Gah, unfairly hit by massive google penalty :/
-
Hi Guys,
We're the folk behind http://wpmu.org and have just been hit by a massive fall in google referrals, see attached
There's no reason in webmaster tools for this, were not engaging in any spammy or dodgy practices and are a massively established and well staffed news *& tutorial site for WordPress (one of the biggest, in fact!)
We've upgraded WP, and requested a referral, but without actually knowing what's going on it's extremely hard to figure out what to do
Maybe we're a wrong hit regarding this: http://www.webmonkey.com/2012/04/googles-new-search-algorithm-to-crack-down-on-black-hat-webspam/ ?
At the moment pretty much the only thing I can think of is one of our authors being dodgy, but I don't think they would be, and I don't know how to go about finding out.
Anyway, if you guys could take a look and let us know anything you think might be up, and share any advice that'd be super super appreciated!
Cheers, James

@Georg, tanks for that!
@Boodreaux, ugh, that's shocking service, wasn't like that back in the day
-
James,
If you want more responses you may need to post a new discussion question with your latest information you found out. Your question is far down the list now and only a 4 people are in this thread.
-
Hi James,
your are not alone. Our site lost 50% traffic...
Here is our thread: http://www.seomoz.org/q/lost-50-google-traffic-in-one-day-panic

Still looking, it looks like it could be victim of our own success / couple of minor errors around http://edublogs.org
Essentially we tried to remove all links from blogs there to wpmu.org back in the day, but missed, literally, about 3.
And then there's been a lot of splogging on edublogs of late that we're really working hard to clamp down on.
And they are choosing the theme with the wpmu.org links on it.... so 2+2 it coudl be that.
We've now removed all links and are splogging like crazy, using http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/anti-splog/ (one of our plugisn too).
And have p[ut in another request.
Would love to hear from a Mozzer too, given our 4+ year membership here (in which time we've asked like 4 questions
-
Ouch...great looking site. Very scary. Hope to hear back from you on what the issue was in your being dropped so low.
-
Thanks guys.
@Kevin on edublogs it's only the homepage that links to wpmu.org, sub blogs only link to WPMU DEV (separate site) which hasn't been impacted.
Given the prominence of our other sites in the WP space, and the relevance of the topic, I'm not sure if removing links from them to wpmu.org would necessarily be the best approach?
Thanks for other link and we'll go and post in the wbmaster forums now too.
@stubby yes, no paid links, only footer links are from themes (like the 'Powered by Wordpress MU' ones and at least 3+ years old), not at all odd for a WP provider either.
Open to other thoughts / ideas!

I have an opinion that many of the other sites that I have seen recently have one of a few things going on.
Either -
- They have crappy links that were bought on blog networks (which I didn't see in your case)
- They have footer links that they installed when people used their services (as in "designed by ABC web Design),
- They have footer links that were installed when people used their software (Powered by Wordpress MU)
The net result that I see from any of these scenarios is that the site in question gets lots and lots of anchor text links from lots of unrelated sites all over the place, which makes the "designed by" or "powered by" links look like an unnatural build, or possibly even look like paid links.
This is just my opinion and it could be wrong - but I am seeing it more and more.
-
I would cut down the sitewide links, in particular the ones on other domains you own. I see the edublogs "main site" has a image link to wpmu.org; too lazy to check the user blogs. Other than that, I don't see anything that would get you hit by the penguin update.
You might have better luck if you posted in the Webmaster product forums at google.
They also just release this form for people who think they've been wrongly affected.

Google Tag Manager for cross-domain tracking
Anybody experience with setting up Google Tag Manager to contain the Analytics script including cross domain tracking? We have a marketingwebsite .com / .com.br and an application running in a subdomain, but have always had some difficulties in getting the cross domain tracking working. Would be great to be able to exchange some experience with fellow Mozzers.

Google Analytics, new property or views?
Hi All We have an existing Google analytics account which was customised relatively heavily a few years back, with custom variables, e-commerce tracking and the a large number of filters. We have determined that the custom variables and e-commerce tracking, at least for now, are no longer required and actually complicating our lives. We want to simplify the account and add a fresh set of goals and events. Our initial train of thought was to create an entire new property with the usual views, raw, test, main etc. We are proposing to retain both properties (6 months) so we can still do some comparative stuff. We're now wondering if we should retain the existing property and just create new views, the downside being that whilst we can compare data with previous periods it's meaningless to some degree as the filters etc are different. The plus of more views is that we're not firing the tag twice retaining two properties. Views and opinions welcome. Thanks

Google Analytics
Looking at a client's analytics - one page doesn't seem to record 'average time on page' data (it just displays 0.00 despite it receiving traffic) This isn't an issue for the rest of the website's pages. Any idea? http://www.smilestyledental.co.uk/ppc/general-dentistry-at-smile-style.html thanks for any help!

Have we been penalised by Google?
Hello guys, Looking for some help here hope someone will be able to point us to the right direction, we have been scratching our heads for months! Basically our Google rankings and organic traffic from Google have dropped signficantly in the last 12 months. At one point we ranked as high as page 3 with the term "holiday lettings". Now we are on page 16, and sometimes not found at all... This has been the case for months now. Curiously, Bing and Yahoo have been much more generous to us, we have been and still consistently rank at No. 2 with the same term. We are in the vacation rental industry - our website is www.alphaholidaylettings.com and most of the sites that rank above us are of much less relevancy, quality and authority. We just could not understand why we would rank so poorly on Google (both US and UK). Organic traffic has also dropped by more than 50% steadily in the last 12 months. One thing we thought might have affected our site is the quality of content. Most content/listings on our site are user generated, and it is not uncommon for users to copy and paste details from an existing listing that they have on another site. Having said that, the same would apply to our competitors too. In this case, might Panda or Penguin have had any negative effects on our seo? We have been adding unique content to the site in the form of a blog and "Holiday Feature" articles. Could the actual design/structure/coding of our pages contribute to our poor rankings too? Any opinions or feedback is much appreciated! Thanks guys, Tom

Why is Webmaster Tools not Linking Correctly Google Analytics?
I have a global site with .com as the US site and then /country for all other markets i.e. .com/uk .com/de etc. Each site has it's own WMT profile. Each site has it's own GA profile. Since Google added Search Engine Optimization to the GA interface, I can't track these sites separately under this new feature. It seems to me that it can only be associated with a single WMT profile at a time or rather that WMT can only be associated with a single GA profile at a time. The numbers for the UK and US site are identical, but when I try and link the UK WMT account with GA it removes it from the US profile and vice versa.

Home page rankings disappeared - Google Penalty?
Hi, I have a clients website that I have been working on for a few months now. On-page SEO for home page is A for all target keywords. All Domain / subdomain / external link data etc. much stronger than all competition. But approx 3 months ago (before Panda update) all home page rankings (except 1 keyword) dropped out sight in Google rankings. 3 months later, still can't work out why. Sometimes rankings come back onto page 9 or so then drop out again. Deeper pages are not effected, just the Home page. Looks like a Google penalty to me but can't work out why. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Website is - www.marrikashairextensions.com Many thanks
