Helpful to utilize long-tail keyword URLs to point to parts of your website?
-
Does it help, hurt or do nothing for SEO to utilize long-tail keyword URLs to point to specific pages of your website.
For example, you're a vet and have your business name website, but what if you bought:
CharlotteVeterinarianforCats.com
CharlotteVeterinarianforDogs.com
etc. and pointed them to specific pages in your business website.
-
These are long-tail keyword domains. Yes, I would allow them to expire and allow my competitors use them in a strategy that is ineffective.
-
Let the domain names expire? Why? So the competition can pick them up and use them against you? You might not agree with my methods, but to let the domain names expire would be a mistake given the current weight google gives to exact match domains.
-
Agreed. And focus on best practices for local or regional optimization. If your business is only really focused in Charlotte, for instance, there are many other things you can do to help with this geo optimization.
-
I would let those domains expire and buy beer with the money savings. Then spend the time savings improving my primary website.
-
You are very welcome. If I could also suggest checking out the article "The Beginner's Checklist for Learning SEO"
It is under the "Learn SEO" tab. This might help you organize your to-do's and set up goals for your efforts!

Laurie,
I agree with Inhouseninja and would add this: When you buy the domain, try to purchase it so that it is under a different name, on a different server. Minimally, have it on a different C-block. I am not sure how much from a percentage point of view it can effect link evaluation, but we know that it does.
So, if both of the new domains are on the same server, owned by the same entity, you will not get near the weight from the search engines (if any).I do this in a couple of verticals but we the sites are actually fully related, have contact forms and other mechanisms for customer contact, etc. These sites are about 5 pages (not sure that any more would improve our lot) and we are able to use them for linking to the main site. If our main site did not exist, these would be real functioning sites that could be affiliate sites, etc.
Best,

The Whiteboard Friday video was perfect to help me start at the very beginning - thank you for suggesting that (I can't believe I missed it on my own!). There are a million things to do and consider and being overwhelmed and trying to piece it all together was the biggest problem. After the video, I'm starting at square one so I really appreciate your answer!

I can't tell you what the best approach is for you. For me, I look for domination of a niche when it comes to local search. The above posting is how I do it, but it might not be the best method for you. I haven't had success with simply redirecting a domain name. I have had great success with the method I've mentioned above - linking from the keyword domain to a page on my main site with the exact keyword phrase after the keyword domain has been established in Google. In fact, what I often see is the #1 ranking for the keyword domain (exact match keyword) and a #2 or #3 ranking for the page I link to from the keyword domain on my main site.
Hope that makes sense. lol.
-
I think you would be better off optimizing those pages for your target keywords instead and optimizing your current URL's to include your keywords.
For example: www.compnayname.com/cat-veterinarian
You should watch the most recent Whiteboard Friday. Rand does a great job of showing how to optimize website content based on the keywords you are trying to rank for.
-
Gotcha - so redirecting the keyword domain to a site on the main website with related content is probably not the best approach?
-
I have had extensive success with this method. The catch is that you need to make the long-tailed keyword URL a site that is actually useful to the world. Don't just put up a 2 page website and link like crazy to your site. You need to make it useful with good content. I'd say 10 pages minimum of quality content. You can do this in about 3-4 days with a wordpress. Also, don't link to your MAIN site for a few months so that google trusts your other domain.
Some will argue with this, but it has worked very well for me in some niche markets. Also, you hold a domain name so that a competitor can't get it. Considering the weight google puts on domain names its worth the extra effort to hold and use any domain names you can find.
Again, be careful not to turn the site into a doorway site. Make the site useful with new articles and fresh content.

Should I concentrate keyword ranking locally or nationally?
Hi all, I have spent few last days reading here in community and watching Moz videos about keyword research. I used keywords planner tool. Here is the question. When I researched keywords I took into account search traffic nationwide UK rather then my local search volume. My photography business operates more for local customers rather then nationwide. Does it mean that I need to concentrate on my local city/region search volume rather then nationwide. After I have done Nationwide keyword research I realised that most of those keywords which are with really high search volumes are pretty much non existent in my local search results. I meant to the point that keyword search volume is under 10. Considering that I have small number of pages i could use them for, my guess is that it is no point to target those high search volume keywords as most likely those won't be my clients anyway. I might be getting all this wrong, but wanted to ask here. Thank you all, Regards, Armands

Potential Keyword Cannibalisation
Hi, I am concerned that our website's rankings are currently being affected by KW cannibalisation. We don't rank too badly for our target keywords but they could, of course, be better, especially as the niche is very competitive! One thing that is bothering me is that our internal pages do not rank well for these KWs and instead it is the homepage appearing in the rankings. This is despite the fact that the internal pages are optimised for the different keywords. Basically the HP is also targeting these same keywords and I was wondering if this is affecting our rankings overall? I am not keen to risk changing the homepage in case our rankings suffer massively and we drop out of Google completely. If anyone could offer some advice then that would be great. Is it simply a case of trying to get external links pointing to these internal pages? Would internal linking to them prove effective as well? Cheers Tom

Which keyword for title
I'm trying to figure out what to use for my title text. It's for a structural steel fabrication company. Adwords has the average monthly searches for "structural steel" and "steel fabrication" identical at 5,400. It has "structural steel fabrication" at 390 which I get that since its longer and a little more specific will have less searches. My question is if I make the title "structural steel fabrication" does google just see it as 1 big keyword or will it rank for "structural steel" and/or "steel fabrication"? What would any of you go with here? All 3 keyword strings make sense for the person seeing the title. Thanks for any advice you can give, Clay

Long URL in Daily Reports: Adding Dates instead of keywords
Hello, One of my clients posts a daily review of the finance market. it's been a discussion in our SEO team, whether to add the title to the URL or to write the date of the daily review in the URL instead. Adding keywords instead of dates: advantage: Adding keywords to the URL helping getting ranked for those keywords.
Keyword Research | | JonsonSwartz
disadvantage: the URL comes out too long. what do you suggest in this case? keeping the keywords in the URL or adding dates instead and lose one of the important factors which affects getting ranked for the specific keywords.0 -
Keyword with or without stress?
hi to everyone, I'm new here I'm doing some research for keywords related to sofa in brazil. Portuguese use lot of stress in writing words. there are many important keywords that should be written with the stress. For example: sofás but I'm measuring many more researches for the same word without stress (see attachment). This is the same for many other key phrases with 2 or 3 words. in 90% of the case, key phrases without stress has many more researches Now I have 3 questions: results are very similar for these two keys. are really two different keys or are they the same for google? what number to keep for total search? the higher? the sum between the two? what keywords I have to use in the pages? "sofás" is the correct one, but "sofas" has many more research? U1sYe.png

Worried about keyword cannibalization
I've been reading a lot about keyword cannibalization and I'm worried that some of my sub pages may be pulling rank from my home page. If I'm trying to rank my home page for the keyword phrase "blue widget manufacturing" and I have sub pages with the titles "blue manufacturing services", "blue widget enginnering", "medical widget manufacturing" is it possible that those pages could be causing me to commit keyword cannibalization? I'm looking at a lot of the results for my keyword phrase and they don't seem to have additional pages with similar keyword phrases. Wondering if I should change my titles so they don't look as optimized.

Keyword categories.
Hello everyone, After watching keyword research for motivated marketers (pro webinar), I've put together a master framework. This works like a charm, however, I'm having trouble with a few categories. They are picking up keywords that are not in the marker that are assigned to the category. For example, I have one category with 10 simple markers like red, green, blue, but when I apply the filter, the results include words that are outside these markers like Career One. . Baffled! Anyone help? Thank you in advance. J
