Keyword Phrase in URL structure
-
Wondered the best URL structure, to include a major keyword phrase. Our clients' case is that their domain name is not the main keyword. So should we include the keyword phrase in the URL structure to list all their office locations:
A - www.website.com/anxiety-treatment/denver/1001
or
B - www.website.com/denver/1001Would this be considered keyword stuffing? We'd like "A" above to rank for keyword phrases related to "anxiety treatment denver", etc.

Hi Rebecca -
Thanks for the fast reply! In my example, how would you structure the "find a business" URL's vs. the "specific business location page" URL:
website.com/anxiety-treatment/co/denver
- to browse a directory
- to allow users to work backwards to find a location in another city
website.com/johnson-anxiety-treatment-center-denver-co
- as the link to the one specific office in denver named "Johnson Anxiety Treatment Center"?
Do you feel that the specific office page needs to be in the same URL structure as the browse a directory? If so then it would be super long like this:
website.com/anxiety-treatment/co/denver/johnson1001Appreciate your thoughts & reply.

Hi Bernie,
Having just completed a silo-structure site for a client which featured exactly this problem, I can tell you that this is not going to help with rankings unless you are featuring multiple locations with similar keywords/services.
In our case, the client (a physiotherapy clinic) has 3 separate locations which all provide the same services. In this case, we instituted a keyword phrase for local SEO into the URL structure. Example:
www.brand.com/city1/city1-physiotherapy
www.brand.com/city2/city2-physiotherapy
www.brand.com/city3/city3-physiotherapyThis gives it a bit of extra relevancy for the keyphrase "city1 physiotherapy" or "physiotherapy city1", but that is where the URL structure-keyword benefits end. We did it because the client wanted to specifically target a single keyword phrase at the cost of targeting other phrases. If you are okay with that result, then this works great. In your case, the result could be a domain that reads:
www.website.com/denver-anxiety-treatment/1001
or, if you have multiple locations:
www.website.com/denver/anxiety-treatment/1001
www.website.com/boulder/anxiety-treatment/1001I should point out that these are relatively minor ranking factors, and that you are probably better off focusing on major issues like your link profile, content marketing and website health rather than the URL structure. This is becoming less and less important to search engines and the benefits you gain from them generally aren't worth the time you invest.
Anyways, hope this helps and feel free to get in touch if you need help or clarifcation.
All the best,
Rob

It wouldn't be considered keyword stuffing, but the benefit of adding the keyword may be lost by the fact that you've made your URL longer and buried the pages another level down in the subdirectory structure. It's a nice bit of readability, but my guess is it's not going to have much impact on ranking.
For me, the relative neutrality of it and the low risk means that I'd consider user experience the deciding factor. Google will display the URL in any SERPs you rank in, and having the keyword visible there is probably a good thing for the searcher.

Changing Urls
Hi All, I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I ran a scan on a website and it has a stack of urls that are far too long. I am going through and changing the urls to shorter ones. But my question is regarding redirections. Wordpress seems to be automatically redirecting the old urls to the new ones, should i be adding a more solid 301 in as well or is the wordpress redirect enough? I ask as they dont all seem to stay redirecting Thanks in advance for the help

URL Structure for "Find A Professional" Page
I've read all the URL structure posts out there, but I'm really undecided and would love a second opinion. Currently, this is how the developer has our professionals directory working: 1. You search by inputting your Zip Code and selecting a category (such as Pool Companies) and we return all professionals within a X-mile radius of that ZIP. This is how the URL's are structured... 1. Main Page: /our-professionals 2. The URL looks like this after a search for "Deck Builders" in ZIP 19033: /our-professionals?zipcode=19033&HidSuppliers=&HiddenSpaces=&HidServices=&HidServices_all=[16]%2C&HidMetroareas=&srchbox= 3. When I click one of the businesses, URL looks like this: viewprofile.php?id=409 I know how to go about doing this, but I'm undecided on the best structure for the URL's. Maybe for results pages do this: find-professionals/deck-builders/philadelphia-pa-19033 And for individual pro's profiles do this: /deck-builders/philadelphia-pa-19033/Billys-Deck-Service Any input on how to best structure this so that we can have a good chance of showing in SERPs for "Deck Builders near New Jersey" and the such, would be much appreciated.

I have altered a url as it was too long. Do I need to do a 301 redirect for the old url?
Crawl diagnostics has shown a url that is too long on one of our sites. I have altered it to make it shorter. Do I now need to do a 301 redirect from the old url? I have altered a url previously and the old url now goes to the home page - can't understand why. Anyone know what is best practice here? Thanks

Single Keyword Penalty?
Hi guys, I recently taken over SEO for strikebowling.com.au and I'm stumped to what has happened with the keyword 'Bowling' for the home page. Historically they have been ranking 5-6 for the year and they do come up in the local results. Start of September, bang they drop out of the top 100 for Bowling. No other words seem to be effected. However the keyword 'Bowling Alley' did improve around the same time for an internal page. What could have happened? A single keyword penalty? No messages in Webmaster tools No dodgy link building Look forward to some theories. Regards, Corey

Query strings in Canoncials URLs
Video on my site all resides at www.mydomain.com/video in a player that does not assign unique URLs for each video. We may be able to rewrite the URLs to include a unique identifier found in the video's metadata (www.mydomain.com/video/?bctid=17769780). If I did this, how would it impact the canonical URL? Do the SEs accept canonicals with query strings? What if I only changed the canonical URL and did not change the video's URL? Would that be a problem?

Overly Dynamic URLs
I have a site that I use to time fitness events and I like to post the results using query strings. I create a link to each event's results/gallery/etc. I don't need these pages crawled and I don't want them to hurt my seo. Can I put a "do not crawl" meta on them or will that hurt my overall positioning? What are my other options?

URL paths and keywords
I'm recommending some on-page optimization for a home builder building in several new home communities. The site has been through some changes in the past few months and we're almost starting over. The current URL structure is http://homebuilder.com/oakwood/features where homebuilder = builder name Oakwood Estates= name of community features = one of several sub-paths including site plan, elevations, floor plans, etc. The most attainable keyword phrases include the word 'home' and 'townname' I want to change the URL path to: http://homebuilder.com/oakwood-estates-townname-homes/features Is there any problem with doing this? It just seems to make a lot of sense. Any input would be appreciated.
