Subdomain v. subdirectory v. other domain for blogs
-
I have a good amount of content on our main domain ( http://m00.biz/w4Ljfr ) let's say for discussion it's doctors.com and as you can see, much of it is in subdirectories. Traditionally this was the approach. Now I have some other content on subdomains but it's primarily directories and databases.
Now I see that Google is giving subdomains their own SER as if they are a separate site and competitors are locking in the top few results merely by having their content on subdomains. Now I have an opportunity of doing two things:
1. Current content: moving all the content of the past few years on their own subdomain (forum, blog), and I'll be moving forum software anyways. Not sure about our own guide, which has been up there for a while.
2. New content: putting up some new blogs/magazines such as "Doctor's Handbook." Let's say that is a common phrase. I can choose between the following:
I've got a bit of a quandary here, not sure of the best course of action and am curious to hear from many of you who have handled situations like this before.

I am not going to tell you what I "would do"... I am going to tell you what I "have done".
Within the past year I have redirected all subdomains into folders in the root directory of the main site. Most thin content was thrown overboard, some thin content is being improved, the rest of the thin content is temporary and has been noindex, followed.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys. EGOL - the branding aspect is a good point for the domain v. other domain issue. But I'm still troubled by the subdomain v. subdirectory setup.
Dan - The user experience of subdomain v. subdirectory is not relevant with a good dropdown menu. I don't know that they will type in "guide" to get there or "journal" either, except after becoming very familiar with the site. They'd know the subdomain anyways. The problem is I've moved to mixture of both. Google allegedly penalized us for having 'thin" content in a lawye r directory that was "thin" and supposedly more acceptable on the subdomain, which is a whole other site - at least to Google. To me, this is a paradox. The form over substance treatment is ridiculous and leads to ridiculous results (like one dominant site appearing 3-5 times at the top of page 1 as if each subdomain is a separate site.) Now I'm being told that Google is reacting to this but I'm still not sure what this means. Will I be creating problems by serving up my content on subdomains (which also saves three characters of www and creates shorter urls)?
Bottom line - if you guys were resetting up the site and given Panda's killing "thinner" content such as storefronts and directories:
(a) would you stick with all subdirectories (or all subdomains) or use a combo of the two?
(b) If you'd use only one, which one would you use? I've got the site URL up there but, in short, the primary content is on the subdirectories.
(c) If you continue the subdirectory setup, how do I avoid getting killed by Panda solely because some content isn't as "thick" as others inherently, e.g. a storefront with products? Google doesn't seem to care much about noindex tags on my site for "thin" content.

Hi
I'd also look at this from the user's point of view. In my personal experience the first option (a subfolder) is the least confusing.

If your main site is already dominating the SERPs for every keyword that your blog will cover it might make sense to put this content on a subdomain or a secondary site..
However, if your main site is not killing the SERPs and the content that you will be publishing is worthy of links, tweets, likes, and other forms of sharing then I would place it in a folder on the primary domain. You want to focus this attention on the primary domain because this attention is what drives rankings.

Redirection of 100 domain to Main domain affects SEO?
Hi guys, An email software vendor managed by a different area of my company redirected 100 domains used for unsolicited email campaigns to my main domain. These domains are very likely to get blacklisted at some point. My SEO tool now is showing me all those domains as "linking" to my main site as do-follow links. The vendor states that this will not affect my main domain/website in any way. I'm highly concerned. I would appreciate your professional opinion about this. Thanks!!

Is surfacing top blog posts with read more link could create a boost in traffic to main domain?
Hi mozzers, Because our blog is located on blog.example.com on powered by Wordpress and currently can't migrate it to the main domain, unfortunately. Since we would like to grow our main's domain organic traffic and would like to test an option that could help us leverage the traffic of the top blog posts content. There is a Wordpress API that would allow us to get 100-200 words(snippet of the blog post) from the blog posts into the main domain that would provide a "Read more link" linking back to the blog.

If I redirect a subdomain, does this affect the parent domain?
Hi I have a company for example: abc.com and they have a subdomain def.abc.com with a lot of errors. These errors i believe affect the parent domain abc.com. So my company would like to redirect the subdomain to another domain altogther ex: xyz.com Can i redirect the subdomain def.abc.com to another website domain? Would this affect the parent domain in a good or bad way? Or should i be using an external links to point to a new domain for the subdomain? Trying to think what's best for SEO and the parent domain. Thanks!

Unique domains vs. single domain for UGC sites?
Working on a client project - a UGC community that has a DTC model as well as a white label model. Is it categorically better to have them all under the same domain? Trying to figure which is better: XXX,XXX pages on one site vs. A smaller XXX,XXX pages on one site and XX,XXX pages on 10-20 other sites all pointing to the primary site. The thinking on the second was that those domains would likely achieve high DA as well as the primary, and would passing their value to the primary. Thoughts? Any other considerations we should be thinking about?

Renaming your domain from an existing live domain and SEO implications - Please Help *shudder*
Please see the details below. Site A: http://south-african-holiday.mobi is an existing site that is our best site. It is Joomla 3.1 and runs all our ecommerce. Site B: http//www.southerncircle.com/ is our original and has the best DA but is out of date and pretty clunky. joomla 1.5 and all bookings (tour site) are redirected to Site A for processing. Instead of redesigning the Site A I'd like to change the domain name of http://south-african-holiday.mobi -> http://southerncircle.com So far my reading and research (Thanks MOZ for awesome forum!) has provided me with: 1. Do the SEO groundwork. i.e. remove dead links from both sites. Delete useless content and generally tidy up both sites. 2. Map all pages from site a: http://southerncircle.com -> http://south-africa-holiday/ so that the existing pages that have good ranking will have a home on the new site. 3. When ready do a small sample 301 redirect from: http://southerncircle.com to http://south-africa-holiday.mobi. 4. arghhhh now I'm stuck ..... If I redirect to this site then I lose my http://southerncircle.com domain which is what I want to keep....I just want the .mobi site to move to the southerncircle.com site.... I don't consider myself totally thick but this is really confuseing the *$%# out of me PLEASE could you give me some insight here. I'm sure it has been done before without completely losing the sites seo ranking and sending my site into SEO oblivion. If there are any JOOMLA gurus that have done this I'd love to hear from you as well. Many thanks in advance.

Different domains for multilingual website
Hey guys, A site that I'm currently working on as different domains for each website language. So for example: word1word2.com for the english version word3word4.com for the french version word5word6.com for spanish version .... Is it better to move all of the different languages to the same domain and use subfolders for each language /fr/... Please note that the domains being used bring in organic traffic as well as they are EMDs. Thank You.

What to do with keyword specific domains
I have a few domain names with the keywords I'm trying to target for my website. My website currently has been in operations for a couple years, and while not hugely authoritative, has built some value. Now, are these domain names with keywords any use to me? Is there any point to forward them to my site? Do I try to build up a page (or a few of content) and then have a link to my main site? Any insight would be mucho appreciated! Thanks!

If we add noindex to a subdomain, will the traffic to that subdomain still generate domain authority for the primary domain?
We are trying to decide whether a password protected site, that we will noindex, should be set up as a subdomain or if it should be its own domain. The determining factor here is whether or not having that noindexed subdomain will increase domain authority since its noindexed. Any ideas???
