Rankings Dropped Dramatically
-
Hi All,
I need some advice on this one, one of our websites is performing very badly and I am lost to know why.
We migrated from an old website www.myclient.co.uk and re-directed to www.myclient.com.
The issue we had was that the old site relied on search results i.e. www.myclient.co.uk/search+villas+in+marbella
However most ranked url's were not as tidy as the example above and had lots of characters. Because of this and the fact that all incoming links were to the homepage we do not carry out any 301 re-directs.
In some keywords we have increased our rankings but for others we have dropped dramatically.
keyword 1
4th Jan position 22
9th Jan position 90
keyword 2
4th jan position 34
9th jan position 89
keyword 3
4th jan position 12
9th jan position 16 (a smaller drop than the others)
We do have some top 10s for this domain so I don't think we have been penalised for anything but I am shocked to see such drops in rankings.
I have setup the website so that each page targets different keywords and I have checked and they get A grades within SEOmoz.
Any advice would be really appreciated, as the client is not too happy at the moment.
Many thanks
Andy

Hi Andrew -
If this question has been answer/the issue has been fixed, could you please mark it as Closed?
Thanks!

No nothing had changed on the homepage, the only thing we are trying to do is link build to internal pages so directories / social bookmarks would go to the specific page and not just the homepage.
However looking through the old stats before we worked on the site, he regularly had keywords going from page 1 to page 10, then a month or so later he would regain positions.
On the old site he relied on a search results page to generate different keyword positions, so they were not fixed pages. I wonder if this had an impact?
-
Odd that that the home page should disappear but not the other pages! Any ideas why that should have happened?
-
Good news, the rankings have re-appeared. Google decided to remove the homepage listing from its index hence the drop. However the homepage has now returned and listings have gone from outside 100 to positions between 8 - 20!
-
If it's had a complete overhaul then there's lots of things that might have affected the rankings. I'd tell your clients that any change is risky and may cause some disruption.
I don't see that there's been a total collapse of the rankings so the last thing you want your clients to do is panic.
Good luck!
-
Thanks John & Doug, really appreciate your feedback the site has had a complete overhaul and I think I underestimated the jump from .co.uk. The site never had many inbound links except from one website so I didn't think I would lose rankings.
I know the new pages are good as they are ranked well, so I will just boost the link building. But when clients are upset you want to make sure you have covered all bases and you haven't missed something obvious.
Cheers!

A few more thoughts - Did anything else happen apart from just the move to the .com domain? Any content changes or periods where the site was unavailable?
Apart from your rankings changing have you seen any other disruption of the SERPS?
I think I'm right in saying that a redirected link passes less link-juice than the original link. How competitive are the keywords your targetting? Will a small change in domain/page authority cause the changes to the rankings you're seeing?
What keywords are you targeting?
What was the reason for the switch to .com. Looks like both domains were registered at the same time and the domain name is pretty specific so I'm guessing that there are no negative signals associated with the .com domain.
I think John has the right idea. If you've ruled out all the obvious causes, I wouldn't get bogged down trying to work out what happened. I'd put the energy into building more links to compensate.
I don't know when this happened, maybe the drop in rankings isn't a long term thing.
-
Did you consolidate many domains into the .com, or just move the domain over completely from .co.uk to .com? In which countries have your rankings dropped? I am guessing UK.
The backlinks you have are not on great websites. Have you tried to get listed in places like the UK's version of the Better Business Bureau? Put in some work doing some guest posting and I bet your rankings will go up.
My guess is that if your rankings have dropped mostly in the UK, that it's the loss of the .co.uk ccTLD, which is definitely not an insurmountable hurdle, just might take a bit more work.

HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently Content-Length: 160 Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 Location: http://www.TangoHolidaySolutions.com/ Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Mon, 09 Jan 2012 19:46:04 GMT
looks like that is the right response.
-
I believe I have, as webmaster shows all the inbound links to the .com and not the .co.uk. the domain is www.tangoholidaysolutions.com. If you or John notice something stupid please don't be afraid to say!
-
Oh I see now. I honestly thought your site was myclient.co.uk. I see my mistake!
If OSE has picked up the 301, when you type in your old domain it will say something like "That URL redirects to (new url). Would you like to see that URL?"
Also, to spot-check server header responses, I use this tool: http://www.seoconsultants.com/tools/check-server-headers-tool/
-
I haven't even given you the domain name? But if I do want to check the OSE index how would I do this to ensure the 301 re-direct is working for google.
I know it works for the human as if you type in the old domain i.e. co.uk it goes to the .com.
Thanks
Andy

Hey Andrew -
From what I'm seeing in the OSE index and in my browser, you moved the content over to your new domain but did not forward your old domain. I know you said that you had a lot of links to your homepage on www.myclient.co.uk, and since you did not 301 this page and older pages, you've lost all your links.
Can you explain why you did not 301 your old domain?
-
I'm guessing that you're not getting the benefit of your inbound links that you had pointing to your old domain.
Have you followed these guidelines from google:

Desktop Ranking Disappeared After URL Change; Mobile Ranking Improved
A client's developer moved a site onto a new (WordPress) CMS, where the only change was URLs - the front end code stayed the same. The site is 10+ years old and previously had fantastic rankings (#1-4) with inner pages for some relatively generic search phrases (eg 10,000 searches / month in the UK, per Keyword Planner). Now, on Desktop searches the site isn't appearing anywhere in the 300+ results for a key search phrase, where it used to rank between #2-4; however over the last 3 weeks on Mobile the site ranks better than before, even though the site isn't at all mobile-friendly (it's over 10 years old). During the move, there were some errors by their developer: mistakenly left in a sitewide rel=canonical tag referring to the homepage 3-4 301s before finally reaching new URLs a lot of 301s missed (250+ crawl errors appeared in Search Console) page content differentiation by parameter, instead of individual URLs For example, the page that used to rank for the targeted phrase, this left 4 different URLs indexed, with the same content. To tackle this, we have so far: put in correct rel=canonical tags set up Search Console to recognise URL parameter as differentiating content fixed all crawl errors appearing in Search Console added a link direct to the problem page, direct from the homepage stopped duplicate content being indexed (including for the page in question) ensured the page load speed is still good (< 0.75s) Ranking for Desktop over Mobile would make sense, but not Mobile over Desktop! I'd really appreciate any advice on how to tackle this. Thanks!

Drop in Indexed Page + Organic Traffic
Hey Moz Community, I've been seeing a steady decrease in search console of pages being indexed by Google for our eCommerce site. This is corresponding to lower impressions and traffic in general this year. We started with around a million pages being indexed in Nov of 2015 down to 18,000 pages this Nov. I realized that since we don't have around 3,000 or so products year round this is mostly likely a good thing. I've checked to make sure our main landing pages are being indexed which they are and our sitemap was updated several times this year, although we're in the process of updating it again to resubmit. I also checked our robots.txt and there's nothing out of the ordinary. In the last month we've recently gotten rid of some duplicate content issues caused by pagination by using canonical tags but that's all we've done to reduce the number of pages crawled. We have seen some soft 404's and some server errors coming up in our crawl error report that we've either fixed or are trying to fix. Not really sure where to start looking to find a solution to the problem or if it's even a huge issue, but the drop in traffic is also not great. The drop in traffic corresponded to lose in rankings as well so there could be correlation or none. Any ideas here?

How do sites manage to rank better with no fresh content
hi, trying to work out why there are lots of sites that are ranking better than me. Our site www.in2town.co.uk has always been on the first page and for a long time we were number one in google for the term lifestyle magazine as well as being on the first page for other keywords. Our site is www.in2town.co.uk We had a site upgrade a few months ago and since then we have seen our rankings have dropped like a lead balloon. I do not understand why sites such as the following seem to rank better than me for the word lifestyle magazine http://www.lifestyle.org/ http://www.24sevenlifestyle.com/ http://www.lifestylesmagazine.com/website/ http://motabilitylifestyle.co.uk/ http://www.alifestylemagazine.com/ if anyone can help me understand what i am doing wrong and why my rankings have gone out of the window then it would be a huge help.

Ranking going down and down and disappears.
I asked a question a few weeks ago about a main keyword that we are targeting that is fluctuating up and down. The keyword is "trash bags" and that is what my company sells. All different colors, thicknesses and sizes. This isn't just a random keyword we are trying to optimize for, this is our business. Before I started optimizing the website for "trash bags" we used the term "garbage bags", now that we started we have been off the charts and on the charts, but we have never regained rankings. The trend finally looked like it was going upwards... but now I see I dropped off of google again. Is this normal? Should I be worried that google is penalizing me for this keyword (There is many links that have trash bags in the anchor text - but we do sell that!)? Here is a screenshot of our ranking history for trash bags: https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/no01

My Rankings Keep Going Down - Needs some more ideas on why...
Hi Everyone, I have been working on the website www.PetsSpark.com for a while now. I used to be on the first page for many of my keywords, now I am lucky if i am on the 2nd or 3rd. I stopped my SEO efforts for about 3 months while making changes to the website, its whithin these 3 months that I started dropping from the first page. The biggest thing I notice is the "type" of website now ranking for my main keywords. Mostly Forums, Blogs, or Product Review websites. Take for instance Dog Tear Stain Remover. I used to rank at about #5 for this keyword and now i rank at #20. I'm not sure if my loss of ranking is a combination of things like who Google is letting rank now or if there is something wrong on my website, etc. Can anyone give me a little insight?? Please.... I will also be happy to give more information about what has been going on if needed.

Local Keywords Not Ranking Well in a Geographic Location (but Rank Very Well Outside of Geographic Location)
Has anyone experienced, in the last few months, an issue where a website that once ranked well for 'local' terms in Google stopped ranking well for those terms (but saw a ranking decrease only within the geographic location contained within those keywords)? For example only, some 'root' keywords could be: Chicago dentist Chicago dentists dentist Chicago dentists Chicago What happens is that when a searcher searches from within the geographic area of Chicago, IL, the target website no longer ranks on the 1st page for these types of keyword phrases, but they used to rank in the top 3 perhaps. However, if someone was to search for the same keyword phrases from another city outside of Chicago or set a custom location (such as Illinois or even Milwaukee, WI perhaps) in their Google search, the target website appears to have normal (high) 1st page rankings for these types of terms. My own theory: At first I thought it was a Penguin related issue but the client's rankings overall haven't appeared to have been affected on the date(s) of Penguin updates. Authority Labs and Raven Tools (which uses Authority Labs data) did not detect any ranking decrease and still reports all the local keyword rankings as high on the 1st page of Google. However, when the client themselves goes to check their own rankings (as they are within that affected geographic area), they are no where to be found on the 1st page. :S After some digging I found that (one of) the company's Google Places listings (the main office listing) became an 'unsupported' status in Google Maps. So now I am thinking that this phenomenon is due to the fact that other listings are now appearing in search results for the same location. For example, in this case, an individual dentist's Google Places listing (who works within the dental office) is being displayed instead of the actual dental office's listing. Also, the dentist's name on the Google Places listing is being swapped out by Google with the name of the dental office, but if you click through to the Google Places listing, it shows the name of the individual Dentist. Anyone encounter a similar issue or have any other theories besides the Google Places issue?

Impact of 401s on Site Rankings
Will having 401s on a site negatively impact rankings? (e.g. 401s thrown from a social media sharing icon)
