankings and then everything else is below 51! I have a feeling that distance depends on many things, but I am wondering if anyone has ever figured out how far away is **too far **to be considered local by Google. My feeling is that sure it would be nice to rank locally for this large city as it would open them up to a really large customer pool, but that maybe 45 minutes away is just not local (I know I personally don't consider that "local"). Again, I understand that ranking locally depends on a really wide range of factors, but I'm considering only distance in this question. Thanks so much!

Multiple locations for business displaying in search
I have two locations for my business but now if I search for the term "car medics" on Google search only one of the locations display now. I'm not exactly sure when this change happened but If you refer to my August screenshot http://puu.sh/lACx7/6329ef916e.png compared to today's screenshot http://puu.sh/lABPS/415fa451c1.png. The search results used to display both locations which is exactly what I wanted. How can I have this corrected? I don't want people to think I only serve at one location. I specifically made two location pages instead of listing both on a single contact page on my website to delineate I have two locations. Yes I understand both locations will come up if I check Google Maps but I want the same thing for on Google search as well.

Higher Value: Google Local Listing or .edu link?
A client of mine is putting together a partnership with a local university to offer a certain type of medical test through several of its clinics. They are writing up the contract now and asked me if there is anything they should ask for that would benefit us in our listings. Since we do not have an actual local footprint, my first inclination was to ask for them to help us get verified as owners of "practitioner" local listings at their business addresses (as discussed here). We would provide local numbers that would ring our call center. My thinking is that these listings and backlinks would benefit on searches similar to "medical testing in San Antonio". I have a number of concerns with this track but would love to hear from the community on why or why not this might be the way to go. Another potential option is to ask for a link from the university's website outlining the partnership. Something along the lines of "Our labs have partnered with BIZNAME to provide medical testing in San Antonio to our valued patients." I'd obviously love the EDU links, but I'm hesitant after Overstock's penalty a few years ago to try to set something like that up. I'm not sure which (if either) to ask for in the contract. I'm leaning toward the latter since it seems more in line with a long term strategy, and Google seems to change their treatment of the local listings pretty frequently. However, getting that high visibility real estate in the local listings is really appealing to me. What does everyone think?

Two businesses - using separate suite numbers
I have a client that has an office in a particular suite (Suite 101) at a local address. They rent the space so they cannot just add another suite number. They are going to have two websites for two different businesses run from the same location. They will have separate local phone numbers for each business. Is it too much of a stretch for them to show one as "Suite 101-A" and the other as "Suite 101-B" for their local pages? One of the businesses is very new with few citations at this point. The other has not started up yet, so we have better control of the citations that will be created. I've seen similar questions posted, but not one that addresses this specific issue. Thanks for any advice!

How to submit a new business in Factual
I am trying to create citation for my client sites in Factual.com. As, I am not a hardcore developer, I wont be able to use the API as mentioned in the Factual website. It also provides a lit of Trusted Data Contributors, which are paid third party service providers. I would like to know, whether it is possible to create a business listing in Factual, by using any other means than these two options.
