Why did google pick this page to rank over another one?
-
I recently started working here and I have noticed that google is ranking some pages over other for the main key word.
Example:
We are ranking on page one for ATV tires for this url http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/43/81/165/723/ATV-Tires-All
I thought google would pick
http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires since it is higher up in the folders.
I Have a couple reasons why the are picking the other one. Mostly from link signals from one other site and footer link.. Any other thoughts.
If we want google to rank the second url instead what would you suggest?
-
Yes i used the tools and i got the same results you did. My question is if I use some anchor text and point them to the second page from the first page and other relevant pages on the site will it help with the rankings?
Real example:
I want to have it rank for motorcycle tires, however, gogole is ranking http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/cl/50/Tires-and-Wheels the highest and also it puts
http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/d/12/Motorcycle-Tires
and http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/49/-/181/750/Motorcycle-Tires-All
before http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/49/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires and this is the one they wan to rank. I started working here about 1 month ago and I am looking at ways I can get the target page to rank. Right now it is now where and the non target page is ranking on page three. Why does google pick that page over the target one?

Hi DoRM,
I paste for you the Page SeoMoz metrics taken from the SEOMoz bar and from the on page report card:
PA: 27 mR: 5.13 mT: 5.76
Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 132 - http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires
PA: 23 mR: 3.82 mT: 5.54
Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 124
Higher page authority, rank and trust are serious reasons for the search engine to give higher ranking to a page.
Plus, the on-page SeoMoz report grades both pages with A, but reports more keyword occurrencies in the first page.
So for both on/off the page metrics the first page results in being ranked better.
I hope this can be a starting point.

Moving Content From One Site To Another
Generally speaking if I am just moving a couple of articles from one site to another I need to 301 redirect those old URL's to the new ones right? And even if a webpage doesn't have any links pointing to it, it is best practice to employ 301 redirects correct? After a while, after Google etc. has crawled the new location of the content you can then delete the old URL, is that right? And if other sites are linking to the old location they should be notified of the new location but even if a page has links pointing to it, is it best practice to delete that page after Google has crawled the new and you've notified the webmaster? I've think I've got this right, I just want some clarification on this issue. Thanks.

Google showing https:// page in search results but directing to http:// page
We're a bit confused as to why Google shows a secure page https:// URL in the results for some of our pages. This includes our homepage. But when you click through it isn't taking you to the https:// page, just the normal unsecured page. This isn't happening for all of our results, most of our deeper content results are not showing as https://. I thought this might have something to do with Google conducting searches behind secure pages now, but this problem doesn't seem to affect other sites and our competitors. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how we get around it?

Many Pages Being Combined Into One Long Page
Hi All, In talking with my internal developers, UX, and design team there has been a big push to move from a "tabbed" page structure (where as each tab is it's own page) to combining everything into one long page. It looks great from a user experience standpoint, but I'm concerned that we'll decrease in rankings for the tabbed pages that will be going away, even with a 301 in place. I initially recommending#! or pushstate for each "page section" on the long form content. However there are technical limitations with this in our CMS. The next idea I had was to still leave those pages out there and to link to them in the source code, but this approach may get shot down as well. Has anyone else had to solve for this issue? If so, how did you do it?

How to rank in Google Places
Normally, I don't have a problem with local SEO (more of a multi-channel sort of online marketing guy) but this one has got me scratching my head. Look at https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wedding+venues+in+essex Theres two websites there (fennes and quendon park) that both have a much more powerful DA but don't appear in the Google Places (Google + Business or whatever it's labeled as). Why are websites such as Boreham house ranking top in the map listings? Quendon Park has a Google places listing, it's full of content, the NAP all matches up. Its a stronger website. Boreham House isn't any closer to the centroid than Quendon Park Just got me struggling this one
