Tag clouds and leaking link juice
-
We have a popular blog, but SEOmoz analytics is telling us that theblog homepage has greater than 100 links and this needs to be addressed.
One very big source of links on the blog homepage is the tag cloud. Can tag clouds be a source of link juice dilution?
If so, is should we consider either removing the tag cloud altogether (not essential to the site) or consider doing no-follows?
Thanks.
-
thank you. this was very helpful.
-
You could add a google analytics event tracking code to the links in the tag cloud. Then you'll soon see if it's being used.

Doug...
I don't know if users really use it. I suspect not and I think our preference would be to have users use the category links to nav.
How can/would I know if our users use the tag cloud links on the blog page?
-
Thank you. I understand what you're saying.
-
Do you visitors actually use it? If they don't then I'd get rid of them without hesitation. IF they do, then I'd think about why, and what I could do to improve my navigation/architecture to help people find what they want... and then get rid of the tag cloud.
Instead of spraying the lawn, water the plants you really care about! Make sure you have links to your most important, most popular/useful content.

Removing the tag cloud links from the homepage will not preserve more link juice on/for the homepage.
Removing the tag cloud links from the homepage will preserve more link juice to be passed on to other pages that the homepage links to.
-
Thanks Adam...
So given that there are almost 50 tag clouds linking off the blog homepage, removing the tag cloud sounds appropriate , in order to preserve the link juice for the blog homepage. Right?
-
Yes, a tag cloud with a bunch of links will dilute the link juice flowing to your other links. Adding nofollow to the tag cloud links will not help.

I have device optimized images for desktop, tablet, and mobile. Should I put the same description, caption and alt tag for each? Not sure if this will hurt me or help?

Products To Products links
Hi,
Image & Video Optimization | | Tormar
I want to create good internal linking structure, but I have a problem with product to product link. E.g. I have a new model of product: iPhone 6, and old iPhone 5, and I want to put link from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, but if I make link like this, I dropped for a few positions. Also, if I have similar product e.g. photography Kit for iPhone 6, and I put a link from this additional product to iPhone 6, I will lose my position.

How much can our page title, URL and alt-tag differ without negatively affecting SEO?
We are a bridal store selling wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses. We are wanting to know how much our URL and page title can differ, whilst still optimising SEO. For example, for the category Wedding Dresses, the URL contains wedding dresses, so can we use " the best wedding dresses in Sydney" in the page title? For the bridesmaid dresses (URL is /bridesmaiddresses/) can we use " buy best bridesmaid dresses online in Australia"? Can we use terms such as "buy best black dress in sydney", "buy online in australia" or "shop online in sydney" in the alt-tag, additional from the page title .i.e. adding extra keywords in the alt-tag that do not appear in the title? Would this be classified as keyword stuffing? In our main categories .e.g. Wedding Dresses, can we add "best wedding dress store", "buy wedding dresses from best wedding store in sydney" in the alt-tag? Thank you.

Is it a legal requirement for a website to have alt tags for all images?
Someone told me it is a legal requirement for a website to have alt tags on all of their images. Is this right? Or is this bad for SEO?

Link building to Google+ profile: any local SEO value?
Has anyone found value in building links to Google+ profile for local seo rankings? My gut tells me that it will, but I am not 100% sure. If it does, then does that mean that all the traditional SEO factors that would go into ranking a site organically also work for ranking locally for certain keywords? So far, I have found that the best thing for moving up rankings is reviews on Google+, but then does that make local SEO (from a high view point) just a race for high reviews and building the most citation? I am feeling like the differentiator for local SEO is UN-structured citations and links to Google+ profiles. Any thoughts? See you at MozCon!

Local SEO: Links with the citations so should I slow down?
Hello, There seems to be some nofollow and dofollow links building as I add structured citations. Is this a reason to slow down the building citation process if you want the links to count? Do they help organic SEO?

Footer links vs Homepage Content
We are redesigning this site http://www.crystalshop.co.uk/ but not reinstating the ecommerce yet so the primary aim of the site is to increase foot traffic in the shops. The list of shops on the RHS of the homepage is really messy but is useful. I would like to move these to the footer... is this a bad idea? If this is, is it a bit of a gamble to move it to the bottom of the homepage rather than higher up as it is? We are already featuring a link to the shop finder page but I want to get the locations in as prominent place as possible but it's quite a long list!

Embedded Video Sharing Count As Links?
I am considering using Wistia as a video platform to host video content I don't want listed on YouTube. One of the features they have (I bet they all do) is to allow other webmasters to embed the video on their site as well. If a webmaster embed's one of my Wistia videos on their site, do I get link juice? ...or is this only helpful to help spread branding?
