Should I outsource any SEO work or can I do it all?
-
My website needs a lot of improvement and we are working on it but I also don't want to fall behind on the SEO work. I am guessing that I can do much of it myself through SEOmoz.org but is there a part that busy folks should get others to do?
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Utah Tiger

I think @Axt makes a great point - it's good to learn enough on your own (if you have the time) to understand the basics and build up what you can control. Then, when you're ready to hire someone, you have enough experience to know how to guide them.
The trick with outsourcing (whether foreign or domestic) is to know what you want, specifically. If you just hire a company to "build links", and you don't define what that means, you leave them open to any tactics and any reporting method they choose. They could come back having done virtually nothing, or they could come back having built a network of spam that creates a lot of risk for you. It's fine to ask a company what they'll do and then build the plan from that, but make sure it's all on paper. Don't assume that what they mean by "link-building" and what you mean are the same thing - get it all down and agreed on.

I did it myself and have landed on page one for all my search terms but it's taken a year with several hours a day and is a lot of work. I looked at outsourcing but I'm glad I've done it myself as knowing what I know now I wouldn't trust anyone else to do it for me. If your business relies heavily on internet sales then when hiring an SEO you are putting the success of your business largely in their hands. Personally I wasn't prepared to do that. I've just written a blog post on SEO Moz about my SEO journey so hopefully it will be approved by the moderators and might be worth a read when live.

Thanks everyone....I really appreciate your responses. This was fast feedback! I will be spending some time implementing that advice!
Thanks,
Greg

Hello Greg
First of all you have very nice site:
About 416 pages of your site indexed by Google, but you don't have Blog in your site.Try to make a Blogs and keep adding new posts with fresh content by using your targeted keywords. You can do your on page SEO yourself,by following SeoMoz Campaign suggestions. Try to get back links to your new created pages and posts by submitting articles to high pr directories and blogs by pointing links to them, not only to main page.
On off page optimization, since it takes time, you can outsource to reliable link builders. You can use forums such a Warrior, Digitalpoint or others to find reliable link builders. But before chose them, check their reviews, left by others, ask for example works they have done.

It's good, to start alone to understand the process. Try getting backlinks from your vendors and customers. But when you're at the point, where all your sources are done, get some help from a respected SEO. The money is well spend. And unless you REALLY know what you're doing, there is no fast AND good linkbuilding.

I would say it's like most things, if you can do it yourself then in the long term that might work best.. but then if you don't have time then it can pay to get some help.
Depending on how competetive your sector is, you may be able to pick up some good rankings with good quality content and strong on-page optimisation.
For your initial link building you should start by trying to identify the main sites in your area.. there will likely be some niche directory sites that you can submit to, and that should give you a kick start
One think to be wary of with link building is the types of sites where the links are built and also what happens if you cease working with the company - will these links that have been built stay in place or will they be removed?

Should I work with current site or start a new site with more keywords?
I have been working with my site for some time. Sadly, I am moving lower and lower in ranking. I am wondering if I should just transfer my site to a new URL (this time including keywords). I don't understand the whole disavow link thing. I hired someone about 2 years ago, when I lost my ranking due to malicious software. Well, it turns out that, she submitted my link to weird sites that I don't even know what they are. It is like sites with thousands of websites just listed. Things have never been half of what they were and I am really just growing frustrated. I understand that having an a URL for awhile is helpful, but I appear to have lost many of my good linking sites. Any thoughts?

Is a lot of inbound traffic coming from site a problem for SEO?
We have a site which is going to deliver content to a big news site and in return we will receive a lot of traffic from the news site. Estimates are that it will be about 50% of our daily traffic. Before this we have about 2000 daily visits, where 50% is from organic traffic. How will this affect our rankings? (It should be pretty obvious to Google that an increase like that in reffered traffic is bought - which I assume will ahve a negative impact on our organic rankings) What is the best tactic to use - regarding SEO - if (when) we proceed to deliver content/recieve traffic from that news site? (we have a lot of decent rankings on several branch keywords, and we don't want to risk those rankings. On the other hand - if we could improve our rankings from this deal - we would like inputs to that as well? Best regards, Chris

Creating A Scholarship For SEO
My client is a Law Firm just outside of Tampa, and I am trying to get her keyword phrase: "Tampa Car Accident Attorney" in the top 3. One of the strategies I want to use is to create a scholarship for "Tampa Area Students and how a car accident impacted their life" or "Tampa Area Students and how they think they can decrease car accidents." (that's still be worked on). Once the scholarship is created, I want to put it on our Tampa Car Accident Attorney page, and get other companies to link to that page. My question is what links should we go after? Because that will tailor it to who we give the scholarship to. We could give it to a University of South Florida student, and get one .edu link. We could do the same thing for the University of Tampa, or Stetson Law School, but we'd only be getting one link from each of them. If we set it up for high schoolers, we can get more links from the community and schools, but I'm not sure high school .edu links matter all that much. Is 10 high school .edu links as important as 1 college .edu link? I don't know. If anyone has had an experience with this or any insights, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Real Estate and Vacation Resorts SEO
I am assigned to a few vacation resort sites for SEO plus a Real Estate site. I was hoping to get few suggestions from people that have worked on those fields before. Like good web directories for link building or even some good sites that I should have in mind for comparing mine. Thanks in advance

Value of IMG links for SEO
Hello, I'm looking for some new ways to build links (IE, letitimate not spam), and I know sites featuring a site that I created would be an interesting way to do so. My question is this, the StudioPress Showcase pages http://www.studiopress.com/showcase/baltimore-print-studios link back to your site with an image, with some "Almost URL Alt text". How valuable would this link be, given that the DA is 97 and the PA is in the upper 40s Thanks Zach

Local SEO: Citation Consistency
My company manages local SEO campaigns for local-service SMBs (e.g. plumbers, dentists). One of the things we do is claim and manage directory listings. To provide trackable results, we apply tracking phone numbers to the directory listings, but those phone numbers don't match the phone number listed on the client's site. So we have a problem from a citation consistency standpoint. On the one hand, we'd like everything to be consistent -- business name, address and phone number -- to achieve citation consistency. On the other hand, we want to prove the value of what we're doing by showing the client data from tracked phone calls. Can we provide best-practice Local SEO and Maps Optimization - and achieve citation consistency - even if we're introducing inconsistency by using tracking numbers?

How important are directory submissions to my off-page SEO?
Hi Guys, One area of my link building that I carry out is looking for online directories and social bookmarking websites to submit my website to. I do this in order to gain some backlinks to my website. What I want to know is are they really worth my time, and if so, which types would you say are the most important? I have obviously been through many directory lists, both on SEOmoz and on other websites, and also performed various searches to find relevant directories to my website. I just feel that posting up a link that lies deep in a directory online that, more often than not, have very low PA and lots of outbound links will offer very little in terms of SEO. If anything, this could really bring down the quality of my links and be detrimental to my website, right? This is a subject that I have been thinking about for a while and especially with the recent algorithm update from Google and the attack on many web directories that are, lets say, 'not playing by the rules', I'm worried that this will have a negative impact for my website. Let me know your thoughts guys and if you have any tips on how to get higher quality links from these kind of submission then I'm all ears! Matt.
