Multiple doamin with same content?
-
I have multiple websites with same content such as
http://www.example.org and so on. My primary url is http://www.infoniagara.com and I also placed a 301 on .org.
Is that enough to keep away my exampl.org site from indexing on google and other search engines?
the eaxmple.org also has lots of link to my old html pages (now removed). Should i change that links too? or will 301 redirection solve all such issues (page not found/crawl error) of my old webpages?
i would welcome good seo practices regarding maintaining multiple domains
thanks and regards

You want your redirect rules on the server, not client site. In Apache you can do this with mod_write and the .htaccess file like so.
To add the www
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]To remove the www:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.(.+)$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://%1/$1 [R=301,L]In IIS they have a rewrite command too. I've not used it myself but this should help: http://www.petermoss.com/post/How-to-redirect-non-www-domain-to-www-domain-requests-in-IIS-7.aspx

Anyway I am lucky being with a group of average team mates.
-
I would recommend either asking a new Q&A as to how an IIS redirect works, or checking Google. I lack experience working in that environment. I was spoiled by working with a very talented team who had performed all those changes and I never needed to learn any aspects of IIS.

Hi,
Thanks. As you said i was checking server side redirection. My site server is II7. I tried to make a server side rediretion but couldn't. I found a java script redirection and created a redirection. See the page; http://www.infoniagara.com/d-bed-roses.html
I think this too is not a correct redirection, is it?
thanks

Ohh thanks so much Ryan. Let me learn the server side redirection and other aspects related to it.
Thanks once again for your consideration and time. I hope I can approach you in future too.

The javascript code you shared is not a proper redirect.
A proper redirect happens on the server. Instead of loading the original target page, the server instead will load the redirect page instantly along with a header response code of 301 which tells search engines the content has moved to a new URL.
If you use javascript in the manner you shared, the original page will load with a 200 "all ok" header code, and then 3 seconds later the javascript will trigger and load the new page with a 200 header code. All the backlinks will still be applied to the original page and not the redirected page.
The exact method of performing a redirect varies based on your server setup. If you have a LAMP server with cPanel, there is a Redirect tool which you can use.

hi,
It's really helpful and now I understand it.
I know that you are one of the true masters of SEO and I think you can clarify one more doubt. It is also regarding the issue of redirection. I want to know that a script i use for redirectining old pages to newpages is right or not?
This script is working properly and I want to know that what type of redirection is this and is it a proper redirection to get the backlink juice? (I add this script to the body just after the
header.)
thanks in advance

A 301 redirect is the proper solution and superior to the canonical. It is fine to have the canonical too, but add the redirect.
When you ask "should I do it for each page", understand a single redirect can forward all non-www traffic on your site to it's www equivalent. If you are unsure how to perform the redirect, simply ask your host. Most sites are on managed hosting and it is a very common and easy request.
-
hi dear Ryan,
thanks so much for your time and valuable suggestions. As you said, i am aware of this problem and therefore i added a canonical url to the homepage. should i make a 301 from non-www to www url? should i do it for each page?
thanks & regards

In short, you should not use duplicate content across various domains. Doing such will likely negatively affect rankings for either site. Try doing a search that would naturally return the results for a duplicated web page. You will likely find one page ranks well, while the other page ranks significantly lower due to the duplication.
I checked your .org site and it's pages are properly 301 redirected to the .com site. This change would cause any valid pages listed on the .org site to disappear from Google's index. It may take a month from the date the 301 was implemented for Google to crawl and update the entire site.
One point I would add is I suggest you perform a Google site:http://www.infoniagara.org search. Notice you do have a lot of search results for the .org site still present. Those pages are properly redirected to the .org site but they receive 404 errors. If the pages are really gone and there is no equivalent, that is fine and these results should disappear from Google's index over time. If there are similar pages on your site, you should 301 redirect these pages to them.
Another issue, your .com site appears in both the www and non-www form. If you take a URL, remove the "www" then the page appears normally showing the non-www URL. This is a problem which needs to be fixed as it is dividing your backlink juice. Pick one version of your URL, the www or non-www version, and 301 the other version.

What would be the best course of action to nullify negative effects of our website's content being duplicated (Negative SEO)
Hello, everyone About 3 months ago I joined a company that deals in manufacturing of transportation and packaging items. Once I started digging into the website, I noticed that a lot of their content was "plagiarized". I use quotes as it really was not, but they seemed to have been hit with a negative SEO campaign last year where their content was taken and being posted across at least 15 different websites. Literally every page on their website had the same problem - and some content was even company specific (going as far as using the company's very unique name). In all my years of working in SEO and marketing I have never seen something at the scale of this. Sure, there are always spammy links here and there, but this seems very deliberate. In fact, some of the duplicate content was posted on legitimate websites that may have been hacked/compromised (some examples include charity websites. I am wondering if there is anything that I can do besides contacting the webmasters of these websites and nicely asking for a removal of the content? Or does this duplicate content not hold as much weight anymore as it used to. Especially since our content was posted years before the duplicate content started popping up. Thanks,

How to re-rank an established website with new content
I can't help but feel this is a somewhat untapped resource with a distinct lack of information.
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | ChimplyWebGroup
There is a massive amount of information around on how to rank a new website, or techniques in order to increase SEO effectiveness, but to rank a whole new set of pages or indeed to 're-build' a site that may have suffered an algorithmic penalty is a harder nut to crack in terms of information and resources. To start I'll provide my situation; SuperTED is an entertainment directory SEO project.
It seems likely we may have suffered an algorithmic penalty at some point around Penguin 2.0 (May 22nd) as traffic dropped steadily since then, but wasn't too aggressive really. Then to coincide with the newest Panda 27 (According to Moz) in late September this year we decided it was time to re-assess tactics to keep in line with Google's guidelines over the two years. We've slowly built a natural link-profile over this time but it's likely thin content was also an issue. So beginning of September up to end of October we took these steps; Contacted webmasters (and unfortunately there was some 'paid' link-building before I arrived) to remove links 'Disavowed' the rest of the unnatural links that we couldn't have removed manually. Worked on pagespeed as per Google guidelines until we received high-scores in the majority of 'speed testing' tools (e.g WebPageTest) Redesigned the entire site with speed, simplicity and accessibility in mind. Htaccessed 'fancy' URLs to remove file extensions and simplify the link structure. Completely removed two or three pages that were quite clearly just trying to 'trick' Google. Think a large page of links that simply said 'Entertainers in London', 'Entertainers in Scotland', etc. 404'ed, asked for URL removal via WMT, thinking of 410'ing? Added new content and pages that seem to follow Google's guidelines as far as I can tell, e.g;
Main Category Page Sub-category Pages Started to build new links to our now 'content-driven' pages naturally by asking our members to link to us via their personal profiles. We offered a reward system internally for this so we've seen a fairly good turnout. Many other 'possible' ranking factors; such as adding Schema data, optimising for mobile devices as best we can, added a blog and began to blog original content, utilise and expand our social media reach, custom 404 pages, removed duplicate content, utilised Moz and much more. It's been a fairly exhaustive process but we were happy to do so to be within Google guidelines. Unfortunately, some of those link-wheel pages mentioned previously were the only pages driving organic traffic, so once we were rid of these traffic has dropped to not even 10% of what it was previously. Equally with the changes (htaccess) to the link structure and the creation of brand new pages, we've lost many of the pages that previously held Page Authority.
We've 301'ed those pages that have been 'replaced' with much better content and a different URL structure - http://www.superted.com/profiles.php/bands-musicians/wedding-bands to simply http://www.superted.com/profiles.php/wedding-bands, for example. Therefore, with the loss of the 'spammy' pages and the creation of brand new 'content-driven' pages, we've probably lost up to 75% of the old website, including those that were driving any traffic at all (even with potential thin-content algorithmic penalties). Because of the loss of entire pages, the changes of URLs and the rest discussed above, it's likely the site looks very new and probably very updated in a short period of time. What I need to work out is a campaign to drive traffic to the 'new' site.
We're naturally building links through our own customerbase, so they will likely be seen as quality, natural link-building.
Perhaps the sudden occurrence of a large amount of 404's and 'lost' pages are affecting us?
Perhaps we're yet to really be indexed properly, but it has been almost a month since most of the changes are made and we'd often be re-indexed 3 or 4 times a week previous to the changes.
Our events page is the only one without the new design left to update, could this be affecting us? It potentially may look like two sites in one.
Perhaps we need to wait until the next Google 'link' update to feel the benefits of our link audit.
Perhaps simply getting rid of many of the 'spammy' links has done us no favours - I should point out we've never been issued with a manual penalty. Was I perhaps too hasty in following the rules? Would appreciate some professional opinion or from anyone who may have experience with a similar process before. It does seem fairly odd that following guidelines and general white-hat SEO advice could cripple a domain, especially one with age (10 years+ the domain has been established) and relatively good domain authority within the industry. Many, many thanks in advance. Ryan.0 -
1 business targetting multiple local locations
When researching a new client - I just came across a site in the same field which is ranking really well for all the local towns/cities/villages in the area. Each page for each town is a duplicate only changing out the town name (which appears 13 times on the page) - all pics and videos are the same. His url structure is along the lines of: budget-business-domain.com/budget-business-area/budget-business-town/ The domain was registered in 2012 - all backlinks are internal - anchor text is the same. I think it shouldn't be working.... but it is 😞 Why is this working?

Does posting a source to the original content avoid duplicate content risk?
A site I work with allows registered user to post blog posts (longer articles). Often, the blog posts have been published earlier on the writer's own blog. Is posting a link to the original source a sufficient preventative solution to possibly getting dinged for duplicate content? Thanks!

How to Not Scrap Content, but still Being a Hub
Hello Seomoz members. I'm relatively new to SEO, so please forgive me if my questions are a little basic. One of the sites I manage is GoldSilver.com. We sell gold and silver coins and bars, but we also have a very important news aspect to our site. For about 2-3 years now we have been a major hub as a gold and silver news aggregator. At 1.5 years ago (before we knew much about SEO), we switched from linking to the original news site to scraping their content and putting it on our site. The chief reason for this was users would click outbound to read an article, see an ad for a competitor, then buy elsewhere. We were trying to avoid this (a relatively stupid decision with hindsight). We have realized that the Search Engines are penalizing us, which I don't blame them for, for having this scraped content on our site. So I'm trying to figure out how to move forward from here. We would like to remain a hub for news related to Gold and Silver and not be penalized by SEs, but we also need to sell bullion and would like to avoid loosing clients to competitors through ads on the news articles. One of the solutions we are thinking about is perhaps using an iFrame to display the original url, but within our experience. An example is how trap.it does this (see attached picture). This way we can still control the experience some what, but are still remaining a hub. Thoughts? Thank you, nick 3dLVv

IP-Based Content on Homepage?
We're looking to redesign one of our niche business directory websites and we'd like to place local content on the homepage catered to the user based on IP. For instance, someone from Los Angeles would see local business recommendations in their area. Pretty much a majority of the page would be this kind of content. Is this considered cloaking or in any way a bad idea for SEO? Here are some examples of what we're thinking: http://www.yellowbook.com http://www.yellowpages.com/ I've seen some sites redirect to a local version of the page, but I'm a little worried Google will index us with localized content and the homepage would not rank for any worthwhile keywords. What's the best way to handle this? Thanks.
