Log-in page ranking instead of homepage due to high traffic on login page! How to avoid?
-
Hi all,
Our log-in page is ranking in SERP instead of homepage and some times both pages rank for the primary keyword we targeted. We have even dropped. I am looking for a solution for this. Three points here to consider is:
- Our log-in page is the most visited page and landing page on the website.
- Even there is the primary keyword in this page or not; same scenario continues
- Log-in page is the first link bots touch when they crawling any page of our website as log-in page is linked on top navigation menu
If we move login page to sub-domain, will it works? I am worrying that we loose so much traffic to our website which will be taken away from log-in page sub domain
Please guide with your valuable suggestions.
Thanks

Hello Vtmoz,
Im not following you. You have clearly stated below: Noindexing the login page will force visitors from google on doing an extra step to log in.
-
Hi Linda,
Yes, I agree with you that we may not lose the traffic but again, most of the website visitors are going to end up at log-in page which might be a strong indicator to Google that most visitors are just interested about our log-in and this may dilute our ranking efforts of ranking other pages of the website including homepage.
Thanks

Hi GR,
Most of our website visitors intention is to get into log-in page as most of them are our customers. There are large number of people who will get into log-in page from website rather than directly. So, even if we noindex the login page, the people who are searching directly for our log-in page or who are clicking on the log-in page from the Google sitelinks after searching from our brand will not able to find; they may end manually with one more extra step of visiting the website first. Again the indicator is that most of the website page visitors are going to log-in page. How that works?
Thanks

I don't think you will lose traffic if you noindex the login page. People who are doing a search and then clicking on a login link are very likely to be specifically looking for you and if the login result is not there, they'll choose the next best page, like the homepage.
I second Gaston's comment about intent and usability. If searchers are going to be driven to a different page, you need to be sure that they can easily complete their task there.

Yeap, adding the noindex tag will remove that page from google results.
And no, there is no guarantee that rankings will improve nor go down by adding the noindex. It is just the patch in order to do not appear in search with a page you dont want to show. You should anlayze those incoming visitors to the log-in page and try to figure out wherer they were looking to log in into the web or anything else.
Also, consider the idea that removing from index that log in page, will make those visitor to do extra interactions with your website in order to log in. Is your UX prepared to that? Have you analyzed your audience for that?As you can see, there no simple answer, because you must take into consideration the intent and usability for those visitors.
Hope it helps.
Best luck.

Hi Gaston,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, we need it in the Google as many of our users are landing on that page from SERP only. If we add the tag as you mentioned, it'll be out of SERP right?
We don't want the traffic of log-in page as it's hitting the actual traffic and ranking of website. Do you think our ranking will be improved with this or we will be more dropped by loosing the traffic of log-in page?
Thanks

Hello vtmoz,
do you need that login page to be in google? this issue could be resolved just by adding a robots noindex tag in that page.
Here some more information about the Robots tag
Hope it helps.

Rank brain and User stats
We have a company that has very good link metrics (much better than competitors), great content, conversions and generates 3x the amount of turnover the other companies do. The issue is we are being challenged on our number one keywords by this competitor selling lower value items to get to 70% of the same amount of customers as us and I feel we can put this down to Rank brain and us having a strong sales force and due to this very few make it back to the websites (30% are new and 70% are repeat and for repeat we have a strong sales force unlike that competitor which catch the reorder before the make it back to the site again) so we lose the ctr, brand etc from the repeat not returning (the competitor only sells though the website so all return) In effect they have 500 customers and we have 200 so Ctr, brand, back to serp would be stronger could this effect the rankings? If you look at it like this Two companies with 500 customers (200 new and 300 repeat) 500 customers to the first all have to order online so 500 customers going back to serps, CTR up due to them searching to get the site up etc 500 customers for the second but 300 (the repeat) go though the sales lines and find the number on the email or agents call them when predicted to order again so never have to go back to the site = 40% less CTR and staying on the site customers

Seeing some really bad sites that ranked in my niche years ago reaching 1st page
It started after the update about 4 websites form the 1st page dropped to the 2nd and 4 of the other sites just popped back to the 1st page and the bad part is that the Da and inbound links of these sites are really bad, so my question is must we just wait this out till Google realises how bad these site are and some of them haven't been updated in years links broken i can go on and on. what these sites have is just the age of the domains, but can this really be the main focus of these results?

Lost Wikipedia page and dropped heavily in rankings. How many of you aware of and experienced this?
Hi all, We lost of our Wikipedia page for 2nd time and we dropped in rankings 2nd time too. I got confused first time whether Wikipedia was the actual reason as we had couple of major changes in our website. But recently it's been clear that losing Wikipedia page is the culprit as we have no website changes around these days. How many of you aware of this and experienced this? Please share your views. Hope this info will help you. Thanks

Ranking Well in Google But Not Bing - Why?
Hello Moz Community, I'm ranking well in Google (#2-#6 for various keywords) but on the second page of Bing. Are there certain differences that I should be aware of? Thanks, Cole

Puzzled by recent SERP results - what ranking factors cause this?
Hi mozzers, I have been using moz tools for a long while now for assessing SEO metrics with great success, but since recent Google algorithm updates I am seeing more and more SERPS that just simply don't make sense to me what so ever. The most startling recently was an assessment of one of the keywords my own site competes for "Link Building Services" The current No 1 position in Google.co.uk is held by http://www.napalit.org/ I invite all you seo experts out there to take a look at this site, look at it metrics in OSE compared with the "lower" competition and explain to me why it is No1. I would really like to know what ranking factors this site has that makes it "higher quality" and offer "better value" than the competition. I thought I understood what Google was trying to do with recent updates - get rid of non-value adding spammers and improve the quality of the search results. But now I am becoming more sceptical. Are they just making it impossible for us to make a difference by following good SEO practices so we all resort to paying for Adwords? I hope you guys out there can help me with this one and restore my faith. Thanks

Advice on breaking page 3 SERP?
I've worked extremely hard re-ranking for the key word "kayak fishing" after our site migration and panda/penguin our site www.yakangler.com was lost in the doldrums. I couldn't find us on any of the results page 1 thru page 64. The good news is we have managed to make it to page 3 for the past month but I feel like we have hit a wall. I can't seem to get any more moment in my SERP for "kayak fishing" Google US. Anyone have any recommendations on what I should do to move us up more? We have good content that is updated daily, an active community and forum. site: www.yakangler.com key word: kayak fishing

Organic Rank Volitility
Does anyone else see their organic rankings fluctuating wildly. I have been tracking a few key keywords by literaly typing them in each morning and looking at results. The pages I have been doing this for where without any doubt affected by Penguin as you can see the huge drop in traffic directly correlated to the Pegnuin deployment. What is strange is one day these phrases will be on page one position 3 and two days later but on page3 to 5 or not ranked. Four days later back on page 1. These are wild fluctuations so it appears to me that I am observing Penguin tweaking ? Just wish the tweaking would stop on one of the days were our phases for this particular site are on page one. Most people would check rankings weekly, monthly or quarter and would not perhaps be observing these crazy swings? Thought?

New Blog Post Ranking Fluctuation
I wrote a recent blog post on Friday. It was indexed and ranked on the first page on Monday. On Wednesday, it was nowhere to be found. I noticed that, after a few more recent posts, it was on page two of my blog. So I expanded my results so that it was back on my first page. Today, it is back on the first page - same spot as before. Was that my problem, or could it be something else I am unaware of?
