Preserving URL Structure from Os Commerce to Magento
-
I have a website that is built on OS Commerce and I am planning to transition to Magento.
I was told that the transition to Magento would change my url structure.
How do I preserve my current url structure while migrating to the Magento platform so that I do not lose my backlink profile.
-
How many products does your store have?
Magento have an option call "URL Rewrite Management" (Catalog > URL Rewrite Management)
If you have a few products you can change the URLs manually to match OsCommerce.
If you have a lot products you should:
1 - Export SKU and URL from OsCommerce to CSV. (ask a PHP developer to make script for you)
2 - Import the spreadsheet to magento with the columns named: SKU and url_key
If your site is really big you will need a third part magento extension to import the categories. Magento do not have any native function to import categories.

I will go with the suggestion of Rewrite rule plus if you think that the URL structure on osCommerce is less SEO friendly then Magento then you can the URL structure and use 301 redirect so that link juice didn’t lost plus no user see a 404 page while visiting the website.
Hope this helps!

If you do a 301 redirect then the juice isn't lost. You lose a bit in the process but not all. Just as it was a regular link in the middle between the link clicked and your Website.

I always thought that if you changed a URL, whatever backlinks that linked to that URL are lost (or re-directed to the new link) but that all juice that was given to that page is lost.
Can anyone elaborate on this topic?

How about a rewrite rule?
To redirect products, you can use something like this:
OSCommerce URL: http://www.domain.com/your-product-name-p-123.html
Magento url (assuming product names are the same when importing the products): http://www.domain.com/your-product-name.html
.htaccess:
RewriteRule ^(.*)-p-(.*)\.html$ $1.html [L]
However, I would actually use a redirect, you loose some link juice, but it's minimum (with something like this):
RewriteRule ^(.*)-p-(.*)\.html$ $1.html [R=301,L]
Hope that helps!

Menu Structure for Large Ecommerce
Hi We have a large ecommerce site, the menu at the moment is limited by the amount of categories we can display. As our site is so large, the menu at the moment only has the top categories and their immediate subcategories, however we have level 3's which go deeper, as there is such a large range. At the moment, they;re not in the top menu, but I want to put a case forward to say why we should include them - I am however mindful of a menu not being overcrowded with hundreds of links. Has anyone had a similar experience of this? Or a case study on how adding important categories to the menu helped improve things? Becky

Trailing Slashes for Magento CMS pages - 2 URLS - Duplicate content
Hello, Can anyone help me find a solution to Fixing and Creating Magento CMS pages to only use one URL and not two URLS? www.domain.com/testpage www.domain.com/testpage/ I found a previous article that applies to my issue, which is using htaccess to redirect request for pages in magento 301 redirect to slash URL from the non-slash URL. I dont understand the syntax fully in htaccess , but I used this code below. This code below fixed the CMS page redirection but caused issues on other pages, like all my categories and products with this error: "This webpage has a redirect loop ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS" Assuming you're running at domain root. Change to working directory if needed. RewriteBase / # www check If you're running in a subdirectory, then you'll need to add that in to the redirected url (http://www.mydomain.com/subdirectory/$1 RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. [NC]

RewriteRule ^(.)$ $1/ [L,R=301] Finally, forward everything to your front-controller (index.php) RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

What's the best possible URL structure for a local search engine?
Hi Mozzers, I'm working at AskMe.com which is a local search engine in India i.e if you're standing somewhere & looking for the pizza joints nearby, we pick your current location and share the list of pizza outlets nearby along with ratings, reviews etc. about these outlets. Right now, our URL structure looks like www.askme.com/delhi/pizza-outlets for the city specific category pages (here, "Delhi" is the city name and "Pizza Outlets" is the category) and www.askme.com/delhi/pizza-outlets/in/saket for a category page in a particular area (here "Saket") in a city. The URL looks a little different if you're searching for something which is not a category (or not mapped to a category, in which case we 301 redirect you to the category page), it looks like www.askme.com/delhi/search/pizza-huts/in/saket if you're searching for pizza huts in Saket, Delhi as "pizza huts" is neither a category nor its mapped to any category. We're also dealing in ads & deals along with our very own e-commerce brand AskMeBazaar.com to make the better user experience and one stop shop for our customers. Now, we're working on URL restructure project and my question to you all SEO rockstars is, what can be the best possible URL structure we can have? Assume, we have kick-ass developers who can manage any given URL structure at backend.

Received "Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site:" but most of the example URLs are noindexed.
An example URL can be found here: http://symptom.healthline.com/symptomsearch?addterm=Neck%20pain&addterm=Face&addterm=Fatigue&addterm=Shortness%20Of%20Breath A couple of questions: Why is Google reporting an issue with these URLs if they are marked as noindex? What is the best way to fix the issue? Thanks in advance.
