Should I stop redirectin 301, sometime?
-
Dear All,
I work for a southamerican ecommerce, I would like to know if you can help me out with the following.
This site is full of 404, more than 45K, so we are doing 301 to corresponding pages. The development team is asking me if we could stop doing the 301 in some time...In order to do this search engines should index only the url we are redirecting to, and not the one that is redirecting to the new one.
Currently they are redirecting in the HTML no by htaccess, so this means they have one page for each URL that needs to be redirected, and this is not efficient.
Bests,
Pablo

I would just setup wild card 301 redirects via htaccess. Allows you to establish rules to redirect whole directories to new pages: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6877486/how-can-i-use-htaccess-to-redirect-paths-with-a-wildcard-character

Meta noindex + the URL Removal Tool would work to get rid of them. I would also try and make sure any old links internally on your site that may point to these pages get removed, if that is the step you are going to take. What will the user see when they land on these old URLs?

Hi Jazom,
Errors are hard 404. I like what you say, but I would like to know if it would be better to erase indexed pages from index.

Hi Russ,
Tnks, I like this kind of segmentation by inbound links and traffic, let me quote you
"Chances are, most of those pages neither receive traffic nor have inbound links. Go ahead and drop the 301 redirect for all of those" I think you mean (Im Argentine) I should use redirect for these URLs. which I dont think it make much sense since these are not the most valuable pages. I got your general idea, but let me know if you made I mistake when you wrote it.
I like what you said in general, but I wouldn´t like leaving 404 (even though they got no traffic or links) with out treating. So...questions...Meta no-index, does it work for already indexed pages? What do you think about using no-index + deleting these urls from index using webmaster tools.

Hi Pablo,
What report are you using to find the 404 pages? Are they soft 404 or hard 404s? A lot of reports may return a 404 response for something like a failed file request which does not really impact usability.
If you have a consistent page name for your 404 pages, look under Analytics site content and filter by page title then search for your 404 page title - this will give you the actual failed page requests, you can then narrow down if they are internal page links or external.
It may be worthwhile checking what links are pointing to your 301 redirects and if there are links you want to keep, dropping them could have a negative impact on your site.
Regards,
Jason

This is a good and common question. There are two reasons why you would want to keep the 301 redirect in place
- Usability: Users are still trying to reach this now defunct page
- Inbound Links: There are external links that are pointing to this page.
The best thing to do is first narrow down the pages for which you have no reason to keep 301s in place. Open up your analytics platform and look to see which of those 45K pages have received no traffic in the last 30 days. Then use a tool like Open Site Explorer or Google Search Console to see if any of those 45K pages have inbound links. Chances are, most of those pages neither receive traffic nor have inbound links. Go ahead and drop the 301 redirect for all of those.
Then, prioritize the remaining pages. The ones with the most links and most traffic should probably retain a 301 redirect for the long run. Those near the bottom you might choose to drop.
Finally, with that many 404s, make sure that your 404 page is useful. Create a custom 404 page that helps direct users to their correct location or provides an easy search mechanism to find it themselves.

Too many 301 Redirects caused lower rankings :(
1. Ok so I code my eCommerce site myself first 2. Then switched to Shopify and re-direct all my URLs (terrible mistake) 3. Then Shopify didn't do in terms of seo, so I switched to BigCommerce and re-direct all my URLs (Yes I know but at least this platform is much better) I started getting 404 errors as you can imagine in webmaster tools after switching from Shopify and there were 504 of them. Why its too many because I realized that Shopfiy just creates so many urls for the same pages. One by one I re-direct them to their new destinations. As you can imagine my rankings dropped. As my site speed is now 5.5s at gmetrix. mobile 47 - desktop 80 on Google Site speed tool. Looking at the links now, some of the 404's does not make sense to redirect. How should I approach this? Should I remove some of them if they were not used on web anywhere, no sites linking to that page and let them die in time? OR Should I keep them all? I am giving some examples below, there are so many for each. Handling Multiple Domain 301 Redirects on Single htaccess file
Hello, I have a client that currently that has 9 different markets with different sub-domains on one server (aka one htaccess file.). All the sites have very similar Navigation and some of them contain the same products aka same URLs. The site is using Magento CMS and I'm trying to figure out how to redirect some products that have been removed from one of the stores. The problem I'm running into is when I try to redirect one store url, it redirects all the site's URLs. Example http://store.domain1.com/ http://store.domain2.com/ I'd like to redirect http://store.domain1.com/old-url.html to http://store.domain1.com/new-url.html without making http://store.domain2.com/old-url.html redirect. I've literally been pulling out my hair trying to figure this one out but have had no luck. Does anybody have any ideas on how I could do this without having the sites redirect or create any loops? Any wisdom from you apache experts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Erik

Pages that 301 redirect to a 404
We are going through a website redesign that involves changing URL's for the pages on our site. Currently all our pages are in the format domain.com/example.html and we are moving to stip off the .html file extension so it would just be domain.com/example We have thousands of pages as the site deals with news so building a redirect for each individual page isn't really feasible. My plan is to have a generic rewrite rule that redirects any page that ends .html to the stripped off version of this. A problem I can see with this is that it will also redirect pages that don't exist. So for example, domain.com/non-existant-page.html would 301 to domain.com/non-existant-page which would then return a 404 status. What would the SEO repercussions be for this? Obviously if a page doesn't exist already then it shouldn't show up in the search engine indexes and shouldn't be a problem but I'm a bit worried about how old pages that currently legitimately 404 will be treated when they start to 301 redirect to a 404 instead. Not sure if there any other potential issues from this that I've missed either? Thanks!

Permanently using 301 for internal link
Hello Folks, Tried going through the 301 answers but could not find any question similar to what I had. The issue we have is we have got a listing page with the products like this: /used-peugeot/used-toyota-corolla As you can see this URL is not really ideal and I want to redirect it to /used-toyota/corolla using mod_rewrite. The redirect will be 301. My concern here is the URL in the listing page won't change to /used-toyota/corolla and hence the 301 will be 'permanently' placed and I was wondering if this will lose some link juice of the 301ed URL. Now with 301 being a 'permanent' redirect one would assume it should not be an issue but I just wanted to be sure that I am correct in assuming so. Thank you for your time.

Should you ever reverse a 301
Hi Im Looking at reversing a 301 i did 5 months ago, I originally changed names of a site for reasons where the site was going to be split into 2 where part of the site i would run and the other where i would get my business partner to run it However since the 301 i have lost 80% of traffic and cannot find the reason as to what especially as everything looks perfect except the rankings, to put it into context 150 keywords i was tracking all were page 5 and below with 40% being page 1 Now only 7 from that same 150 are in the top 10 pages (First 100 results), The issue i have must be very rare as i have posted for help with little or no response, which tells me that the kind people who have looked could not see any issues as this is normally a very helpful community (below is the last thread i asked for help) http://www.seomoz.org/q/301-redirect-how-to-get-those-juices-flowing So 5 months on i am considering removing the 301 and hoping that some kind of normality returns by reinstating the old URL So my question is that is what im about to do wise, do i have any options, is this something you have done in the past if so how did you get on Thanks in advance

Choose of destination for a 301 redirection
Hi, I had a website paris-football.com which ranked quite well on specific request as 'paris football" and "paris foot". I decided 2 months ago to stop this website as I had no time to update it and it was quite rubish in terms of content and make a redirection to a better quality website. I decided to redirect to the deep url http://www.sportytrader.com/paris-foot.php . The destination Url has not beneft from the redirection and has even seen its rankings drop since the redirection. do you think that it would have been better to redirect to the Home Page http://www.sportytrader.com ? Do you think that I can still change the destination url ? Thanks a lot for your help,

301 or 302 - www.yoursite.com/uk/content
If your website CMS forces you to redirect from the homepage should it be a 301 or 302 Example includes www.direct.gov.uk which 302's it My view is that it should be a 302 in this instance and almost all others should be a 301 - the reason for this is that you want the www.direct.gov.uk to be the "primary" and one that is displayed in Google, whereas for anything else you want the URL of the location. Yes I know that ideally you don't have any redirection at all...

301 Redirect for 2500 pages
Hi, We have an existing site done in DNN and we recreated it on a new platform (EPiServer) and now we're going live. However, there are 2500+ page URLs from the old site which is not exisitng on the new site. What do you reckon is the best way we can address this? Do we create a 301 redirect individually for each of these pages? These 2500+ pages have a domain authority 34-35 and I think it's best that we retain those. We'll be using the same domain name. Suggestions for ways to approach this issue would be greatly appreciated. I have access to the server and IIS. *Also, how do I create a virtual page in IIS? and redirect it to another URL within the site? Thanks.
