What should I get my assistant to do? (SEO wise, no real results!)
-
We own a video search site like casttv.com, now there is not much 'content' we can develop. I want to rank high for certain video names for Google.
In terms of seo, i have told our assistant (seo guy now) to basically find all sites on the net related to videos and collect their about us and contact them, and see if we can build any sort of partnership and also to post a new interesting article a day for our blog... He has contacted 500 sites of which we were able to get good links from 5 of them (1 way). He has exhausted his search of quality 'video' sites, now what? what can I have him do so we can actually start ranking, we have 100k pages indexed of which we have around 1million.
Only the top pages are allowed to be indexed, in terms of off page seo, what can I have our seo guy do all day now? should I fire him ($3k a month) and get a PR firm to try to get us into newspapers instead?

Honestly, if SEO is important to your business I think you may want to hire a SEO, rather than trying to have your assistant do it. I don't mean to sound harsh, but that could be your first failure point.
Ultimately the first step in linkbuilding is to answer the question "Why should a site link to you, and not any other equivalent sites?"
This is where the content creation comes from -- giving people a reason to link to you, a reason you're site is unique and awesome, authoritative or entertaining or whatever makes you stand apart. Then you do your outreach. If you got step 1 down, you should get a lot more than 1 out of every 100 related sites to link to you.

ok casttv.com is not a good example. think of it as a content site for video, perhaps think ebaumsworld.com

HI Ketlad,
I'm not 100% sure on your model, but it seems pretty much like a Huffington Post, which is take others content and regurgitate it? If so Egol has a point to a degree which is, you're dealing with big names and little control over what content is generated. If Hulu or Youtube post a video sure you may have a page for it, but if somebody is already at their site why would they go to yours to watch it?
I understand there are a crap ton of video sites, most of which I personally would never visit unless they had something nobody else had and I was pointed to the site by another person. That said, it should provide some insight as to what you can do. Try to understand why people go to these types of sites and what you can do to fill those desires. Additionally getting the word out about your site can be done by visiting forums and blogs and posting (not spamming) links to videos that may interest the community you are engaging with. Granted 3k to post links on a forums and blogs per month sounds like a lot but if your assistant uses the correct approach it could certainly bring traffic.
If you have the resources, skills and knowledge to understand why people use X site, and you can fulfill those desires and even make it better then you could do really well. You may have to take things to the next level, maybe a virtual museum that a person can design, and take people on tours of their favorite videos.. I know few sites are doing this with Pictures now, surely videos would be better. Anything you can do to put some power in the users hands give them control over what they see how they see it, and what they can do with it, would be a plus.
That is just my thoughts I hope it helps.

thanks

Being absolutely honest... and this is only my opinion...
I think that you have a business model where you don't have enough resources to be competitive against other similar sites who have invested $10 million or more and have a ten year head start. So give the assistant ten weeks pay and let him use the time to find a new job.

How to lay off your SEO compnay?
I have decided to replace my seo company. The pint is this company has been partly my developer too. So he has set up a demo server of my website. 1- Should I be worried about duplicate material when I end my cooperation with this company(The demo server) 2- Should I be worried that if they do not like it, they go and delete all the submitted materials and destroy my pages rankings? Thanks all

Google + pages and SEO results...
Hi, Can anyone give me insight into how people are getting away with naming their business by the SEO search term, creating a BS Google + page, then having that page rank high in the search results. I am speaking specifically about the results you get when you Google: "Los Angeles DUI Lawyer". As you can see from my attached screenshot (I'm doing the search in Los Angeles), the FIRST listing is a Google + business. Strangely, the phone number listed doesn't actually take you to a DUI attorney, but rather to some marketing group that never answers the phone. Can anyone give me insight into why Google even allows this? I just find it odd that Google cares so much about the user experience, but have the first result be something completely misleading. I know it sounds like I'm just jealous (which I am, a little), but I find it disheartening that we work so hard on SEO, and someone takes the top spot with an obvious BS page. UupqBU9

SEO - I just do not seem to get it
Hello All, I came to the forum two weeks ago and prior to that studied SEO until my brain almost melted two weeks before. Now, I've read some great articles here on SEOMoz which have been fantastic. Mainly being this one: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo. So anyway, I genuinely throught I got it about a week ago. Here's what I did: First I decided on my keyword: "PC Repair Sheffield". Then, I made a website and on-page optimizaed as best as I possibly could (Graded A on the SEOMoz on-page exam tool). So I decided firstly to add myself to the Independant newspaper Business Directory, because it's free and has a great domain authority. I then went to Yahoo answers, found a Question i knew the answer too and made a whole article on the question, I provided a really useful answer and put a link to my full answer in the 'Source' section. This was a NoFollow Link. Every week, I write a new article and put it in my 'Blog' page. In the articles, I like to cover some problem that I've encountered throughout the week, if, for example, I write about a Hard Drive I replaced in Sheffield, I write about that and link it to my 'PC Repair Sheffield' page. Every article contains a video from Youtube, which is another 'NoFollow' link. Past that, I just find forums which are preffereably not 'No Follow' links and try to help people by answering their questions, but putting more details on my site for them toi see, with a link. That is pretty much the extent of what I 'Get' so far. But I do read a lot of the posts on here and I'm always seeing the Experts on SEO criticise these things and say it's bad without actually explaining why, or how to improve this, or what to do instead in some kind of simple way? I mean, this blog i'm writing, is there really any point? It's unlikely anybody is going to see it, sharing it is just a rediculous assumption. Nobody shares a page on how to fix a hard drive from a local sheffield site. I don't think that NoFollow links are a waste of time, but that's my personal assumption. I think that makes it more natural in a way.. 'Write Fresh Content' and get natural links is a crazy suggestion, nobody is ever going to share it. It's just not the way the world works for small businesses. No task is easy, but none are impossible either, i know that I could do SEO, i'm just not entirely sure 'what to do'.

How do we get individual products to rank ?
Hi, We have a site that sells music and we have been researching SEO and things we can do to help SERPs. We have started on link building and have added links to the footer of our page We have friendly urls, meta tag description added to all products. My question is, Yes we can work on getting keywords to rank better in google, one of ours being buy cds. But when it comes to individual products these keywords and results are useless if people are searching for a CD by artist or title which most do as they know what they are looking for. How do i get better results for all these unique products ? One or more of our competitors constantly show up in first few results for nearly any CD search by artist or title, yet we cant seem to get anywhere near this type of result ? Thanks Chris

Indirect SEO boost from links
I have 2 ecommerce sites, each with a blog. I am increasing my linkbuilding efforts, but I don't want to build too many links directly to my 2 sites over a short period of time. I have decided that I will add a certain number of links to sites/pages that are already linking to my main sites (for example, a blog post on my blog, guest post on another blog, article submission, etc.). How much of a benefit can I expect in terms of rankings? Has anyone tested this out or experimented with something like this? What are the pros and cons? I appreciate thoughtful comments.

Could Sub domains damage our SEO?
Hi there, We're currently looking into integrating a new internal search function to our site which will involve housing the search results on a sub domain of our site. We have no intention of these search result pages becoming landing pages for organic traffic but would the inclusion of a sub domain affect the optimization of the main domain? i.e. could it effect our authority? RSS feeds- What are the secrets to getting them, and the links inside then, indexed and counted for SEO purposes?
RSS feeds, at least on paper, should be a great way to build backlinks and boost rankings. They are also very seductive from a link-builder's point of view- free, easy to create, allows you to specifiy anchor text, etc. There are even several SEO articles, anda few products, extolling the virtues of RSS for SEO puposes. However, I hear anecdotedly that they are extremely ineffective in getting their internal links indexed. And my success rate has been abysmal- perhaps 15% have ever been indexed, and so far, I havenever seem Google show an RSS feed as a source for a backlink. I have even thrown some token backlinks against RSS feeds to see if that helped in getting them indexed, but even that has a very low success rate. I recently read a blog post saying that Google "hates aRSS feeds" and "rarely spiders perhaps the first link or two." Yet there are many SEO advocates who claim that RSS feeds are a great untapped resource for SEO. I am rather befuddled. Has anyone "crackedthe code" onhow to get them, and the links that they contain, indexed and helping rankings?
