Another deduplication question.

Where an existing website has duplicate content issues - specifically the www. and non-www. type; what is the most effective way to inform the searchers and spiders that there is only one page?
I have a site where the ecommerce software (Shopfitter 4) allows a fair bit of meta data to be inserted into each product page but I am uncertain, after a couple of attempts to deduplicate some pages, which is the most effective way to ensure that the www related duplication is eliminated sitewide - there is such a solution.
I have to own up to having looked at
,htaccess
301 redirects
webmaster tools
and become increasingly bamboozled by the conflicting advice as to which is the most effective way or combination to get rid of this problem. too olod to learn new tricks I reckon
Your help and clarification would be appreciated as this may help head off more fruitless work.

no. the rewrite rule will apply to all URLs

Quick tip:
Usually you can just contact your Hosting company and ask them to do the 301 redirect for you if you feel uneasy tampering with code on the server.

BTW, my answer is for a Apache server.... This means don't use it if its Microsoft...

Here we go:
Just input following to .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L](replace example withyour site
)This should do the trick for the whole site.

Blimey gustav - that was quick. In the htaccess do you need to specify each separtae page url or is there a way of setting it site wide?

Hi there!
Use An 301 redirect you can do this in hte .htaccess file.
Submit xml sitemap to Google webmaster tools with the correct adress(with www)
You will soon be rid of the duplicated pages if you do this.

We decided to go through our backlinks and realized that many domains we are disavowing currently (under Since we are moving to SSL I understand Google looks at this as a new site. Therefore, is it ok to create a new disavow file with the new profile on GW (ssl version of our site)? Also, is it ok the new GW disavow file doesn't include urls we previously disavowed with the non https version? Some links from the old disavow we found were disavowed but they shouldn't have been. Canonical questions
Hi, We are working on a site that sells lots of variations of a certain type of product. (Car accessories) So lets say there are 5 products but each product will need a page for each car model so we will potentially have a lot of variations/pages. As there are a lot of car models, these pages will have pretty much the same content, apart from the heading and model details. So the structure will be something like this; Product 1 (landing page) Audi (model selection page)

As all of these pages could look very similar to search engines, will simply setting up each with a canonical be enough? Is there anything else we should do to ensure Google doesn't penalise for duplicate page content? Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome.

Please help with serp placment question?
We own discount banner printing and we are trying to rank 1 for pvc banners or vinyl banners and cannot understand for example how the below is correct, we did suffer a link penalty years ago but we fixed this and the domain has some good links (more and better quality than the sites above us) and cannot understand how we rank below most of the sites above us? Bizarre iframes question
I've been asked to do an audit of http://www.equipment4garages.com/. The first thing I did was check the code, and saw that the whole thing has a clone of the original site in an iframe. I can't for the life of me think why anybody would do that, so I was wondering if someone here could shed some light on it?

Newbie question about long tail keywords
I am a little confused as to how search engines see and rank keywords. Let me explain. If I have a fairly long tail keyword such as "buy natural progesterone cream uk" will the search engine also break this up into smaller parts such as "buy natural progesterone uk"," buy progesterone cream uk", "natural progesterone uk" and so on or will it only see the words that are next to each other like "progesterone cream uk". Also where does cannibalization come into this? I really appreciate any help I can get with this that furthers my understanding. Thanks.

Canonical tag question
Suppose a site has two pages ( Page A ) and Page B. Both of them have pagerank, but duplicate content. The page A is ranked for keyword "seo india" and page B is ranked for keyword "seo services". If i implement canonical tag on page B, does 1. The pagerank of page B will be transfered to Page A ? 2. Does the site A now ranks for keyword "seo servicies " ( for which Page B was ranking earlier )

Question regarding **and <bold>tags</bold>**
I've read that these 2 tags both carry equal weight for seo purposes but in my opinion it looks a little spammy when you see keywords in bold type face scattered over your site. So will they still carry the same weight for seo if I applied a class to them that turned them back to normal?
