How to rank for several keywords
-
Hi there Mozers,
So far I have been building my webshop ouibonjour.com over the course of several weeks while studying the awesome educational content here on Moz and other SEO-related sites. I think I have done an OK job so far, and I have managed to rank #1 on several long tail keywords after a couple of weeks.
Problem is - there are more long tail keywords I want to rank #1 for as well!
**What I have done so far: **
I have taken the strongest keywords that can generate conversion and added them in page titles, title heads, main anvigation titles, in my alt text in images and so forth. The page is not screaming "SEO!" and I am happy with that. Nevertheless, I think the SEO measures here are done in an effective way.
If you bothered to click on my page, you can see that the home page has only 5 posts (posts, not pages).
They redirect visitors to other important parts of my site, and I change the image and/or the title once every 3 weeks to not keep the page too static. In a /magazine subfolder, I have a blog that ranks pretty good for several keywords, but the content here is not directly related to my products, but rather articles that fits the interests of my potential buyers (lifestyle, culture, etc).
**What I need - but not sure how - to do: **
I basically want to rank for way more long tail keywords that relate to my products, but I don't want to continue setting up posts that have these keywords, because the content on the main page will be too heavy on the SEO, and therefore lose value for my visitors. How can I rank for more keywords without having to pepper my site with posts full of these keywords?
I do not want to write articles on my blog that focuses on different combinations of long tail keywords neither, because it will get too spammy and make my visitors not return.
I need help!
I hope I have managed to explain my problem clearly. If there are any Whiteboard Fridays or posts on this subject that I have missed, please link me directly. If not, I would be tremendously happy and appreciative for any tips and tricks

Thank you, I will try that out.

No.
You work on the copy. You write a body/content of at least 1000 words with the right keyword density. With a good structure, with some images and maybe even some outbound links to authoritative sources.
You test the results and you update accordingly.

Thanks Massimilliano!
How can I write on the landing page to optimize for the semantic-similar keywords? Is meta descriptions the way to go in 2015?
-
But why not to group keywords in groups of semantic-similar keywords and then write a specific landing page optimized for those keywords and hunt for backlinks from bloggers/websites through guest posts optimized for the same keywords?
Being careful not to over-optimize anything.

Thanks a lot Ryan. I am currently trying out the free trial of Moz Pro, so I will definitely try this alternative out.

Hi Keri!
The reason for that is that while I rank #1 for "shop minimal streetwear", I don't rank at the top for "best minimal streetwear online". I know that the search intent is good for both, and what I have to offer is of great value for those who uses both terms.
To answer your question - In my case, the "content" is my products, and not my article posts. Those posts are still relevant for those who visit my shop, but it's catered more to the demographic's lifestyle and interests. I don't want to necessarily talk about "shop minimal fashion" or "best minimal streetwear online" all the time
So far I have three products, with three more to be released the coming weeks. The product description in each has the strongest keywordsm but I don't release products in the same pace anyone would post an article, for example. Neither can I squeeze all the 50+ keywords I need in the product description - that would be too spammy.
-
Why do you want to rank for 50+ long tail keywords on your home page? Is your home page the one that's going to try to convert people for each and every one of those keywords?
Wouldn't it be better to want the content that's more in-depth on a subject to rank, instead?

Hi Fernando. EGOLs example still might work for you depending on how many people follow you, still I understand the differences so here's another method you can try: take the keywords you want to rank for and see what websites come up the most often for them. You can use the rank tracking tool here at Moz.com to do so, and with a pro account you could track up to 350. Next, collect the most frequently ranking domains and take a look at their home pages, sites, and stats. That should give you LOTS of ideas as to what you can do (and what DA and PA strength you might need) to rank for your target keywords. Cheers!

Hello Ryan,
I'll post this real quick for you and for others who might possibly help out:
The content I do on the magazine are not news, and overall will not be content that gets posted every day. The content will be longer and deeper on a subject, with original images in them (+ other SEO-related goodies). Frequency: Once a week.
So I don't think EGOL's approach would be fit for me. I was thinking on ranking for more keywords on the more static home page (the one that gets updated once every three weeks and is the home for both the subdomain "shop" and the subfolder /magazine).
With meta keywords being a thing of the past, how else can I rank for 50+ long tail keywords on my home page?
Thanks a lot

EGOL wrote an excellent answer regarding growing content in this Q&A a couple of days ago: http://moz.com/community/q/is-opening-a-news-section-a-good-idea-for-topical-authority-and-freshness. Look at what he did specifically in paragraph 2:
About eight years ago I started making four to eight very short posts per day (five days per week). These were a title, one or two unique sentences and an icon image that indicated their category. It was an attractive page. Subscriptions to my Feedburner feed and daily emails shot up.. to a five digit number after a few years. Hundreds of linking root domains. At least 100 people per day came to my homepage and clicked the link to the news. Between 500 and 1000 people entered the site through the news page every day.
He didn't worry too much about precise long-tail keywords but was consistently creating more links within his given topic network and creating a bit of new content every day. His results were great too. Perhaps your topic isn't as 'news' centric as EGOLs but the fashion world is constantly churning out news in the form of new collections, looks, designs, and conventional news. Pinterest, instagram, and other sites all have huge fashion followings.

Company name ranking
Hi all, I hope somebody can share their thoughts on the below. A web designer launched my client's new website and I have been tasked with the SEO. I was approached with an immediate problem, www.clientswebsite.co.uk was ranking 9th for their company name after being indexed by Google. The search results above www.clientswebsite.co.uk were related to my client but not all, for example a direct competitor was also ranking. I have been working on the SEO for 2-3 weeks and I just managed to get to 3rd position for the company name, and then www.clientswebsite.co.uk disappeared from page 1! And now instead, an irelevant sub page is now ranking for the company name on page 2 (a contact page). I have checked and the home page is still indexed (did a site: check). The only problem software picks up is a redirect chain (http://homepage -> http://www.homepage -> https://homepage) the web developers said it wouldn't impact rankings (when I asked them to edit the htaccess file to fix it) I've listed below the SEO tasks I completed whilst attempting to rank the company name: I set up analytics and webmaster tools, in which I set up preferred domain (www) Added a sitemap Edited meta data making sure company name was included I contacted the websites above www.clientswebsite.co.uk that were relevant and asked them to place a link linking to their new website, I was successful with a couple of these. I placed www.clientswebsite.co.uk on all of their social media profiles I reformatted headers on their home page, making sure the H1 included my client's company name I found 2 extra versions of my client's home page (not exact copies, but very similar content) that had been published, so I decided to 301 redirect these to the correct home page Activated SSL and forced to HTTPS I would really appreciate it if anyone could share their thoughts here, whether it be explanations or possible solutions Adam

Subdomain Ranking Question
Hi All - Quick question that I think I know the answer to, but I feel like I've been going around in circles a bit. My client is launching a new product and wants us to build a microsite for it (product.clientname.com). My client really dislikes their brand website, and wants to use paid media to push their audience to this new microsite. However, they also said want it to rank well organically. I feel uneasy about this, because of the subdomain vs. subfolder argument. I believe that the product will also be listed/featured on their main brand website. What is the best way forward? Thanks!

Sudden drop in rankings over 7 days
Hello fellow SEOs, I am having a few issues with one of the sites I manage. The site in question has dropped for a number of terms in the last 7 days, including: logo design - dropped 2 places, now 19th logo design uk - dropped 2 places, now 8th logo designer - dropped 3 places, now 20th bespoke logo design - dropped 3 places, now 10th I'm worry that the site might drop for more terms if I just leave it alone. I haven't made any changes to the site but I have noticed that our number of inbound links has increased by 58% in the last 7 days. I have put the site through OSE and used the spam analysis tool. There's only one domain linking to my client that has an orange spam flag but this link isn't newly acquired. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How to tell when a directory backlink or other backlink is worthy of disavow tool? Especially when a keyword is not ranking passed where it should.
Hello, I jumped aboard as SEO for a client, who seems to of had been hit by panda and penguin back in 2012 of April, the panda part I feel I've fixed by creating better content, combining pages that were same topic into one, basically creating a better content experience that relates better to search terms users are searching for. Once the site was redesigned and relaunched all keywords improved minus one, the main keyword they want to rank for. Created a landing page for it, that is very nicely optimized for that keyword and it's brothers and sisters, however that page isn't used by google since it's brand new with a PA of 1. Doing a backlink audit I found 102 links out of 400 using the same anchor text as the keyword they want ranked for, they also have synonyms anchor text for other links too but not quite as much. Most of those 102 domains using the main keyword anchor text are directories, in my opinion I'd declare all of them spam, however there are a few with DAs higher than 50, making me little more nervous to disavow, since I want to make sure we get out of the penalty if we were hit by penguin but also don't want to ruin the ranking for other keywords we're doing better with, since they are longtails and short, but very relevant to users. How is the best way to determine if a site / directory is spammy enough that it's penalizing you and how could I approach the anchor text issue with backlinks? 99% of these links I cannot have changed, since they're directories I doubt many have had a human mess with them in a while. Sidenote* If you're going to post a link as a response, try to summarize what that link will be about, as many times links are giving as an answer but end up not really providing the meat we were seeking. Thank you!

Should you use the keyword for your page in an image?
Hi there! I am currently working on building up the SEO ranking on a page using a specific keyword - dresses. Within this page, we have an online image library full of dresses which are then added to multiple pages determined by brand, colour, type etc for people to search. I am adding hundreds of images all of dresses - I wanted to know if I name these images using the keyword: for example 'dresses_1, 'dresses_2' - will that have a knock on effect on page I am trying to build up and optimise for the keyword 'dresses'??? Any help is appreciated.

Website not ranking for noncompetitive terms
Hi, We've took over a website last July and no matter what we do we just can't get it ranking in Google, even for noncompetitive terms. here is the website in question: http://www.alignandsmile.co.uk Ideally the client would like to rank for Canary Wharf but that location is competitive, the site doesn't even rank for 'Dentist New Providence Wharf E14' despite it being included in the title tag on the home page and in the content throughout the website. Directories with Align and Smile's business information do rank however. I opened a case with google through Webmaster tools and they 'reviewed your site and found no manual actions by the webspam team that might affect your site's ranking in Google.' So I'm a bit stuck. The site ranks top for the keyphrase in Bing and Yahoo...we are really struggling with Google! Any help would be much appreciated. many thanks Marcus

Keyword density question.
For instance, if the keyword I'm targeting on a specific page is "New Orleans", the Keyword is everywhere it's supposed to be, title, meta, content, internal links, etc, .... So when I check my most relative key words with different tools, it always breaks the word up like: new - 12 times 2.3% orleans - 12 times 2.3% Should I try to fix this? or is this normal? and does google view this as 1 keyword when evaluating my site?
