A Simple(ish) Q&A Improvement
-
Hey Roger,
In the posting etiquette it states that users should 'find out if someone has already posted your question before adding it' but we all know that is never really going to happen.
So, we tend to see the same questions asked again and again when there are already top class answers in the Q&A.
So, could you not implement some kind of suggested answer system? So, user posts a question, you analyse it, list potential answers that may provide the answer based on the content of the question itself. If nothing matches, the user can then go on to post the question but in many cases, they would get a top notch answer instantly.
I have seen this on other sites and it would certainly cut down on the amount of duplicated questions and the suggested answers could all be hand picked to some extent (good answers, lots of thumbs up etc).
So, the Q&A would have less duplication and users would get directed to the best possible answers for a given question in a shorter time frame. Good for those that do the answering, good for the people who have questions - everyone is happy.
Just a thought, my tuppence, 5 cents, etc.

My pleasure.
I think it will really benefit the whole Q&A experience. The good guys like EGOL, Ryan and Alan that are answering all the time can focus on creating really strong answers for unique questions and the users looking for answers get visibility of the existing strong answers straight away.
EGOL's point above was valid as well. The search for the Q&A itself is a bit weak and it could do with looking at other factors along with some weighting for good answers. The metrics to apply this weighting like the staff endorsements, good answer and thumbs are all there to make this possible, just needs a bit of back end wizadry.
Cheers

I hear ya! I'll make sure our product manager takes a look at this as well. Thanks for the input!

Hi Marcus! This is a really great idea. We've actually passed this thread onto our Q&A product manager so we can get it in the queue. It will take a bit of work but it would be really beneficial to the community. Thanks for the idea!

I really like this idea.
I know of a few questions that I have answered with very detailed information and references - and even received staff endorsement. Then when the same question is asked again and again and I am not motivated to keep rewriting the entire epistle... and have difficulty finding it with the search.
I think that search could be improved by placing a badge beside answers that have SEOmoz staff endorsements or a green check beside answers that have been rated "good answer" by the author.
Really... just being honest... I think that the search used for Q&A is not very good. If we want to locate to a great answer by Alan Bleiweiss or RyanKent the search ignores the author... so searching for a great answer about "panda recovery bleiweiss" will not return all of the great answers that Alan has given.
Try it... if you search using author name and topic it will return nothing. Try "egol content" or "egol pdf"... you will find nothing and I have written about them many times. So, I go up to the google tool bar and query "site:seomoz.org egol pdf" to locate content on SEOmoz.
This forum is populated with searchers. We need a better search to unleash the deep value of the content that is being written.
Suggestion... Just use Google search. We all know that it works superbly.

I agree, I think this would be a great feature.

Its a great idea. It would also essentially build up a knowledge base within the Q&A for people to get instant answers from too.

Is BigCommerce a good CMS for Improving Search Visibility for our E-Commerce Business?
We have recently moved from Wordpress to BigCommerce and have noticed a decline in our Search Visibility score on MOZ. Following the recommendations of IT consultants, we were under the impression that moving to BigCommerce would significantly improve our Search Visibility. We were wondering if there is anyone out there who is currently using or have used BigCommerce and had similar issues? Any personal reviews/recommendations would be much appreciated! 🙂 Thanks!

Losing Rankings & Need Help
Hi Guys, I am not sure if anyone else is suffering from the July 4, 2013 update. I know many of us are awaiting to see what happens once the dust settles. I have a couple of issues/questions/statements below. This is the first time any Google update has every affected me negatively and I'd love some ideas or input. 1. I have ranked quite well for nearly 10 years for all my top keywords. Now, after this update, I am disappearing for my top keywords in the SERPS - definitely getting pushed to page two, etc. Can anyone help me discover the reasons? I have a great SEO expert helping me and I know quite a bit, but this has me baffled. My website is Journey Beyond Travel.com I have read MOZ's ranking factors for 2013 and also the recently published report from SearchMetrics. In the last few days, I've added more quality text to the homepage and shortened my page title on the homepage (although Google has been changing my homepage browser title to put my brand name first in the title - and they haven't for my competitors). Over the past few months, I've really cleaned up my link profile to the best of my ability. I've never really taken part in any negative or black-hat practices. I am trying to get more links that use my 'brand' name rather than exact anchor text. I believe I have a natural profile - any thoughts? 2. One thing I notice is the higher ranking of larger brands now (at least in my field). Just because a domain with higher authority creates one page of content, how can that outrank me? I mean, I've got ten years and 600+ darn good articles of content on my website. How can one domain that is very 'general' (for example, well known in the world of travel and not specialized or niche like mine) outrank me? How can it be that Google allows larger brands to outrank smaller ones just because they have more backlinks and domain authority, but no real content to support these pages? Is content truly king? I am thinking about an article: "Google, Brands, and the Death of Small Business Online." Anyone wish to collaborate here? I am not being hatelful or resentful, but I foresee the day when an 'alternative' search engine emerges, doesn't allow crap ads, allows users more flexibility, and brings search to the next level. Not all of us want the big brands and are searching for alternatives that stand out. I ignore them when I am searching mostly. Any thoughts or elaborations? Thanks!

Difference in MozPoints between My Account and Q&A forum
I noticed that there is a big difference between the mozpoints showing in my account and the mozpoint showing in the Q&A section of the website. My Account shows me that I now have: 262 Mozpoints. When i look at my Q&A total is says: 303 mozpoints. There is a big hole between the two. How is this possible and which of the 2 numbers is correct?

Www, non www, 301 redirects, Google webmaster tools & SeomozPro
arg! Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated! This is in regards to sheffieldfurniture .com In October of 2011 I had our host set up a redirect for our site so all non www requests would be redirected to the www version and it works great (so it seems at least) Recently I signed up for SEOMOZPRO and when I started trying to track my organic results for various keywords I realized that Google has my site indexed in the non www format. Is this a problem? I’ve read you can tell google what your preferred domain is in Google Webmaster Tools, is that what I should be doing? Are there any negatives to doing that? I’m just confused as to why Google hasn’t noticed or acknowledged the redirect in 4 months. It makes me wonder if something isn’t working properly? I have since added a second SEOMOZPRO campaign with the non www version but I’m worried about having historical tracking issues if I then tell google to use the www version…

SEO Industry Contracts, Resumes, & Jobs
We're in the process of looking to hire link builders & content managers in the Chicago area. While I know it's not a "core function" of SEOmoz, the SEO Industry Jobs section has been very helpful to us. Unfortunately, it's not easily searchable/filterable by geography. I think the Moz resume & job-board could be a lot more helpful with some updates, including filter by geography. Anyone else have any suggestions?
