Is it even worth getting a link from PR0-2 , unrelated themed sites like http://www.area-rug-news.com/ or http://www.denvercohomerentals.com/ to my PR4 health training site that has been around since 2007? Can getting a sitewide blogroll link do more harm than good?

More importantly, you want a healthy ratio of Followed and No Followed links. If all of your links are followed, it will look like it was done on purpose.
Look at your competition and see how many of their links are followed, vs. not followed, and try to keep a somewhat similar ratio.
No Follow links are a natural part of the Internet, so if you focus your SEO on ONLY building Followed Links, you're going to be doing great Link Building, but overall horrible SEO, because your profile will look manipulated.
No Follow Happens. Embrace it.

Of course! I'm actually hoping you are correct and by cleaning out the trash I'll move up 1-2 spots on some of the keywords.I just don't see how see how those remaining links are going to support my current rankings.
Are you happy with the rankings you have using your current techniques? Do you have any to share?
-
That should be an interesting test. I hope you can share the results with us here or on YouMoz, if you're comfortable with that.

No offense, but I'm actually starting to second guess these answers a bit. Using the answers provided I looked at one of my domains and the links coming in. 90% of it's links are from 20 sites linked together, under the same GA, on the same C block. They are trash domains with very little value and my links are site wide blogroll links. The rest of my links are just a dmoz, squidoo, ezine and hubpages.
Yet my site has been ranked #1/#3/#4 for 3 semi-competitive keywords (2 million competing) for more than 5 years and does well.
I'm going to run a test and remove the trash links to see what happens. My gut instinct is that google values more volume of links/domains than neighborhoods but we'll see.
-
Wow, it's almost worth setting up different identities for each domain if you're even linking relevant sites for legitimate reasons?

A comment about the spyonweb site. It's to be taken as a signal, but not gospel truth. At one point, there was some common factor relating all of those sites together, but it may not be the case now. On one of my old sites, I also see other sites with the same beginning string in GA. I haven't worked on those sites in five years and don't have access to them or the GA code anymore, though at one point I did.

No. I wouldn't trust the toolbar page rank, or figure Google would catch up with them soon enough and devalue those links. The rug site especially shows no signs that it was made by humans or for humans. That site has over 20,000 non-unique articles that are generated by a keyword search. This post from today http://www.area-rug-news.com/2011/09/25/what-is-the-best-way-in-carpet-cleaning/ turns up a couple of thousand similar results in google.
The home rental site shares a Google Analytics account code with a porn site, and with several of the sites its linking too. Google can tell all of that real easy (see http://spyonweb.com/denvercohomerentals.com).
I would not go for the link.
-
That way you get link, but not getting any penalty. People who visit that site can click and visit you.
-
Would you feel different if one were a PR/MR of 6 - even if it had the same content?
-
For those two sites? I would pass. Take a look at this page on the Denver Home Rentals site. It's for House, Season Four. http://www.denvercohomerentals.com/denver-rental-property/house-m-d-season-four. If you were Google, would you trust a site like this? Would you think it should pass good karma and link juice to you? It looks like a lot of stuff generated based off of keywords trying to get affiliate sales, and hardly seems relevant to even itself, much less a health training site.
Both of those sites have the same off-topic sitewide links. I wouldn't want my site grouped with that type of neighborhood, personally.
Not all sitewide links are bad, but I'd not opt to have my site on any sites in that network.
-
Why would I want a nofollowed link?
-
I would suggest that you focus your link building on related sites. You can otherwise request to get the link, but with a nofollow to your site.

What qualities to look for when trying to find sites to get backlinks from?
When trying to build backlinks, of course some sites are much harder to get links on than others. I am trying to figure out which sites my time and effort is best spent trying to get a link on. I may view a site as important and high quality but Google may not. Which tools and metrics within MOZ should I look at to determine if a site is worth the effort to get a backlink from? I'm sure "Domain Authority" is a factor. Which number makes it definitely worth pursuing?

What you think is thje best way to build links for my site?
I heard different opinions all over the web, some people said don't do 100% just anchor texts with the keywords you want to rank with, and they suggest 60% brand anchor text and the rest for the keywords i want to rank for. what do you guys suggest?

What to do when you get an oh so sweet but temporary link?
Hello! We recently received a great link from a local university. My colleague did a few presentations at the university, so they were nice enough to turn a mention of our company name on their academics page into a link when we asked. The problem is that we've been told that the mention/link will disappear after about a month. So, my questions: Can we do anything to further exploit that link in the short time we have? My colleague brought up doing some kind of funky link pyramid thing where we create links to that page, which would possibly give us even more link juice. I know nothing about this sort of thing. Is it recommended/not recommended? Is there anything we could possibly do to preserve the link in Google's index and have it still count in our favor after it's taken down? Maybe some kind of crazy iframe magic trick? Thanks!!

Interesting link to a competitors site
I recently found a very interesting link to two of my competitors sites. The companies are number 2 and 3 in Google for my targeted keywords (for some reason Wikipedia is number 1) and are both linked from the home page of this site. I don't want to leave a link for linkers site because I don't want them to be able to see that I'm snooping on them but, here is the scenerio: The site that they are linked from is a .org site. It is basically our targeted keywords in a .org. Something like bluewidgets.org. At the very bottom of the home page are some tabs, you click the first tab and it opens about 20 new tabs, when you click any of those 20 tabs it displays some text at the bottom of the page. This text is of no value to visitors, it is obvious to me what is happening here. Both companies are linked with targeted keywords in the anchor and title text. I'm wondering if I should also pursue a link from this page. I know there is value in a .org link but this site seems to be built to link to those two sites. Anybody else ever run into anything like I'm describing. Should I post a link to this site?

Link Building: Asking for links versus building links
I am currently delving into link building for SEO having started out from a social media marketing side. From that angle, it was always my belief building high quality links came from engaging targeted bloggers and sites in my market and related verticals for product reviews and/or providing expert advise and opinion for posts they are creating. As I am learning more the "technical" side of SEO, I've read a lot of posters on here talk about asking from links from websites. While I get the concept from a strategic stand point, are links really asking for or is better to continue to pursue the long term investment of pitching to get coverage from well known bloggers and sites?

Is there way to identify all back links throughout a site or do I have to check one site page at a time? Thanks!
Sorry if it is obvious, but I can't seem to figure it out. I'd like to be able to run a report that will list all of the back links on every page of my site.

Links from low PA pages on high DA sites... What effect do they have?
My company's website has inbound links from very high DA websites (LinkedIn 96, Yelp 91, etc.) but from pages with very low PA (1). These low PA pages are the company listings pages. In the case of Linked In, there are several products/services listed with ideal anchor text to the relevant pages on our site. How do these links effect our overall ranking and trust, and why aren't they listed when I use OSE to analyze my pages? Thanks!

Value of a link from very large profile site
Hello We have an opportunity to get a link from a very large traffic site. It comes with a price tag, and Im wondering if it is worth it. Is it ok to mention the page and cost? It is the 5th largest internet site. Would be on their benefactors page. There are many other sites linking from the page, and its obvious they are on there for the link value. I know sometimes one link can do wonders for rankings, where thousands of others can not. But wondering if there is any way to quanitfy this. Is it worth it for the value of the backlink? If we link to the home page, the link juice (alot I hope) would pass through to the deeper pages, and increase their rankings for their target keywords? Thanks for your advise. Sam
