How does it take after getting links discovered by google to see increase in rankings?
-
Five of my friends linked to my site from their website and updated their sites through Google Webmaster tools right after linking to my site. Though the Google spider crawled the site as soon as they updated their pages, it still took about three weeks for my site to get a bump in the serps from their links. Why does it take that long for links to kick in and what is the average time it normally takes to see an increase in ranking from links once Google discovers them?
Thanks mozzers!
Ron

I think you have to consider the scale of the enterprise; it's easy to think of Google as being some kind of video game that responds to your input as soon as you make it (note to self: make Video Game about SEO. Possible titles: Link Awakening, The Adventure of Link, A Link to the Past). Also consider the number of links you're talking about; I'm surprised you saw any movement for just five links.
To me, Google's response (including time it takes them to notice) to a link is kind of ineffable. Charles' advice is pretty good. If you're solely concentrating on number of links and what affect they'll have you might be doing the wrong kind of SEO.

In my experience it has taken about 2-4 weeks to see noticeable results after winning a good number of high quality links. It really varies depending on your niche and competition. Wil Reynolds from Seer Interactive talks about a client who received links from highly authoritative sites but saw no improvement in rankings. Other times you will see a site with a bunch of spammy links skyrocket to the first position. My approach is to just create the best content on the web so you deserve to outrank your competitors and your chances of improving rankings in the long run will be maximized.

Backlinks vs External Links vs Referral Links vs Outbound links
Hello all, I was just wondering if you could explain the difference between all the links above? I'm confused as they all seem to be the same or similar and I would just like to clearly know what distinguishes them from eachother. Thanks for your help, Jayne

Getting links on old blog posts
There's 100 of blogs with posts that link to my competitors, but don't link to my site. They are mostly lists. Eg: "The best Sites to get blue widgets" I was thinking about getting in touch with these blogs, and asking them to take a look at my site, to see if perhaps they would add it to the list. In fact, I started doing it and I got some links already. Now I am starting to worry that Google could consider these links as unnatural, because, you know, the algos are not exactly perfect. Anyway, the links are important for the exposure anyway. I've two questions: 1. Is there any chance I'll be penalized? 2. May I get a SEO benefit from this links?

Should I disavow spammy links that are showing in Open Site Explorer but not showing in Google Webmaster Tools?
Howdy Mozzers, After carrying out a backlink audit for a client, Open Site Explorer shows a range of outrageously spammy links for guys wanting a bit of assistance in the bedroom area, and so on. Hopping over to Google Webmaster Tools, there is no reported trace of said spammy links (for either of the www/non-www versions of the site). There are also no manual webspam actions found on the www/non-www Google Webmaster Tools accounts for this website. So my question is: do I carry out a pre-emptive strike and go down the disavow process of requesting removal from the spammy sites, and then submit a disavow request to Google after allowing a suitable period of time for the junky/compromised website to (not) respond? Or do I just leave it alone? Thanks in advance for your wise words of wisdom and pearls of clarity.

A link with "return false"- OSE sees as a No Followed Link
Hello, I couldn't find a clear answer to the impact on SEO for a link written in this way: [" class="expert_info" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">](w</span>ww.yourwebsite.com<span style=) [Does the "return false" act as a "no follow"? I came across this in our link data in Open Site Explorer which lists these links all as "no follows." However, an engineer I spoke to said that it shouldn't impact search engine behavior. Any ideas? Thank you in advance! -Sarah K.](w</span>ww.yourwebsite.com<span style=)

Ideas for structuring contest to get links?
Hi Mozzers, So I'm getting all set to run a contest. The prizes are great and I've developed a good way to promote it via paid and natural venues. I'm just not sure how to structure the actual contest so the end result is more links than mentions. One idea I had was to make this a story telling contest where the contestant blogs about a good/bad experience within the niche industry and adds a link back to us to enter. Does this seem like to much effort for the user? Prices are worth about $250 each, and I plan to have 3 winners. Any ideas on how to better gear this towards link building is appreciated. Thanks!
