How can I limit the impact of Google's mobile friendly updates on keyword rankings?
-
Hi everyone,
I have a client on a monthly SEO package that is taking a hard hit in the rankings as their website is not mobile friendly.
We are currently building a new website for them that will be fully responsive, but face the predicament of how to keep the current site performing relatively well in the rankings in the meantime.
The site is generally well optimised and we always follow SEO best practices, so we've hit a bit of a stumbling block as to how to limit any negative impact the mobile friendly updates have on the site.
Does anyone have any suggestions for damage limitation? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Definitely agree here, there isn't a "patch" or "quick fix" for this one.
Get mobile friendly and focus your efforts on doing it correctly and in a timely manner and you should be able to bounce back over time.

I have a site that fits this description. I was working on lots of other important stuff as mobile-friendly rankings date approached. I was going to "wait and see if this is really important." When google first started using mobile friendly as a ranking factor there was little change in rankings. Lately mobile rankings seem to be more important and traffic/rankings dropped more.
I am not going to "do something" to mitigate. I really don't think that there is a "patch". So I called the person working on mobile friendly and asked her for twice as much time until finished. I am simply going to get the mobile done right, done faster.

Rankings go up and down, up and down, up and down
Almost every week we have more than a two dozen keywords that will all suddenly increase in rank only to then decrease in rank right back to where they were the previous week. This happens constantly despite the fact that we are doing very little SEO-wise on a week-to-week basis. What might be causing these constant shifts?

Keyword ranking tool
Hello, What is best practice for knowing if a keyword is too difficult to try to rank for. i understand the keyword difficulty tool in seoMOZ, but am unsure of how it actually relates to if I should attempt to rank for the keyword. Is there a differential people use such as if a site has a Page Authority of 60 we will not try to rank for a keyword that has a keyword difficulty ranking of 40?

How can I update On Page Optimization Reports following 301 redirect?
A few weeks ago I ran the SEOMoz On Page Optimization Reports for one of my sites. At the time, the site homepage was duplicated .com/ and .com/index.html (I know!). The On Page Optimisation Reports I ran at the time obviously included both as individual pages. I've now corrected the duplicate issue with a 301 but the On Page Optimization Reports are still looking at the rankings for .com/index.html and therefore showing "not in top 50" for keywords where I'm actually ranking 1st - any idea how I can get the reports to update so they don't continue to look for .com/index.html? Thanks!
