How to show a 'We are now...' message for a rebrand and do a 301 redirect?
-
Our developer wants to use javascript, document referral or adding a URL parameter, in order to show a modal window telling them 'We are now...'. A cookie seems to be too much work. All of which don't play nice with the search engines.
Do you know of a technique or method that allows us to be SEO friendly and still give a good user experience? Thanks.

Thanks Charles. We'll try that.

One way to do it would be to redirect using a hash tag # as part of the redirect, now, these are not seen as a seperate page in the way a querystring might be, but a server won't usually pick up that it has the hash tag, they are client side only.
However you could use a bit of jQuery that looks for a hash value on pageload, and if it identifies one, spawns a modal saying "welcome to abc.com, we used to be zyx.com", I have used a plugin called jQuery BBQ for this: http://benalman.com/projects/jquery-bbq-plugin/
So for example, if using PHP you could using the following to redirect:
header("Location: http://www.example.com/#newdomain=1");
Then in your new site test for newdomain in jQuery BBQ using:
jQuery.bbq.getState("newdomain");
and if found spawn a modal.

Right. The message would be on the final page.
It would look something like this:
crawler/human visits domain A --> 301 redirect --> domain B (message)
Human sees message. Hurray!
The problem is creating a 301 redirect and being able to show the message.

Could you just handle this on the end state page - i.e. where the redirect points?
Welcome to example.com, formerly example2.com - etc.

Redirect 301 & Wild Cards
Afternoon All! Question, I am having trouble getting my head around redirects and I am wondering if someone could help me on this.... We recently changed our website and although were using the same database, were using a different URL structure. So for example... Old URL siteurl.com/products/product/moredetails/merlin.id1553.html

New URL siteurl.com//vertigo/dl/product.php?p=1553 As you can see the product has the same ID number, just in a different directory. What I'd like to happen is.... If you go too siteurl.com////.idXXXX.html then you are 301'd too siteurl.com//vertigo/do/product.php?p=XXXX Obviously XXXX is the ID number of the product in our database. Any thoughts? I need help! Thanks in advance.0 -
Updating inbound links vs. 301 redirecting the page they link to
Hi everyone, I'm preparing myself for a website redesign and finding conflicting information about inbound links and 301 redirects. If I have a URL (we'll say website.com/website) that is linked to by outside sources, should I get those outside sources to update their links when I change the URL to website.com/webpage? Or is it just as effective from a link juice perspective to simply 301 redirect the old page to the new page? Are there any other implications to this choice that I may want to consider? Thanks!

Redirect a 301 Redirect
Does any link juice get passed from a permanent redirect to a new 301 redirect? If so, are there any studies which indicate an estimated percentage?

Moving Blog and 301 Redirect Advice
Hello Moz Community, We recently moved our blog from its own domain to a directory on our website. We do not plan on moving over all the old blog posts because a majority most of them are based on events or time-sensitive information that has passed. We need advice on what to do with all of the old blog URL's? Should we just 301 all of them to the new blog directory on our website (www.domain.com/blog)? Should we take the time to move over all the old blog content and put the appropriate 301's in place? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

301 redirect and search engines
How long until 301 redirects get recognized by search engines? I noticed my link on Google isn't forwarding over to my new domain even after the 301 redirect. If I go to the site directly, the 301 redirect works. Anyone know how long it takes for search engines to pick it up? Thanks!

301 redirect not working
Hi there! I have recently moved a domain that has been indexed by google and setup redirects so that it forwards to the new domain. It seems like the only redirect that actually is working is the canonical and main domain but every other page and or page nested within a folder are not working. Here is an example of some of the redirects. Am I doing this wrong? It seems to be going to the new domain but can't find the actual pages.... RewriteEngine On

Where to put 301 redirects in Magento?
I will be changing the URL structure in a magento store from "base/category/subcategory/product" to "base/product" which means i have to make over 1000 URL 301 redirects so our old links still work. Should i put the redirects in a .htaccess file so they stay intact no matter what or should i just put them in with all the other rewrites (in Magento 's URL rewrite manager)? Thanks

301 Redirect
Hi there, We are re-branding & re-structuring our website, there will be quite a number of 301 re-directs, possibly hundreds. The question is: Should i wait until the re-branding has been completed and do al the 301's in one go?, or should I try and do 301's as i go along? Kind Regards
