What is the new Google SERP highlighting?
-
My question is with the new Google SERP. I posted a pic of it at http://www.hortonwebdesign.com/images/new-google-page.gif.
If you mouse over the arrows to the right of a result on the SERP, it pops up a preview of the page. On some results it also highlights a section of the page with a red box. What does this represent? Does it represent a key area that they are looking at in determining the positioning?
I have some clients that are asking me and it doesn't make a lot of sense. In my example above I searched for "seo expert in georgia" and on my result (I'm #2), it shows a preview, but the part it has chosen to highlight with a red box is just, um, ...useless. It's highlighting a Recent Post sidebar on the right halfway down the page. Surely this can't be what they're looking at as what they view as "useful" to that search. This simply can't be what they're using to determine positioning. Or is it?
Just please explain what I'm seeing here.

Hmm. Let me research, but that seems like a legitimate reasoning. The only crux of that answer is that why would a typical searcher (someone like my parents) give a poo about what Google has selected as relevant? Especially when in some cases it's as innocuous as ALT text behind an image? If it wanted to utilize that feature to show the searcher where on the page was the most relevant to what they searched for, so that maybe they would know where to look when they arrived on the page, it's doing a very poor job. I think we're viewing a feature that doesn't have the quirks worked out yet because there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason.

From what I can tell they are grabbing the smallest chunk of the page that contains the highest proportional use of the keyword. In some cases they can't get it all in one spot so the pull two separate highlights (check out hostgators preview on a "dedicated servers" search).
So a lot of the examples I see are a tagline or header that has the term. When it is a less naturally used phrase like "SEO expert in Georgia" then it will probably pull results like you are seeing. If you put a sentence closer to the top of the page that said something like "Your #1 SEO Expert in Georgia" with a sentence below it like "SEO experts in Georgia can be hard to find" I bet it would pull that out instead.

That's what I had originally thought. But that's not all there is to this. Even in your example for Hivelocity.net, it's showing the searcher (assumed) what it found on the page that was relevant to what they searched for. But by that logic, is it then saying that the text behind the image is more relevant to "dedicated servers" than anything else it could find in its database? This is where that assumption kind of falls apart. Especially since the area they're highlighting wouldn't even be visible to a typical user that never has even clicked to see source code before. The selections seem haphazard.
It's almost as if they're giving us insight into the algorithm and what it sees, but the value of what they're showing is bottom of the barrel. Even when "Dedicated servers" is in their title tag, header tags, etc., but it chose text behind an image? There's more to this...

The highlight is showing you where they found content on the page that matched your search query. This is handy for figuring out if the previewed site is actually talking about that you are looking for without going to the page.
This can lead to some interesting results because it highlights areas on the site where it finds the text even if it is behind an image because the designers are using image replacement, or perhaps the text shows up in a rotating banner, but doesn't come up in the screenshot.
For example do a search on "Dedicated Servers" and look at the preview for Hivelocity.net. You will see Google highlighted the middle of an image, but this is where they find the text in the site.

Google is a definition engine / Question answering engine
But what do you do to rank when you sell a product and people don't have questions and none of the companies that rank on your keywords answers questions... Let me give you a few example. Title tag for example : People want to know what is it and then have question about it What is the maximum number of characters ? How do you write a good one ? Etc... How to remove stains is another example : Please want to know how to remove all the different types of stains, (ketchup, grease etc..) But what about when you are a online business and want to sell usb keys , rent bicycles https://www.spinlister.com or even sell a software to do A/B testing on your website https://bit.ly/2a6cBuF Can someone explain me how those people mentioned rank without giving definition or answering questions... because according to me they don't do any of that on the pages that I mentioned. I look forward to your reply. Thank you,

Creating a new website, but I'd like to control it under a different domain.
I'd like to control it under the domain of another website with a higher DA. Can I create the new website (website A) and do an immediate re-direct to another website (website B)? Or would I be better at putting it as a subdomain? Such as www.websitea.websiteb.com? Cheers all, Rhys

Certain PHP Pages Not Showing In SERPs
Hi all, You've all been so helpful so far, I'm hoping you can help me with our trickiest SEO question yet. Last year we migrated 7 sites into one, going from flat html to Joomla. This went fine and although we saw a slight drop in traffic, it wasn't too bad. Now however traffic has started to drop and we've been able to hone it down into a certain area of our website. Each of the 7 sites had their own page with some php code that was fed products. These products were updated everyday and were are second most popular page on the sites aprt from the home page. These pages were found in Google no problem and were an essential resource for our site. What we have found is these pages cannot be found at all, unless you type the full business name and product. If you just type the product and the location our customer is based in, we're no where, using the Moz tools it says we're not in the top 50 results. This is a bit of a shock since we used to be at least on the first page, usually quite high up. I'm a little stumped as SEO wise these pages are technically better. They offer the same functionality but in a much more SEO friendly way. I've asked our developer to check: Nothing is being blocked in robots.txt

The pages are being indexed
There's no strange code errors Essentially the pages can't be found even if we type the full title, for example 'customer's products in their town' to be found we have to type 'customer's products in their town and their full business name'. The top third of the page is just html text, the bottom like I mentioned is PHP and is fed data from a database which is refreshed each morning. I know our developer did some rel conical work but has assured me that's all working fine. While I know it's a new website, we've owned the domain for a while so our domain authority isn't brand new and 0, we also have pages with worse page authority that show up on page 1 no problem, so I'm leaning towards something else might not be right. Can anyone help me figure out why these pages are being indexed but not even found? Thanks!0 -
How does Google look at strings added to a URL
For example: http://localhost:3000/en-US/app/a-knsmtrhqrqs/personal where knsmtrhqrqs is a string Can Google tell this is a string and what's their policy? Will it hurt rankings? Thank you.

What is the best way to point newly built website on new domain name to the original more well known domain?
Live website on abc.com domain is being totally redone and moved to a new platform. to facilitate full testing and compliance, the new look and content was built on a different url - xyz.com for example. Now that all content is approved and testing, we want people visiting the abc.com domain to see the xyz.com website without necessarily redirecting abc.com to xyz.com What is the best to do this? Thanks all

Any reaction to the announcement from Google that 'signed in' searches won't pass through search query info to analytics?
Seems like SEO is about to get that much harder: http://analytics.blogspot.com/2011/10/making-search-more-secure-accessing.html Any thoughts on this?

Does on page links have an effect on SERP rankings with PANDA
I have been doing some competitive analysis basing my company on others and have noticed a pattern. Very high ranking sites seem to have limited the internal and external on page links on their subdomains to under 100. my site has a lot of links but all are relevant and lead to unique content. I am interested to know if anyone else has noticed this pattern in changes in the SERP results. bIs google now penalizing pages with to many on site nav links? And if a full site restructure is needed to allow google to index and rank these pages or if a it is a non issue and does not need to be addressed. Panda confuses me!!!!! HELP!
