Detecting SE traffic on a landing page
-
Hi all,
I am trying to optimize our landing pages in order to getting new visitors to make an action instead of leaving. But in order to so, I need to be able to identify when a user comes from a Google search and when a user does not.
Can anyone help me? The site is written in PHP.
Best regards,
Rasmus

My pleasure. I'll do almost any thing to get a thumbs Up! Im so close to the magic 200 (again).
This is basically doing the same thing and should show you a decent example of how to do it (except they are doing it to tailor adverts to search traffic).
looking over the code on that page, they use an array of values, you could simply replace the values with values such as Google, Yahoo, Bing (ot an exhaustive list by all means!).

Exactly - I want to show some information for the users coming from Google
Great - thank you!

Hi,
I assume you want to do this in code at runtime so you can tailor the page dependant on where the vistor comes from?
In PHP there is a function $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'], this will send the referring url of the visitor. However it is not very reliable and there are many instances where it will contain nothing or incorrect information.
You would then check the contents of the functio results for indicators that they come from a natural search. I.E the referrer contains Bing, Yahoo, Google. This will not differentiate PPC traffic though.
Hope this sets you off in the right direction. (if it does thow a thumbs up my way
)
Cheers

Can you not see the data you need in Google Analytics?
You might be doing this already but you could split test 2 pages using Google Conversion Optimiser and see the results in Google Analytics.
You might find 'crazy egg' heat map service quite useful if you haven't come across it.

Hi Rasmus,
I would do the following: create a goal in Google Analytics (the goal would be "URL Destination" and there you can set the landing page)
In next step go to conversions -> goals -> overview
Now you can set the Advanced Segment to Non-paid Search Traffic.
I hope this was what you were seeking for.
Good luck,
Istvan

What is the best meta description for Category Pages, Tag Pages and Main Article?
Hi, I want to index all my categories and tags. But I fear about duplicating the meta description. for example: I have a tag name "Learn Stock Market", a category name "Learning", and a main article "What is Stock Market". What is your suggestion for meta description of these three pages that looks great for seo google?

We recently updated a large guide that takes the place of the original. The original has some nice organic traffic to it and I don't want to risk losing it. Should I 301 redirect to the new version, or update all the info directly on the original page?
We don't have a lot of content that garners much non-branded organic, so this is something I don't want to risk losing. We do not have a whole lot of external links into the page either.

Wrong page ranking on SERP, above more relevant page
Often I will see the wrong page, something less relevant to a particular search, appear higher on the SERP than a more relevant page. Why does this happen and how can it be remedied? I found this Moz article, has anything been written on this topic more recently. Thanks! https://mza.bundledseo.com/blog/wrong-page-ranking-in-the-results-6-common-causes-5-solutions

Page Layout Updates and Mobile Pages with Ads
I have been trying to do some research on the Page Layout Algorithm and Top Heavy Ads and much of what I read does not mention about mobile pages as apposed to desktop. I am curious if the Page Layout updates can be effected by mobile pages as well and if there is any good articles on this subject. Also is this Algorithm been incorporated into its regular algorithm or do we still have to wait for refreshes to see the impact? Cesar

Wrong sitelinks & landing pages in Google
I've recently launched a well-optimized website with good-content category landing pages and then I've added a blog to the website (as supporting content to the landing pages, the only links pointing to the blog are from the category landing pages) What happened is that Google is now using the Blog pages as the site - sitelinks and also as the landing pages for most keywords I only have inbound links to the reg. landing pages and none to the blog, how do I get Google to change that? I know I can demote sitelink URL's in webmaster tools, but would that help me with getting the right sitelinks, it sure wont help much with the landing pages Thanks

On Page Optmisation for Newbie
Hi All, Literally just signed up - and thought I might be able to dive straight into my pages using the On Site Optimiser to check page, make some changes, then check again and see it have immediate effect on the analysis. Not so? Each time I click on "Grade My On Page Optuimisation" with the expectation that a box formerly with no tick now gets one, nothing changes :o( Chris.

Autogenerated pages
My main product is database conversion software. As it supports tons of databases, it's fairly easy to generate thousands of landing pages simply by variating source/target database names, connection information etc. In fact, I autogenerated almost 25k pages that way. As I didn't want to jeopardize my main site, I placed all that content to a new microsite (www.fullconvert.com) which had no history and no inbound links. Results were nice - site is live two months and in second month already had 1300 visitors. Now, my question is - should I create the same thing on my (old and rather authoritative) main site www.spectralcore.com? I could use a different template to avoid duplicate content. Of course, my main concern is being penalized by Google. In my opinion, this autogenerated content is fine because it provides (tons of) laser-focused landing pages, so visitors will instantly recognize they found what they're looking for. But Google might disagree! What do you think? Is there a danger in trying to leverage authority of my main site in adding 20k+ autogenerated pages with inbound no links to them?
