Is the keyword difficulty tool the most helpful in all situations?
-
I understand that the scores it generates are essentially based on the difficulty of appearing on the first SERP for the keyword in question. That said, I am having a lot of difficulty finding keywords in my niche which return a score that would make this easily achievable for a site of my size....
The reason I'm pointing this out is because theoretically, a keyword could have a HIGHLY competitive first SERP, with a significant drop-off on the second SERP, which would make achieving a top ranking on that page substantially easier. So my question really is, is the importance of appearing on the first SERP so unequivocally important that it is a pointless activity to attempt deliberately to rank for keywords on the second SERP, which is ignored by the keyword difficulty tool?
I know the breakdown of clicks goes something like 40% for top spot, 12% for second and downwards from there, but if a certain query has over a million searches per month, for example, it would still be possible to get considerable amounts of traffic by trying to rank highly on the second SERP, which the keyword difficulty tool cannot help with. So is this really a useless activity?

Bah, I haven't read the white paper yet, but now I'm even more confused! Both previous answerers veered towards "use the keyword difficulty too, go for keywords you think you have a good chance of hitting the first SERP for," whereas this study would suggest doing otherwise might not be a bad strategy. Hmm.

I agree with all of your theoretical arguments.
From practical experience I have found second page rankings to be worth very little even if you are selling a retail product at the lowest price on the web.
....but if a certain query has over a million searches per month, for example, it would still be possible to get considerable amounts of traffic by trying to rank highly on the second SERP...
That is a possibility, but the probability is very low. As a general rule that type of traffic is going to attract significant competition. The websites that rank on the second page are either... still moving up.... lost their determination... ran out of resources.... have been beaten down. You might be able to get some significant traffic from long tail searches if you write substantive content that fills diversity niches that very few others are covering.
I am having a lot of difficulty finding keywords in my niche which return a score that would make this easily achievable for a site of my size....
I know what you are saying. I think that you have two obvious choices. 1) Find a different niche..... or.... 2) Gather the resources needed to mount a big attack.
For retail sites I think that the keyword tool is a valuable "glimpse" of what the competition might be like. However, I think that once you have experience in a niche you can simply go to the first page of the search results and see WHO is ranking there and decide how easy or difficult the fight is going to be.
For information sites I don't use the keyword tool to make decisions on where to attack. Instead I go to the first page of the SERPs and look at the top sites and ask myself if I can beat their content. If the answer is yes then I attach. If not then I pick a different SERP.
The two questions that I use in place of keyword difficulty numbers are.... WHO is competing?.... and.... WHAT has been published?

As you are seeing well from the percentages you mention, the second page still gets traffic, but you can get the greatest results in the first 3 places of the first page. I think if you are optimizing than always go for the first and you will see the difference in number of visitors obtained from the first and the secong page in youranalytics.

Need Help with www and non-www redirect
Hi everyone, I've been looking around the forum and found some similar topics but none of them have solved my problem. Anyway, I'm new to SEO and found that when I use Open Site Explorer for the www version of my site I see the links directed to my page, but none of my twitter stats show up. When I do the same for my non-www version. I see my twitter stats, but no links. Facebook seems unchanged. Also, the Page Authority is much higher for the www (I assume because of the links) It is my understanding that it doesn't matter which version of the domain is used, I just need to pick one and stick with it (on Google Webmaster Tools, etc.). And that I also need to do a 301 redirect for the version that I'm not using. The issue now is that I have a 301 redirect, and when I type in my url in any version (http, https, www, non-www) it all redirects in the browser without issue. So i know users are getting to the right page, but the Open Site Explorer still sees them as 2 different sites. My concern is that if Open Site Explorer sees it this way then Google may see it this way as well and I could be missing out on potential rankings. I'm currently doing the redirect in the .htaccess file. The redirect looks like this: RewriteEngine On
Moz Pro | | opstart
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://mydomain.com/$1 [R=301,L] Any Ideas on what I need to do to properly 301 redirect the site so that my preferred version can get credited with the links, twitter, and Page Authority stats? Also, I'm using wordpress and it has the URL set to the non-www version of the site. However, I think I would like to change this to the www version because most of the links are directing to www, and I also think people are more familiar with that format. Anyway, sorry for the long post. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.0 -
SeoMoz keyword page grader report card
Hi Ive recently 301 redirected old pages/urls to new pages/urls due to a site redesign. The seomoz kw report card is still reporting the old urls though with a significantly reduced score for most pages (i.e. from A's to now C's, from B to now D's etc). Does this mean mozbot is following the 301's & its actually the new urls being graded as such or is it referring to the old pages ? I will be adding the new urls to report card shortly but just interested in clarifying the above since i would have thought, if it is the old pages, they would not be reporting any score for those, or its scoring the new pages ? Many Thanks Dan

Why my seomoz keyword ranking are different to google SERPs
I use Cute Rank to check my keywords ranking in Google, but after last update seomoz is showing some of keyword ranked much higher than Cute Rank. I checked them manually and they are on positions showed by Cute Rank and not by Seomoz. Can someone explain me why is that?

Has the relevancy of SEOmoz tools disappeared?
I have A rankings for my on-site grades for my most important keywords. I have no Critical issues and no Warnings with my Crawl Diagnostics. Most of the Competiive Link analysis data shows my site beating out the competition. If all this is accurate, how can my SERPs continue to decrease and lesser pages with terrible optimization and backlinking be ranking higher? I even have a facebook page beating me in the results. If there is nothing left for me to address using SEOmoz, and I keep getting worse & results, doesn't it mean that the SEOmoz tools are not relevant to producing actual results? Or, am I missing something?

Does the page authority data also considers the on page factors like the presence of keyword in the title, meta text, and keyword frequency ??
The moz difficulty score considers four factors for the top websites. are the on page factors included in the page authority data ?
