Measurement of Link Value
-
Over the past few months I have encountered webmasters who claim to be using instruments far better than open site explorer but they will not disclose what they are. Are there better ways of determining the value of a link than OSE? Is "link juice" more important than page/domain authority where the link resides? Or vice-vesa. Any help understanding this would be appreciated. I do not want to offend other webmasters but I also do not want to be fooled by them either while negotiating a link exchange with them

thanks very much Ryan - Brett

Arguably the best tool presently available for checking links is Yahoo site explorer. OSE is very good and there are several other tools as well. There is not any tool I am aware of which is "far better" then OSE. At best, a different tool may be superior in one aspect of analysis. If anyone has a differing opinion I would love to hear it!
With respect to link value, there are numerous considerations:
-
What is the DA of the site
-
What is the PA / PR of the page?
-
How many links are on the page?
-
Where is your link on the page? Is it in content or in a footer?
-
What anchor text is used? Do you have solid anchor text such as "great website design"? Or is it a simple url link?
-
How likely is it that more links will be added to the page?
There are other considerations as well but the above are the top ones. Mik's suggestion of checking the cache refresh is excellent. It offers a view into the importance / PR of the page. There are so many other possible considerations such as if Google determines the link is paid, they will devalue the link. If the linking site is on the same C-block as your site, the link would also be devalued.

thanks very much Mik. Any thoughts on the issue of link juice which is often brought up by webmasters that I deal with?

Brett,
The authority sites are visited several times a day but for the most part I would not see a problem with a site that gets a visit weekly but if it is more than a month I would put less value on that link if that is the only valuation metric I am looking at.

Is there some threshold that is relevant such as every few days? less than a week? thanks

A good metric to check is how recent the cached version is. The higher frequency of the bot visits is a good indicator of value. Hope this helps

When domain a buys domain b (whose links direct to c), does domain a has links redirecting to domain c ?
Hi, I really need to know what happens when a company or domain (a) acquires another company with domain (b) with its links pointing to yet another location (c). Does company a then have redirects to c?

Footer no follow links
Just interested to know when putting links at the foot of the site some people use no-follow tags. I'm thinking about internal pages and social networks. Is this still necessary or is it an old-fashioned idea?

Breadcrumbs and internal links
Hello, I use to move up my site structure with links in content. I have now installed breadcrumbs, is it is useful to still keep the links in content or isn't there a need to duplicate those links ? and are the breadcrumbs links enough. Thank you,

Too many on page links
Hi I know previously it was recommended to stick to under 100 links on the page, but I've run a crawl and mine are over this now with 130+ How important is this now? I've read a few articles to say it's not as crucial as before. Thanks!

Links Questions and advice?
I have a website which has a fair few link assets that are doing very well (a lot of really powerful sites have link to them with follow links) but my commercial pages are not doing as well as a lot of sites without any other investment than (mediocre) links direct to there commercial pages with at least 10% of them carrying the money anchor text. Even pages we have had a few links for with generalized real anchor text and reasonable links do not do as well as the above due to none of them carrying the money keyword? Is it me or does google still rely on links to the commercial page and keywords with anchor text to match the money term?

PR links
Its seems that at lot of or competitors are using PR site to place articles with links. They are using the same article across many sites with the same anchor text link - But they seem to be doing very well in the rankings.... I have steered away from this type of linking as I assumed Google wouldn't be keen on this type of activity but I seem to be wrong.... Any views on this?

Sitewide footer links - bad or not?
Hi, Sitewide footer links, is this bad for SEO? Basically I see all the time the main navigation repeated in the footer, sometimes as almost something to just fill the footer up. Is this bad for SEO (im guessing it is) and can you explain why you think it is? Cheers

Removing Canonical Links
We implemented rel=canonical as we decided to paginate our pages. We then ran some testing and on the whole pagination did not work out so we removed all on-page pagination. Now, internally when I click for example a link for Widgets I get the /widgets.php but searching through Google I get to /widgets.php?page=all . There are not redirects in place at the moment. The '?page=all' page has been rated 'A' by the SEOmoz tool under On Page Optimization reports and performs much better than the exact same page without the '?page=all' (the score dips to a 'D' grade) so need to tread carefully so we don't lose the link value. Can anyone advise us on the best way forward? Thanks in advance.
