Will you get more 'google juice' if your social links are in your websites header, rather than its footer?
-
Hi team,
I'm in the process of making some aesthetic changes to my website. Its getting quite cluttered so the main purpose is to clean up its look.
I currently have 3x social links in the header, right at the top, and i would really like to move these to the footer to remove some clutter in the header. My concern is that moving them may have an impact on the domains ranking in google.
Website: www.mountainjade.co.nz
We've made some huge gains against our competitors over the past 6 months and I don't want to jeopardise that.
Any help would be much appreciated as i'm self taught in SEO and have learnt through making mistakes. This time however, with Moz, i'd rather get some advice before I make any decisions!
Thanks is advance,
Jake S

Thanks for this Travis,
I took your advice and tracked the appropriate pages in Crazy Egg. The results confirmed my thinking, a very small number of visitors use the social links. Around 1%.
Regardless however, i've decided to keep them in the header for that 1%.
Best,

Hi Jane
Thanks for letting me know that the move won't affect our rankings. I've decided to keep the social profiles in the header, but strip them of color to make them more discrete.
Great point re: expected drop in visits to the social profiles, however with Crazy Egg I noticed that only around 1% of visitors click the social links, so it's rather minor in the scheme of things.
Take care!

Hello fellow Kiwi!
Moving the links to the company's social profiles won't make any difference to how well www.mountainjade.co.nz ranks, but it will make them much less visible and probably result in fewer clicks to each one. Do visitors to the website click on these at the moment? I would expect that traffic to drop substantially if the buttons are placed in the footer.
I honestly don't see these as a contributing to clutter or being an issue - they are fairly discrete both in terms of coding and aesthetics at the moment.

People like Jade. Why can't I like your individual products on the social medias? Maybe I can't afford whatever right now, maybe I never could - but I could put your site in front of thousands of people, with the click of a button.
I wouldn't recommend removing it from the header area. That is so minor, but if you must do so - at least observe traffic for a difference during a certain time period.

Another company's website indexing for my site
Hi, I am looking at all the pages which Google are indexing for my website and have come across pages of another company's website. I have contacted them through their online form and Facebook page asking for them to remove their listings for us, but to no avail so far. Is there a way I can do this myself?

Does rel= canonical combine link juice for 2 pages?
If two pages are very similar, and one should rel= canonical to the other, will the page authority pass from the page with rel= canonical to the target page? Also, what happens when you a page rel=canonical's to itself?

Google insists robots.txt is blocking... but it isn't.
I recently launched a new website. During development, I'd enabled the option in WordPress to prevent search engines from indexing the site. When the site went public (over 24 hours ago), I cleared that option. At that point, I added a specific robots.txt file that only disallowed a couple directories of files. You can view the robots.txt at http://photogeardeals.com/robots.txt Google (via Webmaster tools) is insisting that my robots.txt file contains a "Disallow: /" on line 2 and that it's preventing Google from indexing the site and preventing me from submitting a sitemap. These errors are showing both in the sitemap section of Webmaster tools as well as the Blocked URLs section. Bing's webmaster tools are able to read the site and sitemap just fine. Any idea why Google insists I'm disallowing everything even after telling it to re-fetch?

4 websites on same IP crosslinking in footer
Hello, we have 3 separate websites and domains. Industry directory websites Industrialdomain.com DA:62, 8yrs old Medicaldomain.com DA:45, 8yrs old and Hosptalitydomain.com DA:24, 1yr old These sites are cross linked site-wide via footer links and the sites flow a substantial amount of well converting traffic between each other. How does Google see this? Could we place the links in a better position than the footer? The links should be site-wide as we receive many deep visits to these sites from organic and PPC sources. Our traffic is down 20% post penguin, we are going through the backlinks now and weeding out some iffy links but the site has never been forum spammed or anything even close to that. One other thing is that they are linked to with anchor text type links

Changing to a new Google Analytics Profile - Will I lose my history?
Hello, I have a new client and due to issues with the way the original Google Analytics account was set up, the owner won't make me an admin. So, I'm forced to create a new GA profile. I'm about to update my Campaign, but wonder if the data SEOMoz has accumulated over the last few weeks will disappear, or if it will just look forward with the new GA account? Any advice is most appreciated. ~Robin

Has google panelized us ? If so, why ? How do I know if our website is panelized ?
We were ranked on first page among top 5 position a year ago for most of our pages. On one fine day, google decided to drop us from the results although google keeps indexing our pages. Google index our pages regularly but doesn't show them in its results. All google traffic we receive is for our own site name and its variations. I wanted to know - how do we know if google has panelized us. Why has google panelized us ? If they have panelized us, what can we do to get out of it ? Also I wanted to know if any tool will help me identify such thing. We have not done any link building. Our site page rank is 4 (it was 5 few months ago). All we did was on page optimization. Thanks for your help!
