My site has been dropping, not sure why!
-
My site has been dropping in the rankings, not sure - my metrics seem better than my competitors. Historically I have been a very stable #2 for my main term, but now it's down to 7!
According to SEO Moz, my domain authority is 32, while my better performing competitors are are 26, 11, and 1! Have more links than they do. Trying to think it through, not sure what is happening. My home page bounces at a low 20%-ish, other Google Analytics are good. I have a company Facebook account, occasionally upload YouTube vids, do online press releases, etc. I do have to target several metros scattered across the state, while my competitors usually focus on one major metro.
I do have some SEO Moz errors, which focus on dup content due to our web editor's naming system. An example would be domain.com/keyword-keyword-i-14 vs. domain/differnet keyword-different better keyword-i-14. 14 would be the actual page number. Our system lets me change the page title keywords, as I've added new links and pages over the years there are some dupes.
The only major change is I've added a password protected section for sales rep materials. The hosting/web guru firm we use has assured me Google doesn't see pages behind the password portection.
Not sure if Google is testing a new SERP formula. All social media or non-website results seem to have dropped out of search for my terms. Just local business sites like mine and some directory sites remain.
Any advice or private consult would be greatly appreciated as I am a ... self taught 'OneManBand' for high tech marketing in our company.
Thanks

Thanks for the detailed info, I'm going to check it all out and then post and update.

In Open Site Explorer, click on the Top Pages tab. It should be a list of every page OSE knows about on your site, in order of Page Authority. Under status code, anything that says 404 is a missing file or an incorrect link.
In GWT, on your site dashboard, there will be a Crawl Errors section in the top right. There might be an entry labeled "Not Found." If so, click on it and you'll be given a list of pages giving a 404 error to Google's spiders.
The solution is to either fix the incorrect links if they're under your control, or implement a 301 redirect if the links are not under your control.
- Read more about redirects here: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection
- More info on how redirects work: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/url-rewrites-and-301-redirects-how-does-it-all-work
I'll write a different entry regarding the traffic, but this one hopefully answers how to fix any 404 errors on the site.

Since this happened, my growth in vists has become flat with last year (Google Analytics). I had been way up in visits all year. I see the same new, lower ranking on several different PCs checked at different locations.
And I'm going with the errors reported thru SEOmoz
Can you give me more advice on using OpenSite Explorer and Webmaster Tools?

Has your traffic dropped, or just your rankings?
Are you going off of your SEOMoz dashboard-reported rankings, or what shows up when you search on your own computer?
None of the stuff you mentioned sounds like it would cause issues. The part in paragraph 3 concerns me - if you've been changing the URLs frequently over the years be sure to make sure you have 301 redirects in place for any pages that are showing a 404 error. Log into OpenSiteExplorer and Google Webmaster Tools to find where those are showing up.

When does updating site content affect SERPS?
Can any of you shine a light as to when updating content on a website had any effect on its 'general' placement in the search engines? I appreciate that for an online newspaper, it must be important, but has anyone noticed from theirs or a client's site that by not uploading i.e. product descriptions or articles in general, that their site has taken a hit?

Canonical in Shop Areas of an E-commerce Site. When and Where?
Hi Guys. A quick one about duplicate content... So we have a lot of pages that are very similar on our site, but are actually different products. e.g) Our Fortnight view refills and our week to view refills. Our MOZ report defines this as duplicate content. Question: Would a canonical tag be the way to go to 'remove' this duplicate content? And if so, which page should it point back to? Just picking one of the products? Or the higher level Landing page? Many thanks in advance... Isaac.

SEO for multilingual and multiregional site seperated with subdirectories on same domain
Hi all, I am working on a website that is multilingual and multiregional.
On-Page Optimization | | helgeolaussen
The site is on a single TDL where the countries are seperated with subdirectories.
I am only working with SEO for one country, so just one of the subdirectories.
Do you guys have any tips on important stuff to remember when doing SEO for this site?
Any pros or cons for this? Ty0 -

Duplicate content harms individual pages or whole site?
Hi, One section of my site is a selection of Art and Design books. I have about 200 individual posts, each with a book image and a description retrieved from Amazon (using their API). Due to several reasons not worth mentioning I decided to use the Amazon description. I don't mind if those pages rank well or not, but I need them as additional content for my visitors as they browse my site. The value relies in the selection of books. My question is if the duplicate content taken from Amazon harms only each book page or the whole site. The rest of the site has unique content. Thanks! Enrique

On-Site Optimization and Repeat Customers
Hello, One of my clients has repeat customers. All of his surface level categories are optimized. None of his 2nd or 3rd level categories are optimized at all. Is there any harm in optimizing these 2nd or 3rd level categories. Is there any way it could cause a problem with repeat customers? I didn't think so but I want to make sure. Thanks!

Best practice for franchise sites with duplicated content
I know that duplicated content is a touchy subject but I work with multiple franchise groups and each franchisee wants their own site, however, almost all of the sites use the same content. I want to make sure that Google sees each one of these sites as unique sites and does not penalize them for the following issues. All sites are hosted on the same server therefor the same IP address All sites use generally the same content across their product pages (which are very very important pages) *templated content approved by corporate Almost all sites have the same design (A few of the groups we work with have multiple design options) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Again Aaron

Different names for Twitter/Facebook, and site?
Greetings, I want to optimize my site, www.atstrust.com. I know that posts to Facebook and Twitter help improve ranks. Does it matter though if my twitter/facebook sites have a different name than the domain I am optimizing? For example, my Facebook site is facebook.com/easyinspection. I assume that doesn't matter as long as the URLs on the site refer to my domain? Thanks! Eric
