Should I move my brand under our corporate domain to boost Domain Authority?
-
Dear Community,
I am seeking your expert advice on this situation:
We have these assets as a starting point:
- a long-existing and well-linked Corporate Website (CW) with good metrics,
- a Brand Website (BW) with low/medium metrics,
- and some Brand Competitor (BC) websites with very similar metrics to BW.
We will launch a new version of BW very soon with a well SEOd structure and copy (the old one was not SEOd at all) which I hope itself will bring SERP advantages.
My dilemma emerged after checking the domain level values of our Corporate Website:
- CW / BW / BCs
- Domain Authority: 48 / 28 / 24-27
- Domain mozRank: 4.79 / 3.15 / 2.6-3.25
- Domain mozTrust: 4.73 / 2.79 / 2.47-3.06
My understanding is that based on seoMoz consensus domain level values give about 1/4th of the total pie. Based on these what do you think I should to win over competitors rankings?
- Should I keep running the service under BW (in an neighborhood with nearly identically valued competitors)
- Should I redirect BW to a sub-folder of the Corporate Website? (e.g.www.corporate.com/brand) with 301 redirects and enjoy the advantages of the much better domain values
- Alternatively, I could also build valuable and keyword-optimized content under our CW linking back to our BW.
My understanding is that Option 1 has the least advantages among the three. Option 2 and 3 compete with the following advantages:
- Option 2: We could quickly rank higher as domain values elevate us from the mediocre BW and BC values (offsetting a little loss on 301 redirects)
- Option 3 would allow us to occuppy more positions for the important keywords on SERPs thus attract more "deep-browsing" visitors (and possibly BW could also get some advantages by receiving links from CW)
Which direction would you proceed from here?
Cheers,
Andrew

Whoa boy, that's a long one. There are a few ways to handle this, here's one way that I'd approach it, based off of the info you've given us:
First, if your BW Domain Authority is already at 28, and you're competitors are weighing in at 24 to 27, don't reinvent the wheel. Getting up to 30s or 40s is not that hard with some proactive link building. I would keep the BW on its own site and instead of spending time transferring it to your CW, use that time for link building.
That said, in order to take advantage of your CW's authority, I would still go ahead and add some Brand content to that site, using different copy than what's on the BW. This will naturally be a longer term project, since you're currently focusing on getting the main BW relaunched. But, having two versions that target different keywords is an excellent way to leverage the authority of the CW, and frankly you'll have to recognize that Brand on the CW in some way, right? Might as well make it a ranking subsection of the site, that links to the BW if you like.
Will some of the link value be split between the properties using this method? Yes. BUT, you're already at the front of the pack in terms of competitors from what I can tell, so if you spend more time link building to both BW and CW, you'll reap the benefits. Focus on finishing BW and link building there first. Don't spend you're time with all of the hassles that come with transferring BW to a subfolder of CW.

What is the relationship between inbound links and linking domains?
In doing competitor research, there's a specific competitor that has fewer linking domains, but dramatically more inbound links. How do these two relate to each other? I do have a higher domain authority and more internal followed links with them having more internal nofollow and external (both follow and nofollow) links. I'm trying to understand how they can have 3.7k linking domains and 4.8 million inbound links while I have 4.1k linking domains and only 601k inbound links. What really defines an inbound link and what's there relationship between inbound links and linking domains?

What a Brand should do first for Their Blog Keyword Research or Topic Research?
Hello Moz Community, Need your help guys. What a Brand should do first for their Blog? Keyword Research or Topic Research? Like for the Brand Product page/ eCom Pages, it's quite easy > 1. Buy "Product" Online

2. Buy "Product" "Geo."
3. Product Reviews [for Guest Posting or Reviews]
4. Best "Product" Online and so But, for the blog, it's tough for searching out the keywords that will work if the SEO team or the keyword research team is not aware or don't have the detailed knowledge about the niche they are working on. Please verify: Is it a correct method that an editor should provide a "topic" to the SEO team to find relevant keywords by using a Keyword Research tool that there are enough searches for it which can provide benefits to the blog via the search engine.0 -
How important is a keyword rich domain name for ranking?
I've read that Google has lowered the relevancy of a keyword rich domain name in recent years, but I have a scenario with a client that makes me think otherwise. My client has a particular phrase that they're trying to get rank for and are currently in position 3 of Google. Their primary competitor has position1. Using the Keyword Analysis in Moz Pro, my client has a competitor beat out in Page Authority (45 vs 36), # Root Domains Linking to Page (98 vs 9), Domain Authority (35 vs 24), and # Root Domains Linking to Domain (122 vs 15). The main difference is that the competitor has the exact phrase as part of their domain. Other than that, the phrase (on my client's site) is used in title tags, heading tags, and throughout page content. I can provide additional information if necessary, but does anybody have any general advice about this scenario?

What's the value of Exact Match Keyword Domains vs. Company Name Domains?
Hey Mozers, I was in a discussion this morning about the value of Exact Match Keyword domains vs. a company name domain and wanted to get a little more clarification. Let's say we are doing a site for a company called Favored Dental, and they have had the domain favoredental.com for quite a while and have their authority built up in it. Is it better to have favored-dental.com or favoreddental.co or keep its current form? The reasoning behind the alternate domains would be they have the exact match keyterm, in this case lets say "Favored Dental" is the keyterm we were going after. To my knowledge EMDs aren't as relevant as they'd use to be as Google would rather branding of companies instead of keyterm domains? Is this correct, or do EMDs of keywords you're going after hold higher authority? Thanks for the clarification!

Understanding Competitive Domain Analysis
I'm finding this site great for getting at the information that I need but I am having trouble understanding what I see as conflicting Competitive Domain Analysis and keyword research results for companies in my sector. My company is new to the sector we are in and I am tracking two really well established leaders (Moma and Poppa bear) and one company that is new to the sector (baby Bear) too. When looking at the competitive domain analysis the Momma and Poppa Bear wipe the floor with baby bear (and of course me!) on every single criteria; but when I see who is actually ranking best for the most competitive keywords for our sector who wins...baby bear; I just dont understand it. What is the reason for the disparity between the domain analysis and actual performance? Many thanks, Sinead

for the exact search 'how to get a girlfriend' in google? How-to-get-a-girlfriend.com and howtogetagirlfriend.com are taken, so I just wanted to see if this was close enough to help google.
