Duplicate Content issue on pages with Authority and decent SERP results
-
Hi, I'm not sure what the best thing to do here is.
I've got quite a few duplicate page errors in my campaign. I must admit the pages were originally built just to rank a keyword variation.
e.g. Main page keyword is [Widget in City] the "duplicate" page is [Black Widget in City]
I guess the normal route to deal with duplicate pages is to add a canonical tag and do a 304 redirect yea? Well these pages have some page Authority and are ranking quite well for their exact keywords, what do I do?

Just thought I would update the results on this.
After taking PoolGuy's advice I 301'd the duplicate pages to their main pages, i.e.
[Black Widget in City] ->301-> [Widget in City]
Now almost every single main page has moved up on average 12 places to #1 on google!
The duplicate pages are still showing in the SERPs but appear to be dropping and I guess will eventually dissapear.
So I'm now a staunch promoter of dealing with duplicate content!

I would predict you will continue to rank well for your duplicate pages. I further predict they (because of Panda) will bring down the rankings of the rest of your site. If you can add some good unique content to 50 different colors of a product, then by all means, make 50 pages. But if you can't generate the content necessary to establish each individual page as "quality", then I would remove them, and simply not go that route at all, and 301 redirect all those pages into the main page. If you think it still holds value to users, then keep them up and just use a canonical tag.

Hi There
From what you've described, it does sound like Duplicate Content is a potential issue for your site, it's great that you're addressing it.
A Canonical Tag as you've suggested is a logical and sensible course of action. Correctly implemented, this will certainly help.
One thought, what would provide the best user experience for your visitors? Have a think about whether these 'additional' pages actually add any value or not for your visitors. I suspect that you could include every different color of a certain type of widget on a single page for each type, rather than having separate pages for each color.
In this scenario, consider 301 redirecting those additional/duplicate pages to the main appropriate widget page, that would almost certainly provide a cleaner better user experience. Obviously need to take into account your business objectives and target audience goals when making such a decision.
So really, it's Canonicals or 301s, depending on what best matches your business objectives and the user experience.
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Will I be flagged for duplicate content by Google?
Hi Moz community, Had a question regarding duplicate content that I can't seem to find the answer to on Google. My agency is working on a large number of franchisee websites (over 40) for one client, a print franchise, that wants a refresh of new copy and SEO. Each print shop has their own 'microsite', though all services and products are the same, the only difference being the location. Each microsite has its own unique domain. To avoid writing the same content over and over in 40+ variations, would all the websites be flagged by Google for duplicate content if we were to use the same base copy, with the only changes being to the store locations (i.e. where we mention Toronto print shop on one site may change to Kelowna print shop on another)? Since the print franchise owns all the domains, I'm wondering if that would be a problem since the sites aren't really competing with one another. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Why does my home page show up in search results instead of my target page for a specific keyword?
I am using Wordpress and am targeting a specific keyword..and am using Yoast SEO if that question comes up.. and I am at 100% as far as what they recommend for on page optimization. The target html page is a "POST" and not a "Page" using Wordpress definitions. Also, I am using this Pinterest style theme here http://pinclone.net/demo/ - which makes the post a sort of "pop-up" - but I started with a different theme and the results below were always the case..so I don't know if that is a factor or not. (I promise .. this is not a clever spammy attempt to promote their theme - in fact parts of it don't even work for me yet so I would not recommend it just yet...) I DO show up on the first page for my keyword.. however.. instead of Google showing the page www.mywebsite.com/this-is-my-targeted-keyword-page.htm Google shows www.mywebsite.com in the results instead. The problem being - if the traffic goes only to my home page.. they will be less likely to stay if they dont find what they want immediately and have to search for it.. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Duplicate content issue for franchising business
Hi All We are in the process of adding a franchise model to our exisitng stand alone business and as part of the package given to the franchisee will be a website with conent identical to our existing website apart from some minor details such as contact and address details. This creates a huge duplicate content issue and even if we implement a cannonical approach to this will still be unfair to the franchisee in terms of their markeitng and own SEO efforts. The url for each franchise will be unique but the content will be the same to a large extend. The nature of the service we offer (professional qualificaitons) is such that the "products" can only be described in a certain way and it will be near on in impossible to have a unique set of "product" pages for each franchisee. I hope that some of you have come across a similar problem or that some of you have suggestions or ideas for us to get round this. Kind regards Peter

How do I fix the error duplicate page content and duplicate page title?
On my site www.millsheating.co.uk I have the error message as per the question title. The conflict is coming from these two pages which are effectively the same page: www.millsheating.co.uk www.millsheating.co.uk/index I have added a htaccess file to the root folder as I thought (hoped) it would fix the problem but I doesn't appear to have done so. this is the content of the htaccess file: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^millsheating.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.millsheating.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.html\ HTTP/ RewriteRule ^index\.html$ http://www.millsheating.co.uk/ [R=301,L] AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
