Are Facebook links really helpful?
-
If they are no follow, how can I benefit? If Google isn't using this data, than why would we bother to LIKE anyone or anybody?
-
Great! thanks for all the info! I guess my mentality needs a shift. I get so focused on what google wants rather than the user. I will start my day from that mind set today.
thanks

Facebook Likes play a significant role in Bing search due to Facebook's partnership with Bing. When you use Bing and are logged into Facebook you see when your friends have Liked something in the search results which can strongly influence click through rate.

The value of anchor text varies as does the value of any link. With respect to a link which is crawlable by search engines, the anchor text helps associate the keyword with your webpage. Whether a link is crawlable on facebook varies based on privacy settings. Try logging out of facebook and then visiting the facebook URL which contains the link to your site. If you can see the link, so can search engines. In that case, the value of the anchor text can be applied in any algorithms.
On the other hand, if a link is not crawlable, anchor text can still have value for readers. Consider reading these two recommendations:
I was recently in Las Vegas and it was a fantastic trip! I had many memorable experiences including a chance to dine at my favorite Italian restaurant!
Next consider,
I was recently in Las Vegas and it was a fantastic trip! I had many memorable experiences including a chance to dine at my favorite Italian restaurant: http://www.mirage.com/restaurants/onda-ristorante.aspx
Both methods work, but the first appropriately uses anchor text and may arouse curiosity. What is the name of his favorite Italian restaurant? Whereas the second link is presented without the anchor text and you know the name is "Onda Ristorante".
My suggestion is Google and other search engines reward anchor text because it offers real value. Many of the things we do "because Google says so" is actually backwards. Google encourages site owners to adopt behaviors which Google has learned offers the highest value to consumers. Often site owners disagree, but Google has invested millions and billions into learning what consumers want, and they design their systems accordingly.
With respect to Bounce Rate, no one knows exactly how that metric is used in Google's algorithms. When a visitors clicks on a Google search result and visits your site, Google has a perfect picture of the bounce rate and likely considers it as a factor in determining ranking. If a visitor enters your site from facebook, Google still has a considerable amount of data if you use GA on your site. Google can also gather data from your Google Chrome browser, your Google WiFi network, etc. That data could be used to measure bounce rate as well, but again it is unclear how the process works exactly and what amount of weight is applied to bounce rate in the overall rankings.
My best recommendation is stop trying to figure out what Google wants but instead focus on what your user's want. You will be a step ahead of the game with this approach.

thanks, with that said! It would be fair to say that "anchor text" in a FB link really doesn't matter. What matters is the quality of the traffic to "XYZ.com". Then if the bounce is 99%, I would not see an bump in rank...OR bounce rate wouldn't apply here?

Studies show information shared in social networks is valued by friends and others in the sharer's network. Whether you are sharing your experience about a cool new device, a restaurant or a great tax preparer, your friends and others in your network are likely to consider your personal share much higher then most other sources of information.
The REAL value is any link is not whether Google will see the link and give your site a 0.01 bump in rankings for the relevant search term. Instead the true value of a quality link is the direct, quality traffic your site would receive from the link.
Put the needs and wants of your site visitor's above all else. Then determine how you can benefit them and earn a profit from doing such. This business model is what makes Google so successful, and if you follow that model your company can climb to greatness as well. [If you are an anti-Google person, you probably don't love this analogy but you cannot argue Google is the most dominate player in their market].

Hello, I am currently designing the webpages of my website and I am wondering if I should link externally or if it going to hurt me ? I am in the travel industry and for example in the France in the Loire valley, I want to list hotels that people can stay at in pre and pods trip. Is it ok to link to maybe 10 of those hotels websites or can it hurt me ? Thank you,

Lower quality new domain link vs higher quality repeat domain link
First time poster here with a dilemma that head scratching and spreadsheets can't solve! I'm trying to work out whether to focus on getting links from new domains or to nurture relationships with the bigger sites in our business and get more links. Of the two links below which does the community here think would be more valuable a signal to Google? Both would be links from within relevant text/post copy. Link 1. Site DA 30. No links currently from this domain. Link 2. Site DA 60. Many links over last 12 months already from this domain. I suspect link 1 but given the enormous disparity in ranking power am I correct?! Thanks for any considered opinions out there! Matthew

Removing Bad Links
Hi all, I am in the process of conducting a Link Audit and I am faced with quite a lot of seemingly poor quality examples, such as; http://gotogetaways.com/tag/cunard/ http://jobhiringlocalandabroad.blogspot.com/p/job-hiring-for-cruise-liner-orchestra.html http://lumukixu.xlx.pl/p-o-cruises-aurora.php To me these should be removed \ disavowed but I am getting a little resistence from stakeholders regarding the amount of links I am seeking to rid ourselves of - all are of a similar quality to my examples above... Just so that I know that I am not being 'over eager' with my audit, I welcome your opinions Thanks Andy

Google WMT Turning 1 Link into 4,000+ Links
We operate 2 ecommerce sites. The About Us page of our main site links to the homepage of our second site. It's been this way since the second site launched about 5 years ago. The sites sell completely different products and aren't related besides both being owned by us. In Webmaster Tools for site 2, it's picking up ~4,100 links coming to the home page from site 1. But we only link to the home page 1 time in the entire site and that's from the About Us page. I've used Screaming Frog, IT has looked at source, JavaScript, etc., and we're stumped. It doesn't look like WMT has a function to show you on what pages of a domain it finds the links and we're not seeing anything by checking the site itself. Does anyone have experience with a situation like this? Anyone know an easy way to find exactly where Google sees these links coming from?

Internal Links not being Identified on OSE
Greetings Mozzers, When ever I check my home page on OSE it says I have a total of 5 internal links. Obviously this is WAY off. I've used all relative links, if I were to removed all relative and make them absolute, would there be a better chance of OSE identifying them instead of losing that juice? I think this is huge to resolve as when I compare my site to competitors, almost all factors are in our favor except this huge gap of only 5 internal links. I'm using Drupal CMS. For example, Drupal normally outputs internal links as "/about" and "/about/team" in the menus. If we changed it to "https://monsterweb.net/about", and "https://monsterweb.net/about/team", would that make a difference? Thanks for all the advice and clarification on this matter.

Where do I start with cleaning up our link profile?
We have just taken the steps to start building links to www.towelsrus.co.uk, I am concerned about the state of external links to the site created by previous companies, i.e are they OK, or doing us harm, could I get more out f whats already in place or should we focus purely on getting new links? We also have about 25 pages that have 302 errors and contain external links to the site. What should i do with these. try and get them re-directed to our site with appropriate anchor text or simply put a 301 re-direct in place? In essence where I start, We want to build and increase traffic in particular for towels, bathrobes, dressing gowns and bolster our position as our positions are fluctuating a little but steadier than they have been. Any help appreciated.

Help, really struggling with fixing mistakes post-Penguin
We had previously implemented a strategy of paying for lots of links and focusing on 3 or 4 keywords as our anchors, which used to REALLY work (I know, I know, bad black hat strategy - I have since learned my lesson). These keywords and others have since plummeted up to 100 spots since Panda 3.3 and Penguin. So I'm trying to go in and fix all our mistakes cuz our domain is too valuable to us just to start over from scratch. Yesterday I literally printed a 75 page document of all of our links according to Open Site Explorer. I have been going in and manually changing anchor text wherever I can, and taking down the very egregious links if possible. This has involved calling and emailing webmasters, digging up old accounts and passwords, and otherwise just trying to diversify our anchor text and remove bad links. I've also gone into our site and edited some internal links (also too weighty on certain keywords) and removed other links entirely. My rankings have gone DOWN more today. A lot. WTF does Google want? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Should we be deleted links from all private networks entirely or just trying to vary the anchor text? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks!
