Does Open Site Explorer violate Google's Terms of service?

According to Google's Webmaster Guidelines:

"Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service."

Does that mean Open Site Explorer is a violation of those Terms of Service, or is it authorized?

I'm sorry - I meant to ask the question about the Rank tracker tool that you provide.

Don't get me wrong, I love these tools - I was just surprised when I read that in the Guidelines.

Hi Eric,

Open Site Explorer doesn't use Google at all, it uses our own crawl of the web which we call the Linkscape index. Hope that helps!

Open Site Explorer backlink results different that MajesticSEO... why?

When checking the number of external links linking to a site, Open Site Explorer and MajesticSEO give completely different results. In one case Open Site Explorer is saying the website has: "49 Total Links" and MajesticSEO is saying the website has: "6,143 External Backlinks (in the last 5 years)" and "497 External Backlinks (in the last 90 days)" Does anyone know why this is?

In Site Explorer My Blog.URL.com Shows "No Data Available for this URL"

Why when I use http://www.opensiteexplorer.org and I'm researching our Blog.URL.com's does the tool say "No Data Available for this URL"? Example: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=blog.centurypayments.com

Alexa Ranking Sites

I found these two sites giving my competitor link juice: http://www.webnamelist.com/alexa/Alexa_186.html http://www.list-of-domains.org/alexa/Alexa_185.html I have seen these sites before and I just dont get why they are authoritative. The funny thing is I did a search for my competitors link on the page and its not showing up, is this a problem in site explorer? Why is site explorer mentioning these sites as my competitions best links when these links do not exist on their site?

How many of my linked pages should I redirect (301's)

I'm moving my store to a new site and will have a much friendlier but completely different URL structure. I used Open Site Explorer to find inbound links to 513 pages and have done about half so far. The remaining pages have one link each at a page authority of 27 or less - but there are still 250+ of them. I have to manually view each old page, search for the product on the new site, and enter the redirect as there is no way to translate old URL's to new ones. How important is it for rankings to redirect the remaining 250 or so pages?

Link Diagnosis and Open Site Explorer

I work at a web design firm that's starting to offer SEO to its clients. They want to keep costs down until the SEO side becomes more established, so I've been using mostly free tools to do the SEO. I've been using a website called LinkDiagnosis.com to check backlinks for clients. It says the data is provided by SEOmoz, so I thought it must be pretty reliable. However, I just signed up for the PRO trial to test out all of SEOmoz's tools (& hopefully convince my company to sign us up), and I find that the link information between the 2 tools can be vastly different! Sometimes the number of unique linking domains is very close, but other times it can be off by hundreds, even thousands, with Open Site Explorer typically providing the higher numbers. Is the Link Diagnosis tool really powered with data from SEOmoz, or does it just receive a portion of the data, since it's a free tool? I'm just trying to figure out what will be the most reliable solution for me to keep using, and the discrepancies between the two tools has caused me to question the reliability of both. How accurate is Open Site Explorer?

I noticed for one of my sites, a large number of links do not show up in Open Site Explorer, including some of my stronger links. That being the case, how much weight can I put on using these tools to compare sites? I'm not trying to bash here, I really like the tools but if my PA is 29 and my competition is 34, how much weight can I put on these numbers? Or if it says my site has 50 links from 25 domains and my competition has 60 links from 30 domains, these numbers obviously aren't very accurate? So how much weight can I put on these comparisons? Are there better tools?
