Jquery for Header
-
Hi, I am using a Header template designed in jQuery, its having a small script. i woud like to know is there any bad impact on the website if I use Jquery. Thanks.

Exactly Jonathon, but preferably in other less noted sections of the site.

Jquery calls elements using JavaScript(JS). Search crawlers will therefore have great difficulty accessing content wrapped in JS. If you had jquery embedded in different elements of the site, then I would see only this as a minimal issue. However since you are using jquery as part of your header template, this might impact how search engine crawlers potentially access your sites navigation, including deeper level pages. If you are still keen on using jquery, I would suggest the following tips when maximizing the search engine friendliness (SEF) of your site: 1. Reduce the number of html tags for Jquery, as much as possible. You want to make sure crawlers not only access the navigation effectively, but the pages meta data (usually located in the sites header). 2. Use tags to dynamically trigger events instead of blank onclick anchor tags. 3. Always contain a html version of a page. If Javascript is disabled for a browser, I should be able to see the HTML content. 4. Externalise JS files - This not only improves site speed, but helps crawlers focus on other more important content. To see whether or not your site might be impacted from JS or Jquery, you should disable JS on your browser and make UX observations. You should also look Google's cached version of the page and note any differences. Hope this helps, Vahe

No don't worry, you can have small animations in Jquery. The important thing is that the navigation, the content,... is not into the jquery script.

Header/Menu Links
Hey there, I seem to have heard mixed results on this. We have a LOT of pages that we are trying to tell google are important. Does it make that big of a difference if those pages are linked in the homepage/header menu? Or mega menu for example? We are essentially a review site, so we potentially have thousands of links that could be implemented into the menu. Thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Ecommerce site Header tag compulsory to follow till h6?
Hello Experts? Header tags for homepage, category, product pages is it required to be have from h1 till h6? If No...then w3c validator will give me Warning and it will never Pass my site so? Do google say h1, h2, h3..etc should be in sequence only? As per my site design I cannot define h1 always on top it can be after h2 or h3 so? h1 can be only 1 for per page but it is fine h2, h3 etc multiple for same page? At listing page to give all 30 products names as h3 is fine or it is not correct way? For ecommerce site what is the best header tags you suggest? I mean till h3 is fine or h1 also fine? Do header tags helps google in crawling ? or for ranking purpose? or header tags should be best for blog not for ecommerce site? Thanks!

True or False? Having your phone number in the header of your nav bar is good for SEO?
I have been told by a a few different SEO and Marketing Agency friends that by putting your address and phone number in the top section of your navbar is great for SEO. Does this myth have any merit or is it just misguided? Tksac28

Crosslinking Question - Footer or Header?
We own 9 fashion blogs that focus on different niches. We have Your Next Shoes focusing on shoes, Your Next Dress focusing on dresses, Your Next Handbag focusing on handbags, and so on. Previously we had links in the blog header to the other sister sites. Your Next Shoes had text links to its 8 sister sites, and so on. However, we were told that this could cause a cross-linking penalty, so we removed these links. My understanding now is that the advice we were given is not necessarily correct. We think it is useful for our visitors to see that we also operate other blogs, so we are thinking of adding back the links - this time to our footer. Basically I am looking for advise on the best way to go about this.

Recommendation: Add a canonical URL tag referencing this URL to the header of the page.
Please clarify: In the page optimization tool, seomoz recommends using the canonical url tag on the unique page itself. Is it the same canonical url tag used when want juice to go to the original page? Although the canonical URL tag is generally thought of as a way to solve duplicate content problems, it can be extremely wise to use it on every (unique) page of a site to help prevent any query strings, session IDs, scraped versions, licensing deals or future developments to potentially create a secondary version and pull link juice or other metrics away from the original. We believe the canonical URL tag is a best practice to help prevent future problems, even if nothing is specifically duplicate/problematic today. Please give example.

Does Google index dynamically generated content/headers, etc.?
To avoid dupe content, we are moving away from a model where we have 30,000 pages, each with a separate URL that looks like /prices/<product-name>/<city><state>, often with dupe content because the product overlaps from city to city, and it's hard to keep 30,000 pages unique, where sometimes the only distinction is the price & the city/state.</state></city></product-name> We are moving to a model with around 300 unique pages, where some of the info that used to be in the url will move to the page itself (headers, etc.) to cut down on dupe content on those unique 300 pages. My question is this. If we have 300 unique-content pages with unique URL's, and we then put some dynamic info (year, city, state) into the page itself, will Google index this dynamic content? The question behind this one is, how do we continue to rank for searches for that product in the city-state being searched without having that info in the URL? Any best practices we should know about?

Reducing the site's header to get more content Above the Fold
The user bizzer posted the following question on the post (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/guide-to-ads😞 "I've got my above the fold area very light on advertising since Panda. But reading #4 about the "template" makes me wonder if I should go further and reduce the height of my header area and maybe even remove one of my two sidebars, so as to increase the content-to-template ratio above the fold. Make sense?" What do you think?

# hidden by the header?
Can someone please clarify whether hiding tags behind the image header is an accepted best practice or is frowned upon by Google? I was doing some competitive analysis and noticed some websites were doing it, but it certainly wasn't egregious.
