Build links through blogging?
-
Although my site is a wordpress site it presently has about as many static pages as blog posts. The site has a lot of directory links and is doing pretty good with a PR3 after about a year. When I first put the site up I had a well known blogging expert help me with the permalinks and a couple of other things and he said that with a blog there is no need to build links, it can all be done through natural link acquisition off of the blog posts. I was skeptical at the time because it seemed that a lawyer's site was something not a lot of people would be interested enough in to link to it. Now I am thinking about trying his stragegy, as 1 of my blog posts that I put up on a very topical subject immediately got about 15 backlinks.
My questions are:
-
Is it reasonable to try to build links just by posting frequent topical blog posts?
-
If yes, should I have links in the blog posts to my home page, to internal pages, or both?

Great question and Dan already provided a superb answer I would just like to add my 2 cents. It is valid to assume that posting topical content can gain you links but the truth of the matter is we can't know for certain what will float . We've created content that we thought was top notch only to see it wither and die by the wayside and some times we'd just throw something together and that gets picked up and generates decent links . So build links with the intent to generate some visibility, traction and traffic and if the content is good organic links should naturally follow .
Content and links in this game are kinda like Batman and Robin , pretty good on their own but awesome together.
Definitely link to relevant content from your blog posts . Relevant links pass juice be they external or internal .
As far as blog posts being cut and dry , write more and try different slants, market with panache . Lawyers get paid by the minute to offer their thoughts and your readers should be lucky to be served this free.
Hope this helps ..

Hi
Acquiring links requires the marriage (no pun intended) of creating great content AND pro-actively going after links in an ethical way. And actually, it can even be that the need for a link for a certain topic can inspire you to create a particular blog post, for the sake of getting that link.
So yes, a blog is a great place to start, because you're creating fresh content, and hopefully if its good enough people will naturally want to share it.
One tip (I think I was able to find your site). You have a Facebook share button on your blog posts but not a Twitter button. I'd HIGHLY recommend adding one, since getting your site tweeted is crucial to sharing as well.

Forgot your second question: Your menu at the top supplies the link to the homepage. Put internal links where it makes sense from a user standpoint, and just use natural looking anchor text, with exact or partial keyword match. But don't go overboard, you don't want it to look spammy.

Been offered a no follow link on a blog post ?. Is it worth it ?
Hi All, We are having a go at doing our own link building and just wanted some advice on a couple of questions I've found some industry related blog sites which could be good but alot of them only offer a no follow link ?. Is this worth it ? And if ,so what is the advantage of having a no follow link ? as it won't directly help with our DA etc ? I've also noticed some of these sites link to each other or recommend each other (i.e other blog sites) which may be some sort of link network ?.. I take it this is bad ? and could be penalized by google ? thanks pete

Frequency of Manual Link Building Monitoring
Hey Moz! We're in the middle of performing a link remediation campaign, and had a question regarding new links. We do not acquire any links through methods that break Google's guidelines, but we recently discovered a suspicious link to our website that happened organically. What is the recommended frequency for manually checking all newly discovered links to our website in order to catch/remove toxic links? Monthly? Bi-monthly? Yearly? Thanks in advance!

Creating your own blog for back linking to your site
Our competitor seems to be linked to a blog that they have created themselves. From an SEO perspective is it worthwhile creating a blog that is related to your particular industry and then only including links back to your site. Also is there any way to upload ,articles etc automatically to the blog to cut down on the people hours involved in updating content?
