We all know analytics are important. As marketers, we spend a great deal of time in the data, and should feel that we have the data necessary to make great recommendations, troubleshoot issues, and forecast our efforts accurately. However, data can be intimidating. In today's post, Joanna Lord talks about the different types of analytics and common places to start with them.

It happened friends. After years of Rand exposing me to the many benefits of inbound marketing I am ready to admit it...[big gulp]...today's marketer needs to be doing more than paid marketing. In fact, I'd go as far as to say, if you are only doing paid marketing you are failing yourself and your company. THERE I SAID IT. I feel better. Way better actually.

For the past year retargeting has been getting some serious attention. I've been fortunate enough to speak on it at a variety of shows, brainstorm over coffee with some cool companies and even blog about it a few times. No matter who I am talking with or what the venue the number one question asked is "Who should I use for retargeting?"

In paid search there are a lot of rough Adwords accounts out there. You've seen them I'm sure. I know I've worked on them. We get brought in to assess the situation and make some big decisions around whether an account has potential or whether it would be better just to start fresh. This is one of the most common questions we get asked -- how am I doing?

I hope you all don't mind me straying from the usual a bit here today. Instead of a specifically SEO-related post, I instead want to tackle a related science, the art of "acquiring" and what that means in marketing.

Here at Moz we work hard to break down those silly silo things (frankly they scare us). We believe that the different pieces of marketing should constantly be communicating with each other. Cyrus (our SEO lead) and I try to communicate on what we are seeing, where we might be overlapping, dropping the proverbial ball and so on and so forth. We know that leveraging each person's daily activities for maximum impact is the key to any company's success.

I've wanted to write this post for a couple weeks now. The topic of retargeting and remarketing is hot, hot, hot. As more blog posts get written and more resources get pushed out, there still seems to be quite a bit of confusion around what it actually is, and how it is different from regular display media buys. This post is meant to help with that confusion and hopefully leave everyone w...

Imagine this scenario: It's Monday afternoon, you just spent the first half of your day wading through last week's stas, comparing metrics, data-mining for the greater good, and assembling it into an easy-to-digest summary that speaks to the stats of your company. You sit back, finish off your second (or fifth) cup of coffee, and hit "Send" on the all staff email alias. M...

I've been traveling for the past few weeks and talking to dozens of SEO consultants, and you know what they are all saying? They are at their max for clients. Yup, that's right...they can't take on new clients. They have TOO much work! This is good for all sorts of reasons. One, it shows we are in a good place during an economically difficult time, and two, there are people out there desperately seeking out your services, with nowhere to turn.

I don't like the word "optimization." It has surpassed the level of buzz word and has officially been overused in every which way. While the word itself annoys me, the process of improving what you have to get more from it still rings true. I think we can all get onboard with the concept, but what about the process behind it? I am constantly surprised by the number of people that tell me their boss or client simply doesn't want to spend time on landing page optimization.

Alright fellow data crunchers, you ready for the final post in our three-post series, "So You Call Yourself an Analyst?" The first post, "So You Call Yourself an Analyst, Part 1: Asking the Right Questions, walked through ways in which you could reevaluate the questions steering your analytical efforts.

Today I am going to talk about something that plagues companies and consultants everywhere--half baked analysis. It's something we've all done at some point, and something a lot of us still do on a regular basis. It's unfortunate because as online marketers we all understand the power of good data mining, but time and time again we revert to generic inquiry, at best, and default report tem...

Well yesterday was a big day on Twitter, wasn't it? I don't know about you but I was glued to the live stream of the not-so top secret Twitter press conference at exactly 3:30 pm and watched closely for an hour and a half while @Ev and @Biz told us all about the new "bigger and better" Twitter.com. The founders started by outlining many of the recent acheivem...

Internally we have spent the last few months redirecting our attention to not only the best practices regarding analytics and data mining, but really pushing ourselves to revisit our analytical processes. You know what we real...
