What CMS system is best?
-
Hi Guys,
I am in the process of developing some new areas of work and a good CMS is going to be required to make my SEO and everything included work to its best.
What CMS systems are the best ones to use from an SEO prospective and generally all round?
Thanks

We've been running wordpress with the all-in-one-seo plugin up until now, but since looking at the Yoast plugin suggested here I've switched. Great suggestion.

My vote goes to WordPress. We're using it for our own website and it's awesome. The best thing about it is a wide support network and numerous SEO plugins which will make your job much easier than any other CMS platform.

Wordpress is very easy to get up and running, and can be very easily optimised, but if you want things to be "just so" it can be complicated getting it just how you want it. That said the volume of themes and plugins available make life very easy if you are willing to compromise. Just remember to keep it updated.
I am about to start playing with MODx which is really the other end of the spectrum, very customisable but with limited support compared to other CMS's. It looks clean and easy to optimise, but it lacks a lot of the bells and whistles that you can take for granted in other CMS's, simply because it's not as mature. They can probably be designed in, but you'll have to do the groundwork.
It really depends on what you're after.

As Alfredo wrote, one basic factor about GPL CMS systems is how big and active is the community grown around each one of them.
In this sense Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal are the ones I would consider.
Then, about how much SEO friendly they are, the first thing you have to know is that all of them have basic SEO features, but that for all them you have to implement new plugins, modules or components.
For instance, for Wordpress I would suggest the SEO plugin by Yoast, SEO Friendly Image and social sharing button (for instance Active Share by OrangeSoda)
Remember that Wordpress is a blogging system, even though it is possible to create more classic web sites with it too.
Joomla is interesting especially because of its community and the tons of devs that almost daily produce new plugins, modules and components for it. It is not so hard to learn too.
Its default SEO features are good, but it is better to install specific components that add more SEO functionality. The most popular are sh404SEF and JoomSEF, but I invite you to explore here to find other software you may need.
Drupal. Of the three is the hardest to learn, but many SEOs consider it best one. Regarding it I warmly suggest you to read this post on Search Engine Journal

Suggestions of some video CMS platforms?
Hi SEOmoz Community! Looking for some suggestions on video sharing CMS platforms. I haven't messed around with video sharing for a few years now and seems like a lot of the previous ones I know about are pretty much dead like PHPmotion. If anyone has any good experiences whether paid or free open source platforms, I'd like to hear what are some good options? TIA!

Best method to stop crawler access to extra Nav Menu
Our shop site has a 3 tier drop down mega-menu so it's easy to find your way to anything from anywhere. It contains about 150 links and probably 300 words of text. We also have a more context-driven single layer of sub-category navigation as well as breadcrumbs on our category pages. You can get to every product and category page without using the drop down mega-menu. Although the mega-menu is a helpful tool for customers, it means that every single page in our shop has an extra 150 links on it that go to stuff that isn't necessarily related or relevant to the page content. This means that when viewed from the context of a crawler, rather than a nice tree like crawling structure, we've got more of an unstructured mesh where everything is linked to everything else. I'd like to hide the mega-menu links from being picked up by a crawler, but what's the best way to do this? I can add a nofollow to all mega-menu links, but are the links still registered as page content even if they're not followed? It's a lot of text if nothing else. Another possibility we're considering is to set the mega-menu to only populate with links when it's main button is hovered over. So it's not part of the initial page load content at all. Or we could use a crude yet effective system we have used for some other menus we have of base encoding the content inline so it's not readable by a spider. What would you do and why? Thanks, James

Best E-commerce Solution - SEO Friendly
I need to know thoughts on the best ecommerce solution for our company. We currently have one website with our products, that people call and they purchase over the phone. In the future we are considering adding a different product line, to which we want to be a fully functional online ecommerce site. We eventually are considering having only a portion of our products on our current site to have the ability to purchase online. The reasoning is because we sell very high quality products that range from $1000 - $200,000. We would like to have a consumer section and an industrial sectioin. The consumer section would consist of products from $1000 - $10,000 or so. Then the industrial products you would need to call to purchase. So would it make sense to have a main website that is our corporate site with links to different websites? Or to keep this all in one website and have different directories like so: corporatecompany.com - links to product-line.com corporatecompany.com - links to product-line-two.com or corporatecompany.com/consumer-grade/ corporatecompany.com/industrial-grade/ corporatecompany.com/the-ecommerce-only-section/ Can a shopping cart be used to turn on half of the products for purchasing online, and the other half to be call in only ? What is the best e-commerce solution that is SEO friendly and also can just play a role of a regular website?
