My site has dropped three places in one day i do not understand it
-
Hi our site has always been either number one in google or at the bad times number two for the search word gastric band hypnotherapy but today we have dropped three places and we do not understand what has happened
Can anyone please have a look and see what we need to do to get back on top. the site that is above us does not have much information on the subject so we are very puzzled
here is our site www.clairehegarty.co.uk/virtual-gastric-band-with-hypnotherapy
many thanks

Can I just make a generic comment. Webmasters 'can't understand" it when a site goes from from, say 1st to 5th and consider that something must be wrong. Yet are not surprised when a site goes from 5th to 1st. I don't get it!

We have been using a wide variety but I think the main problem has been using to many of the same keyword. I need to mix it up with a wider selection 2 to 3 keywords plus the site name also linking in.
Article links and guest blog posts are also tactics we are now using.
-
hi Gary. what link building tactics have you been using
-
We have also been experiencing some changes in rankings recently and are changing tactics on our link building tactics.
-
hi we get a great deal of traffic because we have the cities there and get a huge responce from people calling because they put it in the search engine to find someone near them. so my problem is, it looks messy but it brings us a load of traffic and customers and i am trying to work out a way to make it look better as it looks messy

If you use Firefox to view your site, right click on an image and select view image info. You'll see something like the screenshot below, which shows you the size of all of the images on that page, both in dimensions and in the size of the file.
Here's a good Whiteboard Friday about image optimization in general, and it talks about image file size.

Here is an in-depth post about site speed. Don't worry about the advanced stuff, mainly look at the tools to use to find the load speed of your page.

The part about directories was in the alt or title tag for the image itself; I can't reference it now that you've removed the image reference.
Regarding the links at the bottom..look in your analytics, do you get anybody coming in on organic traffic using any city-related words? If not, you know for sure it isn't working. Also consider just removing it on all your pages for a week and see what happens.
-
just found the image, that is something i cannot understand. not sure why that has appeared, this is something we removed a long time ago. thanks for finding that.
-
hi no i was not putting it on here for a link i was making it easier for people to click it so they could see the problem.
The bottom of the site is a major headache for me. i am trying to get people to know the areas that we cover but i cannot find another better way of doing it and for months now i have been racking my brain of finding a better way of doing it. if you have any suggestions then that would be great.
the broken image is something that we are sorting out at the moment
where is it saying about free advertising. i am confused, there should be nothing there saying that. please point this out as this is worrying.
can you please explain about the following and what site it is on please and how we can solve this
If you're concerned about page load time, take a look at your image size and resize the images before they're on the page, not in the code. That one about the results is quite large and could be probably 1/10 the file size that it is now without a problem.
-
I done what you said and done some press releases and it is now back to normal. a bit of a scare for a minute. many thanks
-
Jared, I'm seeing her keyword phrase in the H1 tag; can you explain what you meant?
Diane, all of the links in Q&A are nofollowed, so putting in anchor text in your questions in Q&A won't help your site, and the admins often remove them anyway.
I'd remove the spammy-looking screen of text with all of those cities at the bottom of the page, that's not going to help you at all.
You appear to have a broken image on that page as well, at the very bottom that links to In2Town. That link doesn't make sense either, as it says that there is free advertising there with the directories, but I know from previous questions you're targeting that site as a lifestyle magazine.
If you're concerned about page load time, take a look at your image size and resize the images before they're on the page, not in the code. That one about the results is quite large and could be probably 1/10 the file size that it is now without a problem.
-
thanks for that. can you give me an example of the keywords in the h1 tag, sorry new at all this. i thought i had put the keywords into h1 but maybe i am wrong.
i have been considering about putting a video on the site but i did not know if this would slow the site down and also if it helps with ranking or not. i did read somewhere where it said that videos are good on sites but then people responded by saying it makes no difference so i did not know what to think.
would the video have to be something i made or maybe a video that is already out there on the subject
-
Hey Diane,
This may have been one of those little algorithm tweaks Google is so fond of. They may be playing with their exact match domain strength.
The important thing is to not panic! Get a couple of quality links, or maybe go vertical with a quick video, which could do well if you embed it.
You could also write a post about gastric band hypnotherapy and point the anchor text to the page that normally ranks, or link from content that already exists.
Also, you could throw your keyword in the H1 tag.
You're right, those other sites are garbage!

Drop in Rankings
Hello Webmasters, My site has incurred a sudden dip in rankings across sections. We conducted an analysis and have observed the following two major issues: Unnatural Links Penalty: Our site was issued an Unnatural Links Penalty on May 23. Basically, we have both 'http' and 'https' versions of our website registered on Webmaster tools. Initially, the warning showed up on the 'http' version and thus we started a cleanup by extracting the linking domains and have also filed a reconsideration request once all the spammy domains were removed and rightly disavowed. Recently, we got another manual action warning on the 'https' version regarding the unnatural links. So we have started with the cleanup activity right away. While analyzing this issue, we came across another major problem regarding the two versions which is our next concern and is mentioned below. https Canonical Issue: For more insights, we went through our site’s content and found that our website is following the below pattern Our 'http' version of the webpages get 301 redirected to the 'https' version. This 'https' version again has a canonical pointing to the 'http' version thus creating a loop. To conclude, I request your valuable learnings and thoughts on the following: Which of these issues are likely to have affected our website’s ranking Which version is likely to be preferred by Google (https or http) in our case

Will Links to one Sub-Domain on a Site hurt a different Sub-Domain on the same site by affecting the Quality of the Root Domain?
Hi, I work for a SaaS company which uses two different subdomains on our site. A public for our main site (which we want to rank in SERPs for), and a secure subdomain, which is the portal for our customers to access our services (which we don't want to rank for) . Recently I realized that by using our product, our customers are creating large amounts of low quality links to our secure subdomain and I'm concerned that this might affect our public subdomain by bringing down the overall Authority of our root domain. Is this a legitimate concern? Has anyone ever worked through a similar situation? any help is appreciated!

Which one is the best
Dear Seo experts, 1,5 month ago i started a informative website, i started it with a blank registrated domainname. Now 1 month further I've stacked the website with content and did much linkbuilding. Yesterday i ve bought a domainname from quarantine, its a domainname around 6 years old and has a bunch of backlinks already. What to do next? The first one has good content and good recent linkbuilding done. The second is a better domainname and is old and has old backlinks. And also higher PA and DA then the first one. Should i now go for the first one and 301 redirect the old domainname to the new one. Or should I do it the opposite way, 301 redirect the new website to the old domainname and move all content to the old domainname and try to move all linkbuilding to older domain? Hopefully anyone could give me a great answere, thank you so much! Kind regards, Menno

Shutting down a site, where do I 301 it?
I'm working with a few international sites that we are going to collapse into one main site. Our current plan is to 301 the 4 other sites into our main site home page. Is this ok? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks

On-site adjustment opinions
Hi folks, I've got a fairly interesting scenario. I'm trying to rank this page (http://www.staysa.co.za/sa/1-2-0-0-1/East-London/accommodation) better for the term, "accommodation east london". The client isn't keen on making many changes and it was built horribly with ASP, half CMS, half not. I have made the following changes today: I introduced two paragraphs of text below the H1 tag. I changed "East London Bed and Breakfast", "East London Conference Venues", "East London Cottage / Chalet" to just "Bed and Breakfast", "Conference Venues", "Cottage / Chalet" as the continual key phrase duplication in my experience is a bad move. I've made a change to the title tag (this is a huge mission as it's not CMS controlled, so I had to teach myself some basic ASP to do so). Meta data.. nightmare to change unfortunately, at least not without rewriting part of the CMS. I'm wondering, are there any other on-site factors that I'm missing? I'm not a fan of site-wide links, so I don't want to put an exact match anchor text link from the sidebar/footer to the page, not unless someone can motivate why I should. Keen to hear everyone's opinions 🙂

Google has not been visiting my site
Hi I am working on a site at the moment http://www.cheapflightsgatwick.com and i had the site using a different template and in the search engines for the search term cheap flights gatwick we were fourth and for the term holiday magazine we were 12th in google but now we are not even in google on the first page for the search terms. But now after changing the template in joomla our rankings have gone out of the window. It took me about a day to sort out the site with the new template so i was not expecting any problems with the search engines but for some reason there is. If you put into the search engine www.cheapflightsgatwick.com then you will see that google has not visited the site for four days and also it is not showing the description and instead it is showing details about joomla. Can anyone let me know if there is anything i need to do to sort this out and why google is taking so long to visit my site
