Joomla's weblink component, do the links count as backlinks?
-
If your using the default Joomla weblink component do the links you add to others sites count as backlinks to those sites?
example: http://www.yakangler.com/helpful-links/26-fishing-blogs-sites
-
Wow lots of different views on if they count or not...
-
No, it'll not be counted as backlink.
This is how Google crawls 303 redirects:
website example1.com 303 redirects to website example2.com, search result in search engines would be:
Title: Page Title example2.com
URI: example1.com
Meta Description: Meta description example2.comSo it is confirmed that the 303 redirect does not pass link juice, so it would not even be counted as a backlink
-
Cool - I shall mail you.
-
Thanks I'll see if there are any settings to adjust, I think it's retarded that Joomla would offer a built in link component that adds links like that by default.
sidenote: yes it's my site you can pm me on the site or shoot me an email at mark (at) yakangler (dot)com

It's impossible to say definitively as only Google know for sure what Google decide to give weight to. However looking at that page there are 3 issues surrounding those links.
- The links are no-follow
On paper this means that you are not passing authority through those links, although many (including me) don't quite believe that is true in all cases. However it means that either less or none is likely to be passed. - The links are masked and redirected
This puts a lot of people off when looking at links, but there isn't actually much problem is have a link go through a redirect script in itself. Some PR is lost, but most still passes - The redirects are 303 redirects
Wow - don't see those often! Most SEO discussions revolve around 301 vs 302 redirects. Those links use a 303, which technically means "see elsewhere". As I say, these are not that common any more so I don't have much recent experience with them. However last time I looked neither Google nor Bing seemed to be passing authority through 303 redirects.
Short answer then is "probably not". However it's always nice to understand why. You might find that the module has settings that allow you to change some of the factors above. follow/no follow is not an uncommon setting in such modules. Redirect type is less so, but sometimes offered.
I hope that helps.
Slightly off-topic question: Are you involved in that Yakangler site? If you are I'd like to drop you a message about something else.
- The links are no-follow
-
Hi Mark,
Yes they do, however the links get redirected by Joomla via a 303. So the link value is not that big like if you should give them a direct link.
Hope this helps!

Internal links: How do I find keywords that are not linked to a URL?
Hi Moz members I'd really like to place an internal link of every instance of an important keyword phrase "cycling caps" or "cycling cap" to my eComm category page
Link Building | | andystorey
https://www.prendas.co.uk/collections/headwear/cotton-caps I feel this would not only help my customers browsing my store, but I believe it will help from an SEO perspective. How can I search my site using Moz, Screaming Frog, Google etc to find every time cycling cap(s) is used but is not linked to the above URL? I can then apply the same for cycling jerseys, socks, etc Andy0 -
Directory listings for a new site and it's implications on SEO
Hi all, In classic newb style I have submitted my new site to several uk directory listings after seeing these listings used by competitors, both local and national. I chose ones with a low-spam score as shown on the Moz site explorer. Now my domain score has jumped up several places over a few days, as has my search position, but will these listings "hurt" in the future? I fully intend on chasing and gaining non-quick'n'easy links in the future for he record. Many thanks!

Is there an extra SEO benefit for linking to pages that link to you?
Currently working on a link-building strategy and have gotten a few mentions. Just curious if there is any SEO benefits of linking back to the pages my site was mentioned and linked on? Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks!

When do my links show up?
For the last two weeks I have been working on linkbuilding. I have downloaded competitors link reports and started contacting or submitting links. In the last two weeks I have gotten about 50-60 or so. In the newest report it shows I went up four c-blocks. Why is that? It is kind of discouraging.

How would one get on the Huff Po's "Around the Web" list?
On the huffington post they often have lists of links related to the article, near the bottom just before the comments. This section, when present, is called "Around the Web". See this as an example: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/linda-bacon-phd-ma-ma/health-at-every-size_b_1314339.html Do the article authors choose these links, or are they auto-generated somehow? I had a relatively small competitor appear here, so I'm wondering if there are any tricks to gett included. Thanks! Edited to add hyperlink

Free link on a Paid Link Blog
Hi there, I have been doing some outreaching, and managed to have a blog post accepted on a authority blog. They included links to my website, and I was very pleased with the placement. However, having browsed through the site, I was worried to see that they openly admit they allow 'reviews' of websites, with backlinks included, for $50 per review. I am worried I might be penalised without actually doing anything wrong. I did not pay for my link, but the link has been placed on a site which openly admits they accept payment for links. Should I be worried? Should I ask them to take it down? To date I have been told countless times by bloggers I am outreaching that if I pay $10, $50, $100 etc I can write a blog post. I have never accepted because of the risk of penalization. Now, unwittingly, I am linked to from a paid link site with a blog post that would look like I have paid for it because of the placement and style of back link. What do you think? Thanks,
