Removed Internal Rel=NoFollows from power internal page - how long till reflected in Google?
-
I just started with a client, who has an internal page (not the homepage) that gets about 70% of all total links to the site and ranks #1 for a highly competitive keyword.
For some reason, the first set of links, including the first anchor text link to the homepage are nofollowed. I removed the nofollows yesterday.
Today, The internal page has already been reindexed in Google showing the followed anchor text link to the homepage
Should I expect a jump in link juice pointing to my homepage immediately with a corresponding rankings boost? Homepage is #8 for target term.
I hope this makes sense. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
-
When I search Google.com for "Career Change" I see your home page as the # 9 result.
I would share if you change your title to "Career Change" it would be better for ranking purposes. This change alone may or many not make an immediate difference, but once your ranking stabilizes and you are sure no other factors are an influence you may wish to experiment.
The only reason to add other words to the title is if you felt it would help your Click Through Rate. Generally speaking I try to rank as high as possible first, then adjust for CTR. I would therefore remove the "Can we Help You" from your title.
-
In the last month, 8 - 10 links of varied anchor text. Roughly 100 pages on the site.
There was a followed link to the homepage on the powerful internal page as well as a nofollow. I removed nofollows and made the first link per html code an anchor text link to the homepage.
-
Ryan, if he built a large number of links in one month to the homepage could that effect his ranking as it might look unnatural?
Or the likely-hood of that happening is very unlikely?
-
If you believe the follow/nofollow change had any effect on your home page ranking feel free to change it back and see if your ranking is restored. I don't have any logical explanation for the result you experienced other then an outside factor influencing the result.
-
When you say obtained links in the last month, how many are we talking? and did you use the same anchor text link?
Are you sure when you unlocked the PR it defiantly did not have a route to the homepage before you did it? and roughly how many pages on the site? 100, 1000, 10,000.
-
Only changes I have made over the last month is written articles and obtained links from quality sites. I highly doubt it has to do with something else than this immediate change.
-
It wouldn't be related to your removing nofollow from an internal page. Look to other changes you made with your site over the past month.
-
Hi Ryan,
The homepage dropped from #8 to #16 -- why would that happen?
-
Thanks man. Hopefully the homepage gets reindexed soon. I will post results here in a week.
-
Assuming those PA metrics are valid (i.e. the links are authentic) then those page values are strong. I would expect them to be updated rather quickly. I know you desire a time frame for "quickly" so I will offer 1 day as an estimate.
-
So the internal page has a PA of 67 -- homepage 55.
Internal page has already been indexed, waiting on the homepage to be indexed.
Thanks for your insight
-
Thanks Activity -- The amount of links (and high quality) pointing to the internal page are so strong that I don't think it will drop?? I do want to give link juice to the homepage as its' keyword is more important. It will be interesting to see what happens; how Google handles internal links that were nofollowed for years -- how fast do they react??

Removed Internal Rel=NoFollows from power internal page - how long till reflected in Google?
Depending on the page's importance Google can update the page within less then an hour. The two questions i would have are:
-
what is the page's PR or PA?
-
does the page contain static content? or does the page's content change often?
Either way you can do a search for page in Google and check the cached page. At the top of the cached page is a date/time stamp. When the time stamp is updated you know Google has recrawled the page and had an opportunity to view the changed tags.
Parts of Google's ranking algorithm are a mystery. It may take recrawling both the home page and the internal page before Google updates the PR. I suggest checking the home page cache to see if it has been updated as well.
Once Google has crawled the changes, your pages should immediately benefit from the change. That benefit may or may not actually result in a ranking change. Generally speaking, I would not expect a ranking change because I acquired a single new link. It certainly can happen and depends entirely upon how your web pages compare with your competition.

Well the nofollow on the homepage link along with the others is to stop the link juice at that page, that's one of the reasons im guessing it ranks so well.
As you have allowed the links to follow and therefore the link juice, you might find some of the other pages rank a little better but the #1 page might drop but im not 100% sure so best see what others say as well.

Should remove 404 page
Hello, I upload a new website with new web addresses and my current addresses don't work anymore. I don't want to do redirects. Should I just remove the old address from google index using their tool or let google do it on its own. Thank you,

Product Pages not indexed by Google
We built a website for a jewelry company some years ago, and they've recently asked for a meeting and one of the points on the agenda will be why their products pages have not been indexed. Example: http://rocks.ie/details/Infinity-Ring/7170/ I've taken a look but I can't see anything obvious that is stopping pages like the above from being indexed. It has a an 'index, follow all' tag along with a canonical tag. Am I missing something obvious here or is there any clear reason why product pages are not being indexed at all by Google? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Update I was told 'that each of the product pages on the full site have corresponding page on mobile. They are referred to each other via cannonical / alternate tags...could be an angle as to why product pages are not being indexed.'

Removing content from Google's Indexes
Hello Mozers My client asked a very good question today. I didn't know the answer, hence this question. When you submit a 'Removing content for legal reasons report': https://support.google.com/legal/contact/lr_legalother?product=websearch will the person(s) owning the website containing this inflammatory content recieve any communication from Google? My clients have already had the offending URL removed by a court order which was sent to the offending company. However now the site has been relocated and the same content is glaring out at them (and their potential clients) with the title "Solicitors from Hell + Brand name" immediately under their SERPs entry. **I'm going to follow the advice of the forum and try to get the url removed via Googles report system as well as the reargard action of increasing my clients SERPs entries via Social + Content. ** However, I need to be able to firmly tell my clients the implications of submitting a report. They are worried that if they rock the boat this URL (with open access for reporting of complaints) will simply get more inflammatory)! By rocking the boat, I mean, Google informing the owners of this "Solicitors from Hell" site that they have been reported for "hosting defamatory" content. I'm hoping that Google wouldn't inform such a site, and that the only indicator would be an absence of visits. Is this the case or am I being too optimistic?

Why Does Ebay Allow Internal Search Result Pages to be Indexed?
Click this Google query: https://www.google.com/search?q=les+paul+studio Notice how Google has a rich snippet for Ebay saying that it has 229 results for Ebay's internal search result page: http://screencast.com/t/SLpopIvhl69z Notice how Sam Ash's internal search result page also ranks on page 1 of Google. I've always followed the best practice of setting internal search result pages to "noindex." Previously, our company's many Magento eCommerce stores had the internal search result pages set to be "index," and Google indexed over 20,000 internal search result URLs for every single site. I advised that we change these to "noindex," and impressions from Search Queries (reported in Google Webmaster Tools) shot up on 7/24 with the Panda update on that date. Traffic didn't necessarily shoot up...but it appeared that Google liked that we got rid of all this thin/duplicate content and ranked us more (deeper than page 1, however). Even Dr. Pete advises no-indexing internal search results here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/duplicate-content-in-a-post-panda-world So, why is Google rewarding Ebay and Sam Ash with page 1 rankings for their internal search result pages? Is it their domain authority that lets them get away with it? Could it be that noindexing internal search result pages is NOT best practice? Is the game different for eCommerce sites? Very curious what my fellow professionals think. Thanks,

Duplicate internal links on page, any benefit to nofollow
Link spam is naturally a hot topic amongst SEO's, particularly post Penguin. While digging around forums etc, I watched a video blog from Matt Cutts posted a while ago that suggests that Google only pays attention to the first instance of a link on the page As most websites will have multiple instances of a links (header, footer and body text), is it beneficial to nofollow the additional instances of the link? Also as the first instance of a link will in most cases be within the header nav, does that then make the content link text critical or can good on page optimisation be pulled from the title attribute? I would appreciate the experiences and thoughts Mozzers thoughts on this thanks in advance!

How Google treat internal links with rel="nofollow"?
Today, I was reading about NoFollow on Wikipedia. Following statement is over my head and not able to understand with proper manner. "Google states that their engine takes "nofollow" literally and does not "follow" the link at all. However, experiments conducted by SEOs show conflicting results. These studies reveal that Google does follow the link, but does not index the linked-to page, unless it was in Google's index already for other reasons (such as other, non-nofollow links that point to the page)." It's all about indexing and ranking for specific keywords for hyperlink text during external links. I aware about that section. It may not generate in relevant result during any keyword on Google web search. But, what about internal links? I have defined rel="nofollow" attribute on too many internal links. I have archive blog post of Randfish with same subject. I read following question over there. Q. Does Google recommend the use of nofollow internally as a positive method for controlling the flow of internal link love? [In 2007] A: Yes – webmasters can feel free to use nofollow internally to help tell Googlebot which pages they want to receive link juice from other pages

(Matt's precise words were: The nofollow attribute is just a mechanism that gives webmasters the ability to modify PageRank flow at link-level granularity. Plenty of other mechanisms would also work (e.g. a link through a page that is robot.txt'ed out), but nofollow on individual links is simpler for some folks to use. There's no stigma to using nofollow, even on your own internal links; for Google, nofollow'ed links are dropped out of our link graph; we don't even use such links for discovery. By the way, the nofollow meta tag does that same thing, but at a page level.) Matt has given excellent answer on following question. [In 2011] Q: Should internal links use rel="nofollow"? A:Matt said: "I don't know how to make it more concrete than that." I use nofollow for each internal link that points to an internal page that has the meta name="robots" content="noindex" tag. Why should I waste Googlebot's ressources and those of my server if in the end the target must not be indexed? As far as I can say and since years, this does not cause any problems at all. For internal page anchors (links with the hash mark in front like "#top", the answer is "no", of course. I am still using nofollow attributes on my website. So, what is current trend? Will it require to use nofollow attribute for internal pages?0 -
Rel= Author : Google suggests that we include this. Can i link to my FB profile
There have been several reference on how Google is trying to build author profiles so that it can effectively measure the authors authority based on the Rel=Author. I quite liked this idea , but my site is a user generated content website. So how can i leverage this ? . One thing which i was thinking was if its a good idea to link to the customers Facebook profile , plan to collect this during sign up.

Tool to calculate the number of pages in Google's index?
When working with a very large site, are there any tools that will help you calculate the number of links in the Google index? I know you can use site:www.domain.com to see all the links indexed for a particular url. But what if you want to see the number of pages indexed for 100 different subdirectories (i.e. www.domain.com/a, www.domain.com/b)? is there a tool to help automate the process of finding the number of pages from each subdirectory in Google's index?
