Competitive Domain Analysis Observation
-
Hi Folks
I have been doing some analysis via SEOMOZ tools of www.anglianhome.co.uk which shows that in their linking root domains they have links from
Are these genuine links or have Anglian managed to spam/black hat the process some how because I cant find any reference to their home improvement firm website on any of these major global websites? But it is obviously working because for searches here in the UK it appears prominently on many competitive search phrases.

The domain authority may be high, but the page authority is usually fairly low. The search engines are wise to people creating thin content on sites with a high domain authority, and they realize that anyone is able to create a site on wordpress.com and take that into account.

Thanks - interesting that we might be operating in the same space - I am just doing it for a small local company - be interested to hear what plans you have re SEO in this space / and share notes

But the links from Wordpress and Bravenet are followed links? which will help their link/search performance?
If the above is the case it seems a quick win to boost your link profile as the domain authority is very high on these three examples.

Hi,
It's probably best to look at the actual links in OSE and not just the root linking domains. If you go to http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?page=1&site=www.anglianhome.co.uk&sort=page_authority&filter=&source=external&target=domain&group=1 you can see that the Apple link is from iTunes, the Wordpress link is from a free blog on Wordpress (a subdomain), and the bravenet link is also a user's page on bravenet that is a links page. So no worries here, they are just ordinary pages on user subdomains for the second two domains, and an iTunes app link for the first domain you have listed.

Hi There
The Apple one is obvious. The created their own App and is for sale in the Itunes store.
I didnt see the other two in OSE after scrolling for a few pages in the linking domains.
VERY unlikely a company like Anglian would use, or a SEO agency that uses, these techniques as it's way to risky. They are a well known brand, have a good modern website and a strong link profile.
The list of top domains is there thanks to OSE but do take a look at Majestic SEO as well to unearth far more.
Good luck. We have a potential client who sells conservatories and sealed units so no doubt we will be up against them soon too!

Automatic links from other domains when we create a new landing page - Is this a spammy technique?
Hi everyone, Recently we've discovered 2-3 sites (which we own the domains names) and these sites seem to automatically create links to our new landing pages on our main site. Those sites also can't be accessed in your browser as it redirects straight to our main website. So, for example, we create a new landing page on our main site, and then Moz has been picking up links to this page from these other domains with text such as "Book now". I think historically someone in the company set up loads of sites with redirects and there must be something automatically happening. Is this likely to be a spammy technique? Ie we seem to be getting "follow" links from other domains every time we create a new page." Also as this could be quite a negative thing we've discovered I can't really give our out business links, but really appreciate your tips and advice. I'm trying to work out what to do if this is a spammy technique and also affecting our trust scores etc and what we should do about it. Thanks for your help and input. 🙂Mike

Best way to set up a support site - sub domain, separate site or com/support?
My company is setting up our support site. It has been suggested that we set it up as a separate domain - www.company-support.com, rather than setting it up as a sub-domain (www.support.company.com) or the usual www.company.com/support. The person who proposed this believes it wlll create link juice, but i wonder if splitting the traffic will create more harm than good? Opinions please!

Advice on buying a domain name for a valuable link
There is an expired blog which scores well for a search term I'm interested in. I'd like to know if people think it's a good idea to buy it to get a link essentially? Also, if I buy the domain and the content is wiped, does anyone have any tips on what I should do in regards to content to maintain the domains value? I don't generally look to buy domains for links but on this occasion it could be worth the effort and expense.

301 Direct with a deleted domain newbie
Hello I'm wondering if the 301 redirect to your money site with a high pr deleted domain still works post penguin. Will all the link strength pass on to the new domain? What if the domain has nothing to do with your niche? Does that affect it or no?

Unique Domains vs. Total Links?
At what point is there diminishing returns from getting multiple links from one website? Edit: To clarify, when doing competitor research I come across lots of sites that have say 500 linking domains with 5000 total links. When setting goals and calculating the types of links I should go after, I'm not certain which number is the one actually helping the site to rank.

Publish content on current domain for content boost or new domain for links?
I have about 1000 unique and organically generated articles. My quote compare business has had briefs submitted by clients for over two years. The content has only been accessible to registered members. I want to polish it ASAP. Is it better to publish the content on the existing website in a sub folder or set up a new website to publish the content and have every article link back to the main website? Content is around 300 words x 1000.

New domain ranking higher. Looks like spam backlinks.
A new site has appeared in our industry, and has taken the number 1 spot that we had for some time (years), in addition to some other great rankings above us for good keywords. The site to my eyes is no better than ours, but what it does have is lots of links from different root domains. However these root domains are spam, as far as I can see. You know the type, nonsensical blog comments, even links in nonsensical content on other sites. You couldn't make any sense out of the text if you tried. I think this is the reason this site is ranked above ours now. His domain and pages have higher mozTrust and mozRank already, despite it being a brand new site. I realise the importance of incoming links, especially from different, good quality individual domains, but my question is, do we join him by getting spammy links everywhere?
