I have a hypothesis that the % of users that type URLs is decreasing. Instead I think users will be arriving at sites by clicking on links in emails, search and social.
Where can I find data / research to back me up?
I'm slightly confused though - why is the tracking id using centrum.sk/?
I see that the BBC is linking to them, not sure if this is cause or effect:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15778377
Maybe they just googled Benetton and lifted the URL?
OMG - yeah not only the weird tracking parameters URL but the main homepage (www.benetton.com) is noindex, nofollow which I suspect will screw things up a little..... Wow.
For this search:
https://www.google.com/search?q=benetton&pws=0
I see the following URL ranking #1
http://www.benetton.com/?utm_source=centrum.sk&utm_medium=listing
Why is this happening? I could likely figure it out but I'm busy so I was hoping someone could dig around and let me know
Anyone?
Incidentally, Benetton is in the middle of a massive campaign at the moment so it's strange timing for them to have this showing up and screwing with their GA tracking...
EDIT: I should clarify, Benetton is not a client - I don't know anyone who works for or with them. I'm just curious why this is showing up.
Heh - beers away! Happy to help
Hi, Tom here - I helped put together the ranking factors this year and you'll find that link velocity is included in the domain level link metrics section:
http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors#metrics-1
It actually rated pretty highly!
Depends on your use case but this is a good resource:
Personally I really like VWO: http://visualwebsiteoptimizer.com/ I like the way you don't need heavy code changes to run tests.
Hmm, I definitely think there is a page level element but Google have gone on record to say there's also a domain level impact.
I imagine that the definition Google holds of a "site" is used in this case rather than slapping the whole domain.
Does anyone have any case studies or examples of sites where a specific sub-domain was hit by Panda while other sub-domains were fine?
What's the general consensus on whether this was applied at the sub-domain or root-domain level?
My thinking is that Google already knows broadly whether a "site" is a root-domain (e.g. SEOmoz) or a sub-domain (e.g. tumblr) and that they use this logic when rolling out Panda.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions though?
Yeah, all of these data providers are a little suspect. Especially compete!
Tough question! Ignoring both seomoz and distilled I'd probably go for:
Hmm - not sure I'm trusting those graphs. SEOmoz didn't see any change one way or the other with Panda...
This is a great point - I'd love to include some HTML5 goodness in there.
Yeah, all of these data providers are a little suspect. Especially compete!
Hey folks,
Do you all remember the developer's SEO cheat sheet? It's super awesome. But it's also a little old.
What super awesome ideas do you have for the updated version?
What should we include? What should we take out?
Any developers around - what SEO knowledge would you most like to see in a cheat sheet?
Thanks!
As you may be aware - SEOmoz are hiring for a marketing oracle (one of 8 jobs going at the moment: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/8-open-positions-at-seomoz). Their key responsibility will be to produce world class content about online marketing, seo and social media.
So, let ask you - what are the best examples of content in this space from the past 12 months? The very best of the best. Don't just think SEO, but any kind of online marketing content. Whether it's editorial, infographic, research etc etc.

Great links Ed! Thanks for sharing. Got any more from the wider online marketing space? I think I see all the good SEO stuff but I'd love to know what's been big that's more similar to the "Poke the box" workbook (which I'm checking out right now...)
Thanks!
This is a good idea - the code needed to embed a twitter/facebook widget would be useful as this is a common SEO task.

9/12/2011 I'll admit it, I just love Hipmunk. In this post I'm going to outline an SEO strategy for them for all to see. I thought it would be interesting to get hands-on with a particular site (not something we do often here on the moz blog) and potentially handy for the Hipmunk team too! Interestingly there's a question of if they should even be investing in S...
8/15/2011 Being a chrome junkie and also a keen productivity evangelist I'm predictably a huge fan of javascript bookmarklets. I use them all day long and over time I've built up a few that I have made myself that I thought I'd share today. What is a javascript bookmarklet? A javascript bookmarklet is a small piece of javascript code that you can execute in your browser by bookmarking a l...
5/10/2011 Producing great content is a high ROI activity. Too often however I see people focused on producing individual pieces of content aiming to get links and attention. Putting together a content strategy requires much more than a single piece of content - it requires a vision and strategy for how you're going to publish your content, why type of content you will be publishing, how your audience wil...

10/18/2010 1) Regex for Counting " " and "/" Regex is teh awesome. I don't claim to be amazing at it but there are a few common regex strings I use all the time in my analysis. Length of Keyword To quickly filter your keywords report by the length of keyword, I use some regex to count the number of spaces in the keyword like this: ^([^ ]+ ...
8/30/2010 We all love backlinks. We all love visualisation. Boom! Let's mash those two things together. In this post I've collected a bunch of different techniques for visualising your link data. Some of these are useful for analysis, some are useful for management and some are useful for keeping Dr Pete entertained...... :-)
7/19/2010 Paywalls are a hot topic online at the moment. In the UK The Times has recently put their whole site behind a pay wall and in early 2011 the New York Times is set to also go behind a pay wall. Both of these sites are part of the News Corporation empire and join sites such as the Wall Street Journal which has been behind a paywall for some time already. For those who aren't familiar with how pay...
7/5/2010 Wouldn't it be great if you could somehow spot those SEO opportunities on your site which were low effort and high value? Well this post gives you a few ways you can do that! Sweet. I'm going to be digging around in the recently released search queries report in Google Webmaster Tools:...
5/24/2010 Howdy mozzers. Since a lot of people in the search space are geeks, it naturally follows that there are plenty of single SEO guys and gals. Therefore this post is for you. (Note: there are actually some good SEO tips scattered in the post too so even if you're not single you might want to read on!). Disclaimer: I'm going to reference OKCupid through...
5/3/2010 User Generated Content pretty much rules the web these days. If a website isn't including comments, blogs, reviews, thumbs up or polls then frankly it might as well be a book instead of a website. Lame. So this post is all about how to squeeze the most SEO benefit out of your user generated content. Remember folks that even if you don't have "classical" user generated content t...
4/12/2010 Ok, so the stage is set - you've figured out what it is that makes your company (or website) better or different from your competitors. You've figured out your USP. Now, you need to package that USP up and exchange it for links.
3/29/2010 There's been some talk recently in the SEO industry about 'crawl allowance' - it's not a new concept but Matt Cutts recently talked about it openly with Eric Enge at StoneTemple (and you can see Rand's illustr...
3/22/2010 I was at a recent client meeting for a new project and we were brainstorming ideas. After considering all kinds of wacky schemes, plots, techniques and tactics we came up with what is, in essencce, a very simple linkbuilding technique. In the interests of openess I wanted to share it with you, I'm just nice like that :-) This idea works best when you are working in an industry where the...

1/18/2010 So it's a new year (doesn't 2010 feel like the future?!) and it's a new you. As Pete blogged last week plenty of new year's resolutions are being set. 12/14/2009 This past week saw the launch of Google's real-time search and quite frankly everyone flipped out. And justifiably so, it's not often that our SERPs get torn up so much in a new way like this. Questions I'd love to see the answer to are things like: What triggers rea...
11/30/2009 There are literally a bazillion SEO tools on the internet (literally!), this post discusses just one such tool; Xenu's Link Sleuth. Many people in the SEO industry are already aware of this tool but many people I've spoken to only treat the tool as a broken link finder. It's so much more than that. This post is aimed at those who haven't heard of it before and those who do use it re...

9/21/2009 Howdy Folks, Unlike most of the posts that I've put out recently which are more strategy based this post is a from-the-trenches-tip which I've recently come across that I thought I'd share. 9/7/2009 One thing that you'll hear over and over again in the SEO industry is "make sure that you embed SEO in your business". I know I've said it a lot at conferences and in client meetings but what does it actually mean? Well this post is chock full of tips to help you actually embed SEO in your business. Since I've not long come back from the Seattle SEOmoz Pro Training Seminar (which was tot...
7/7/2009 Hi Folks, While brainstorming potential blog post topics I decided that keyphrase research doesn't get enough love here and I merrily agreed to write a post on the topic. Little did I know that this would result in a morning of maths. Monday morning to be precise. Monday maths morning. I might make that a recurring theme. This post is going to be all about the adcente...
6/15/2009 Google Authorization is a topic which crops up a fair amount in our day-to-day search wanderings. Not really because clients are asking if we're authorized but more because they always claim that previous SEO companies they received pitches from claimed to be Google Authorized SEO consultants. Unfortunately (fortunately?!) no such certification exists so we have to set them straight....
6/1/2009 Hello hello, today I'm going to talk a little about Google Local. The things I'm talking about aren't necessarily new or ground-breaking, but I think it's important to expose them to the Moz readership as Local isn't something that's talked about all that often on here and there are quite a few intricacies which you should be aware of when dealing with local optimisation, particularly for clients who have many locations and who rely on using a bulk upload to Google Local.
5/4/2009 While answering Q&A the other day it occurred to me that a lot of questions we see are basically the same question asked over and over again in different formats. In answering these questions we often end up re-using the same responses time and time again so I thought it would be a good idea to create a bit of an FAQ based off some of the most informative questions and answers which we've answ...
4/20/2009 Hello, my name is Tom, you've seen me guest blog here before but today I'm blogging and ill. So I'm going to dispense with the usual chit-chat approach and lay out the facts. Some of you may even like it that way! Shame on you. Still, here's the content.
4/14/2009 The inspiration for this blog post came to me when I was lying on my sofa reading the Guardian newspaper over the weekend. I was at home and so didn't have any of the following to hand: * iphone * pen * regular phone * internet
3/19/2009 Hello, I'm here today to talk about Google penalties. There's much talk and confusion in the SEO industry about penalties. We're always seeing in Q&A questions like: Do I have a penalty? Why do I have a penalty? How can I get rid of my penalty? ...
3/9/2009 Over the weekend I was lucky enough to attend ThinkVisibility, a conference in Leeds (UK) where I was speaking on reputation management. Here's a quick roundup of the conference for you UK types - there's another conference in September and tickets were only £30 this time around which was a right bargain - just take a look at t...
2/6/2009 Sometimes the power of the internet and the modern age just astounds me. I'll see something that I just need to share and this is one of those times. It's not necessarily about SEO directly but it certainly demonstrates some amazing internet marketing and it re-emphasis just how powerful data and original content is.
1/9/2009 Happy New Year, Mozzers! I hope you all had a good break. I was going to write a 2009 predictions post but then I realised that I have no idea what's going to happen this year. Facebook will go offline? Brazil will go on sale for 13p and Twitter will buy them? God knows. Anyway, instead of doing that I decided to write a post with something useful in it.
12/19/2008 This post needs very little introduction. I’ve scoured the web, my bookmarks and Twitter (thanks guys!) for all the very best articles about PPC that I can find. I’ve broken the links down into several categories to make it easier to read. Enjoy!
11/28/2008 I like talking about link building - it is, after all, one of the most important rankings factors (hey Rand, when's that going to be updated?) and also one of the things people struggle with the most in the SEO industry. So here's some more tip...
11/7/2008 This week saw a few momentous events, of which I'll name two: the election and SMX London. The election seems to have been covered in a few other places, so I'm going to focus on SMX. It was a pretty awesome venue and a lot of fun. Here's a picture of me, Jay, Rob and Wiep sitting on the link building panel being dwarfed by Lyndon's lemon-coloured presentation.
10/16/2008 So this weekend I had a bit of free time so I decided to learn how to play go (narrowly beating chess I might add). Now as anyone who's familiar with go will know, it will probably take me more than a weekend to learn how to play but still, you have to start somewhere right!? Of course, being an internet junkie one of the first things I did was Google around to find some information online about g...
9/24/2008 So I recently read a post by e-consultancy which looked at 10 things Asda (a huge UK supermarket, part of the Wal-Mart group) could do better online. The post is part of a series where they look at a number of large brands in the UK and how they can perform better online. The series focuses solely on usability though and doesn't actually mention any online marketing. So I thought I'd step up to th...

8/11/2008 An alternative title for this would be "headsmacking linkbuilding tip #1" but I'm not sure this will be a whole series so I'm going to play it safe with a title which doesn't force me to come up with these ideas on a regular basis. I know, I'm lazy. Bite me! Talking of being lazy - I'm always looking for ways to jumpstart linkbuilding campaigns and cut corners and if my kn...
7/9/2008 There's been a fair amount of buzz recently about online reputation management and how to do it. One thing which I think has been missing from the discussion however is looking at the different ways a negative reputation can manifest itself online. After all, not all negative reputations are created equal. Sometimes it's a page that looks innocuous but contains mildly negative negative things once...
6/19/2008 Before I launch into my inagural moz blog post let me make one thing clear. I'm not a blackhat. We don't do blackhat work for clients and frankly I don't do that much of it in my free time either. Just thought I'd like to clear that up before I launch into talking about the shadier things online.... Again!
3/20/2008 Firstly, the title is incorrect it should actually read "the funniest moz comments I could remember and find from recent-ish times" but obviously that wasn't quite as snappy.Rummaging through the old moz comments has been a delight and I've loved rediscovering some of these gems. Who knew that techno geeks could be funny too?Shoulders of Doom anyone? Dr Pete'...
10/4/2007 I'm going to let you in on a secret. SEOmoz is about change. Just in the past couple of weeks Matt has announced he's leaving (best of luck again!) and Rand has broken the news that SEOmoz is taking on external funding. As well as all that though, I can still remember when premium content launched and when Jane got hired. Jeez, I think I can even recall Rebecca getting hired.
6/28/2007 Wierdness Number 1 - Google only displays 36 results for a 'wikipedia' searchOk, so I was trawling the referring keywords to our blog the other day and noticed that we'd had 3 clicks for the keyphrase 'wikipedia' following this blog post on why wikipedia is ...
5/4/2007 There has been a lot of debate recently in "SEO News Land" (aka all the SEO blogs I subscribe to) about various testing Google has been doing. Particularly with how they treat the display of their paid ads. This morning I noticed something I hadn't seen before and no-one else in the office could re-create (on a side note - is it just co-incidence that they picked the one SEO...
