What is the best top menu linking structure (for SEO) for my site: A or B?
-
I don't know if these two scenarios are any different as far as SEO is concerned, but I wanted to ask to get an opinion.
On my website: http://www.rainchainsdirect.com you can see there is a top menu with "About" "Info" "Questions" etc. Some of these links lead to further pages that are essentially a indeces for multiple further links.
My question is: in terms of SEO, is it better to A) have all links (that are now on the pages that the menu links lead to) displayed in a drop down menu directly from the top menu (and bypassing an intermediate page) or B) to have it as it is now where you have to click to an intermediate page (like "rain chain info") to get access to the links (and not have such a large drop down menu)
Is there a difference in terms of SEO? In terms of useability it almost seems like a toss up between the two, so if there were better SEO value to one of the other, then I would choose that one.
By the way, I know that the way it is structured now is strange, where there is only one drop down that leads to the same page as the top menu item, but that will be fixed, fyi.
Thanks!

Hmm, can't replicate it and just ran your site through Xenu to crawl it and it would appear it was just me navigating using the address bar.
I doubt many people will be doing that, though I often change through sections on ecommerce sites directly.
However it does show up things like http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/collections/all-products/products/large-copper-pails-rain-chain and http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/collections/styled-cup-designs/products/large-copper-pails-rain-chain
So rel=canonical or maybe a redirect on the product pages wouldn't hurt

I think I might be adding a bunch more links on some of those pages, but perhaps I'll make most of them link directly from the top menu and then some of those links will link to pages with more links (like an article index). Cool, thanks.
One questions though (and thanks for bringing it to my attention): how did you get to this same page with two links?
and
http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/products/copper-blossoms-rain-chain-patina
I can only get to that page through the first url above. Where is the link that leads to the page with the second url?
-
If you had all pages linked from the home page, and all pages linking back to the home page but no other pages, this would rank your home page the highest, but it may not be the best for your users.
-
Are you likely to get a lot more pages/products?
If not having everything accessible via drop downs would be my preference, not least of all as a user because if you make me click to a page to get to another page I'm not going to be sticking around long and search engines do want you to think about the users.
This is replicated in search engines by pages you have to click twice to get to being further down the link juice chain even if it's the next subfolder down in terms of URLs.
Actually looking at it, is is possible to get to the pages using different routes? http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/products/copper-blossoms-rain-chain-patina and http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/collections/floral-designs/products/copper-blossoms-rain-chain-patina would appear to be the same.
There's no canonical tag so actually I'd have a think about my site structure in general (appreciate it can be hard with ecommerce sites). Here's an interesting YouMOZ post - http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/the-effect-of-site-structure-on-organic-traffic-add-categories-ampamp-products.
Also, from a conversion point of view I may make a link to my top level categories of products accessible from all pages.

My site links in Bing search results are pulling through the footer text instead of the meta description (see image). Is there any way of controlling this? 2L2VusT

Is this Link Black Hat SEO Cloaking or is it OK?
I am a relatively new SEO professional, Can someone please look at this link and tell me if this is white or black hat SEO cloaking practices? http://loghomeconstructionpro.com/ It has an overlay landing page over a html page. I had a partner promote this to me as a proprietary software when really it just looks like cloaking. I want to do my business above board and this doesn't feel right. However, I would like some opinion on it before i pull the plus on my partner. Thanks all for the advice and the help. GD

Test site got indexed in Google - What's the best way of getting the pages removed from the SERP's?
Hi Mozzers, I'd like your feedback on the following: the test/development domain where our sitebuilder works on got indexed, despite all warnings and advice. The content on these pages is in active use by our new site. Thus to prevent duplicate content penalties we have put a noindex in our robots.txt. However off course the pages are currently visible in the SERP's. What's the best way of dealing with this? I did not find related questions although I think this is a mistake that is often made. Perhaps the answer will also be relevant for others beside me. Thank you in advance, greetings, Folko

A/B testing entire website VS Seo issues
I'm familar with A/B testing variations of a page but I'd like to A/B test a new designs version of a e-commerce site. I´m wondering about the best way to test with SEO concerns... this is what I´ve in mind right now, any suggestion? Use parameters to make version B different from A version. Redirect 50% of the users with 302 ( or javascript would be a better way?) Use noindex in the B pages. Use rel=canonical in the B pages pointing to A version. In the end use 301 redirect to all B pages to A urls. PS: We can´t use subdomain and i don´t wanna use robots.txt file to protect the new design from competitors. I´d love any suggestions and tips about it - thanks folks 🙂

Link Structure & Duplicate Content
I am struggling with how I should handle the link structure on my site. Right now most of my pages are like this: Home -> Department -> Service Groups -> Content Page For Example: Home -> IT Solutions -> IT Support & Managed Services -> IT Support Home -> IT Solutions -> IT Support & Managed Services -> Managed Services Home -> IT Solutions -> IT Support & Managed Services -> Help Desk Services Home -> IT Solutions -> Virtualization & Data Center Solutions -> Virtualization Home -> IT Solutions -> Virtualization & Data Center Solutions -> Data Center Solutions This structure lines up with our business and makes logical sense but I am not sure how to handle the department and service group pages. Right now you can click them and it just brings you to a page with a small snippet for the links below. The real content is on the content pages. What I am worried about is that the snippets on those pages are just a paragraph or two of the content that's on the content page. Will this hurt me and get considered duplicate content? What is the best practice for dealing with this? Those department/service group pages have some good content on them but it's just parts of other pages. Am I okay doing this because there are not direct duplicates of other pages just parts of a few pages? Any help on this would be great. Thanks in advance.

Site Navigation leads to "Too Many On-Page Links" warning
I run an ecommerce site with close to 2000 products. Nearly every page in the catalog has a too many on-page links error because of the navigation sidebar, which has several flyout layers of nested links. What can/should I do about this? Will it affect my rankings at all? Thanks
