Will deleting excess self serving links from old posts damage established ranking
-
My SEOmoz report showed many posts with "too many links."
I can easily go back into wordpress and delete self serving links. But is there a downside to this if these posts are already ranked well on google search for the desired key words?
Or will deleting the excess self serving links improve ranking

Here's a post from Dr. Pete on SEOmoz about the 100 link warning and the subject in general.

up untill recently the limit google talked about was 100, but recently Matt Cutts has said that they can handle more then that.
Every time a link passes PageRank, only 85% is passed, they do this so page rank does not pass thought links in eternal loops. but even passing only 85% we never get to 0, there is always 85% of something left. So thee must be a cut off point when the number gets too small to pass. now if you had so many links on a page that the PR was dived up so small that it did not make that cut off point, then the page would pass no PR. So therre is a limit but thet depends on the PR a page has and what the cutt off point is.
Bing has a hard limit of 250

Thank you. Why did the SEOmoz report flag as too many links? I guess they define too many as over 100.
The problem is they define a page as a category that could have 10 or 15 different posts in a month. Should I just ignore the issue?
-
130 links is not too much. Bing will index 250, and google there is no set limit.

I am concerned that the posts that I link to will drop in ranking. These are internal links to relevant pages within my own site=self serving posts.
Some were above the fold (I was inexperienced when I did this).
My average blog article is 600-700 words. In some that SEOmoz flagged - were a series of 8 posts or articles written in one category over a period of one month which had a total of 130 self serving links
-
Thank you. My SEOmoz report flagged one category on my blog during one month which had 130 internal links spread over 15 posts or articles.
Where does the 250 limit apply as I was flagged for having at most 10 per artcile although some were above the fold

In my opinion...
It really depends on the context. Are you worried that the posts you remove the links on will drop rankings, or that the pages/posts they link TO will drop?
What I mean is, are the links from your posts going out to pages that you wish to get to rank? If so, are they ranking?
Or, are you cross-linking, post to post?
As an example, roughly how many links are on each post, and how many (average) words per post?
In general, I don't like to link out too much from posts, as the 'juice' passed by each link will be less, and it can look spammy.
If you pull several outbound internal links from a selection of posts, it may be wise to plan it so that not all the links point to the same pages(s), so that across the board, no single page gets a drastic drop in internal links.
Another possible tactic (taking into account, and agreeing with, what Alan said below), is that you could also pull any links that go out to pages you are not as bothered about, if you have any such outbound links on your posts. Perhaps checking your Analytics reports for the best converting pages will help you decide this (being sure to have first touch attribution installed, of course!).
Without an example though, it is kinda hard to give anything other than generic advice...

The same amount of link juice will flow though the links, so redusing the links will mean more will flow thought the links that are left. keep them to 250 or less

How Do I Rank For This Type of Key Word?
Hello, We're a physical therapy practice and rank high for our physical therapy clinic and those type of keywords; however, how do I rank for keywords such as: back pain treatment? herniated disc treatment? We have pages specific to these keywords but aren't ranking. Thoughts?

ECommerce Website Internal Links
We run an ecommerce website... approx 8K products. When using the page grader, MOZ tools consistently tell me that I have too many Internal Links on the page.
On-Page Optimization | | Ampweb
These are caused from our fairly large menu system, and probably from the sub-category links on the category landing pages as well. I was reading an article that mentioned a no-follow on these Internal links would not really solve the "Too many internal links issue", so wanted to check if anyone has ideas or should I just dis-regard this MOZ suggestion that there are too many in this type of environment?0 -
How do you think metatag author will change with google uncoupling them. Will they still affect bing?
With google removing the metag author functionality how do you think metatag author will be used if at all. will functionality change? will it have any use? and should resources being used to implement it? Secondly, will bing utilize it in some way much like they use keywords as a negative signal.

Internal Linking From Blog to Website
Hi all, I'm just seeking opinions on something an external company have told us about linking from our blog to our website... Our website is; www.XYZ.com and our blog is www.XYZ.com/blog I add content to the blog on an almost daily basis and generally link on average 3 times from the blog (internally) to a various relevant pages on our website. Today I was told that by doing this I am 'diluting' the link juice which I understand but don't agree with... All I am doing is a form of internal linking which as far as I am aware is a good on-page technique? Just curious to learn other people's view on this... Many thanks Andy

Page rank question
Hi all, pretty standard SEO question that I'm sure you are all getting asked day in, day out... the following page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/dvd/portable-dvd-player-car/ It's targetting keywords "portable dvd", "portable DVD player", "portable DVD players" & "portable dvd player for car". The page gets a grade A via Moz analytics On-page grader for the keywords. We have incoming links and I believe the page is structured correctly with all meta tags, H1 etc and tried not too overload the tags with keywords. We have the keywords in the URL etc. We are still stuck on page 2 for all phrases. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what we are doing wrong please? Any help would be great.

Wrong Page is Ranking
My client is an Ecommerce reseller of a few major scooter brands. We currently rank fifth for a particular brand name but our main brand page isn't the one that ranks. Instead, it's a product page. The main brand page has an A rating from Moz for the desired keyword phrases. Neither page has any backlinks. Any ideas on why our main brand page would be outranked by a product page? What could we do to change this?

Too many links??
Hi mozzers I have a question that I need some feedback on please, I run 2 websites both e commerce retail sites and both doing well with SEO however, Our strongest site and parent site so to speak links to our sister site. Here is the outline. Site1 parent site is hosted on a unique URL and on a VPS. I have 384 links coming into this site from the other sister site. from various pages Site 2 the sister site, has 68,864 links coming in from site 1 as we have a link in the footer on site 1 to the home page of site 2. So far we have had no adverse affects from the Google zoo releases, however I am concerned that this many links will soon get penalized. Thoughts from anyone please? I am considering removing the footer link, thus removing 68,000 + incoming links. Looking for any advice here please. thanks Ryan

Internal links
Hi, I am working on a project with very few really important pages - its now about 20 pages and this number will not increase to more than 30 by the end of the year. Today the majority of these Pages is 2 clicks away from the Homepage for navigational reasons. Now I am wondering: 1. If I should set links from the Homepage directly to these Pages to pass more juice?
