How to find all banklinks for a URL that forwards to a main URL
-
I have a client (yea! my second one doing seo) who has a law firm. He has a main site and then another site that just forwarded to his main website.
He wants to find all the directories (and other places on the web) where his second site is listed. At the time when he was adding his firm into the directories, he was using his secondary url but now he wants to go back and use his main website.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have a log of every place he added himself.
I tried just searching Google for "mysecondarywebsite.com" (in quotes)for example but the SERPS return listings that aren't right.
Suggestions?

Heyo,
I'd start with OSE and export the data compare it to GWT "Your Site on the Web" tab (specifically the Internal Links as well as the Links to your Site).
Then take a trip down to good old:
This is a great way to analyze Second Tier Links if the first site contains links with the secondary URL. Also consider analyze the anchor text with this process. Will probably take a bit of elbow grease, but this is a good start.
Good Luck and good on ya!

The link operator is fairly limited. I would suggest pulling the external referring domain report for Majestic or if you are an SEOmoz pro member, use OSE's in combination with GWT external link reports to pull the list of sites.
However to be honest you will not be able to get all of these results as most of them might be removed or so low value that it wouldn't get picked up by these tools.
Hope this helps,
Vahe

Give the "link:" operator a try, or see if OSE has any data. I'd say use GWT, but I'm assuming since it's just a forward there isn't an account set up.

Unsure about main menu structure on a big magazine site
We've got a well-established Wordpress magazine-type site with over 3000 posts and quite a lot of categories (100) and tags (117). These categories are needed as we write about quite a diverse subject, but I've been having a look at our current menu setup (megaMenu type affair with a lot of links) and I was wondering whether it's worth moving to a simpler/more streamlined main navigation and showing the sub menu items in a different way. The reason I say this is most cats/tags are used in the main menu which is a lot, and that's before any on page links are taken into consideration. I've also been looking at the analytics and seeing what the most popular cats/tags are - Do we want to concentrate on those only, or from a usability perspective should we give users as many options to find what they may be looking for instead? Would appreciate some help to get my head round this 🙂

Will removing a 301 re-direct from an old spammed URL drop the links from our profile?
Essentially there is an old page that has been the target of an old school link building agency. There is a 301 re-direct from the old page to the newer version. if I drop the 301 re-direct and update our sitemaps. Will those links be removed from our profile? The old URL passes nothing in actual value & a link building campaign has been running on the new page for over a year.

Will 404-ing a URL neutralise any bad incoming links?
We're cleaning up one of our sites which was affected by Penguin. If we rename an example page1.html (which has 400 bad incoming links) to page2.html (with no 301 redirects), will Google disregard the poor links entirely? So, page1.html will return a 404 page. Many thanks for your help. James P.S. I am aware that we may lose any positive link juice from any 'good' links which come in to page1.html.

Are In bound links to a Custom URL ineffective
Hi All, I would like to know what would achieve the best inbound link ranking from google. I have to run an inbound link campaign and have to choose between two options: Option 1, get people to link directly to the home page or Option 2, get people to link to a custom url (for example, www.domain.com/index.aspx?dealer1455) the custom url has a function to hide certain menu items on the home page. Also The custom url ID number will also change for each person that links to us. So in effect each link is directed to an individual custom URL. My preference is option 1. But a number of the people linking to us would prefer to link to a custom home page that has their competitors details hidden. At the end of the day the decision needs to be made on what will provide our site with the best rankings in the serps What option is best to improve search engine rankings ? Many Thanks in advance
