Changing URL Structure
-
We are going to be relaunching our website with a new URL structure. My question is, how is it best to deal with the migration process in terms of old URLS appearing whilst we launch the new ones.
How best should we launch the new structure, considering we've in the region of 10,000 pages currently indexed in Google.
-
Another thought might be to place a noindex on the new pages to start with and as we migrate and 301 redirect the old to the new remove the noindex on the new pages ?
Thoughts ??

Bump - can anyone else offer some input ?
-
Yes, that is the problem we are going to have. Can anyone else help or offer some advice ?
-
Hmm, I'd release the new pages gradually. 10,000 pages hitting the index in short order may get your site noticed and maybe treated as spam.
Maybe someone else on here can give you better guidance on the release schedule but I'd go with maybe 100 to 150 pages a day. That's a 3 month release plan.

On another point, the new pages will all have new meta, content etc, so if we left the old pages online until we had the chance to go through them I don't think we'd have any problem re duplicate content.

Hi Steve,
I fully understand the workings of 301 redirect etc. However, my concern is we have over 10,000 pages. Whats the best way to change from URL to another ?
Shall I release the new homepage, with links to the new already created pages, and then go through the old content and redirect it all ?
-
OK, for each new page you implement, 301 redirect the old one to the new (when the new is complete) that way you won't loose any traction from google.
a 301 Permanent Redirect tell the SEs that your content has MOVED PERMANETLY
Make the 301 redirect another action on your make live list for each page.

Hi, the old URLs will still remain whilst the new ones are being uploaded. There is no real pattern between the old and new URLs. All new URLs are more SEO friendly and keyword targetted.
Our old pages use ASP so I can easily implement a way of updating the old pages with a redirect.
My concern is what process should we take when changing the URLs in the transition period.
-
Hi,
Presumably you'll be getting "404 errors" as you migrate / remove the old pages. My view is that you'll need to carefully construct a 301 redirect in a .htaccess file.
This may be a real bind if there is no real pattern to your old structure that you could "translate" to the new URLs.
I'm not good on redirecting using GREP so maybe someone else here could advise. Could you post some URL examples (old => New)

You should create 301 redirects for all old pages. By the way you can use "Mod rewrite" module for Apache.
If it's hard to determine rules, you can redirect object pages to new category page, but of course it is less efficiency way.

Did We Implement Structured Data Correctly?
Our designer/developer recently implemented structured data on our pages. I'm trying to become more educated on how it works since I'm the SEO marketing specialist on the team and the one that writes and publishes the majority of our content. I'm aware it's extremely important and needs to be done, I just don't know how to do it yet. The developer was on our team for over a year, we recently let him go. Now, I'm going through all the pages to make sure it's done correctly. I'm using the structured data testing tool to look at the pages and have been playing with the structured data markup helper. I would REALLY appreciate it if one of my fellow MOZ fans & family can help me determine if it's done correctly. We do not currently have any schema plugs installed that I know of. So I'm not sure how he implemented the Schema code. I would like to know what I need to do moving forward to the additional content we publish as well as what to do to correctly implement Schema if not already. When I manually look at one of our FAQ pages I see multiple schema data formats detected... I'm not sure if we're supposed to have multiple or just one----> https://www.screencast.com/t/TjHphL7jsI I also noticed in the Question schema data for that same page... the accepted answer is empty. Rankings drastically changing
I monitor our positions for a few keywords but they are very unstable. One day they will be at position 1, 2 or 3 and then all of a sudden not even on Google. We use an IP redirect to guide users to the correct site and I suspect this may be a cause. Could anybody shed some light? Thanks

Wordpress Permalink Structure
A quick Wordpress Permalink checkup... I'm generally a fan of %postname% Permalink structure in Wordpress - although this does create a completely flat architecture, so that ALL Pages AND Posts are found at www.domain.com/_________ I'm sure I've heard, read, or ingested somewhere that it makes more sense to use /blog/%postname% which then makes all Blog Posts reside at www.domain.com/blog/________ with the static Page content still being at www.domain.com/________ Any thoughts to why this would NOT be a good idea? To me this seems more logical.. and like I say I'm sure I've heard an authority say Google kind of prefers that it can differentiate Blog content from everything else. I've used this successfully on a few sites so far, and all seems to be good. (Moz although not Wordpress, uses this structure for it's blog). Thanks!

URL - Keywords
My domain name contains my top two keywords. Am I penalized if I create another page where I add my domain key words a 2nd time after the domain name along with a subcategory and the name of a state. I don't know what white hat and black hat is so I want to make sure I stay white hat. Also I didn't know it but is it true that your title shows up in your domain name?

How important is it to clarify URL parameters?
We have a long list of URL parameters in our Google Webmasters account. Currently, the majority are set to 'let googlebot decide.' How important is it to specify exactly what googlebot should do? Would you leave these to 'let googlebot decide' or would you specify how googlebot should treat each parameter?

How does changing hosting affect rankings?
I have a hosting account that is ancient. So is it's CPanel, its way of operation (I have to call in to change the zone file), and its hardware and software (It can't even recognize Wordpress as a user so i have to change permissions to change anything.) I plan on moving the site, but I want to prepare for any changes that may happen. Currently the site ranks between #1 or 3 for quite a few very valuable words. It is also in season for this business. I know changing hosting data or servers can cause google to temporarily drop rankings. Does anyone have any experience with this or now how long the faded rankings can last? Or if its even true?
