When is link building an SEO priority? (vs. something else)
-
I'm considering hiring an SEO vendor for link building, and assessing whether or not my website really needs link building, vs. another SEO priority (for instance, I KNOW there's an opportunity for local SEO). What factors should I look at to determine if link building is a high priority? Should I just compare the number links my site has with competitors, using a tool like Open Site Explorer?

My company just put up a website recently and I put speed, content, design and architecture first. But then when I did links this past month it gave rankings a huge boost. I still need to do on page optimization but have decided to design great landing pages first, then a blog then onsite seo last. As a warning though I would choose industry links and some general high reputation links to start. My website domain authority doubled last month and my page authority increased 33%.
I did the links myself. I would also be very careful about others building links especially the kinds that are automated.

check out yext.com. Citations are more important for local factors than link building. Manual link building almost becomes too tough and time consuming unless you are running your own affiliate gateways or running your own website where top position in the SERPs means A LOT, and you don't have to spend a lot of time talking with clients, making business deals - you know the whole 9 yards for agency stuff

Links are website fuel. A fueled up Pinto can beat an unfueled Formula 1 car in a race, so from my perspective, link building is always an SEO priority. You can rank a page with poor to mediocre on-page optimization if you have enough high quality links pointing to it.
Put your effort into acquiring links and make sure you have the on-page basics covered (keyword in title tag, meta description, h1 tag, page copy).

Thanks to both of you, I appreciate your reply and that post was helpful. The website I'm talking about is very well optimized w/onpage content, conversion points, etc., and has a strong number of links compared to competition. Local SEO could really bring some strong results for them, so I might go that route.

Local SEO involves link building too, so not sure what your question is there?
If you're looking to improve your SEO, you have to look at 2 things: your onsite optimization (is your site optimized for search engines?) and offsite factors (link building). If your site is already good, you should focus on link building. If your site could use some work, it could make sense to focus on that first before focusing on links.
Here is a good article on the topic:

I think link building can become a priority after these other important factors are in place.
Easily Crawlable
Good architecture and UX
Nice design
Great content
Acceptable conversion rate

Subdomain links vs root domain links? Are the less valuable?
I am determining the value of links we get. Is a link on a subdomain less valuable vs one on the root domain? How less valuable would you consider a subdomain link? For example blog.site.com vs site.com/blog What other metrics would you take into consideration for the value of a subdomain link?

Link Building Companies
Hi Moz Community, I'm currently looking into hiring a link building company. I found one promising lead out of Boise, ID who only specializes in white hat link building tactics but unfortunately, I found some tainted reviews as well. Any one has adice/recommendations on great companies out there? Many thanks!

Link building external trusted help out there?
Hi there guys and Girls, I am a newbie to the seo world but learning quickly. Unhappy with seo services offered for startups I have taken on the role myself for my website. I think so much of what can be learnt online here I can implement myself with a few hours of work each week. So my dilemma! I have lots of ideas of for content which i know will be valuable and I was considering outsourcing just for link building (the long haul work) The trouble is I am wary of who to use and if such service is out there? I have tried searching on o'desk and freelancer etc but I guess i am too frightened of spammy links or postings on irrelevant sites. I guess initially I am looking for someone who can help my link building campaign whilst I build up my own blogging contacts etc. Does anyone know if these types of services exist? and if any are recommended for small companies? Thanks Michelle

Your opinion of link building strategy
Hi all, I just started working on the optimization of highly competitive keywords on one website. I already started posting articles in reputable directories, but as you know, more quality links are needed. To do that I created the following strategy: (see the uploaded image or http://i.imgur.com/9HCiM.png) The idea is to buy new domain and build page rank to this domain by other 3,4 domains that I will buy with PR3. Those 3 domains will contain low quality text generated by spinner just to keep that PR. Then those 3 domains will give PR to the newly created website which will contain only professionally written information and sometimes will give links to me. At the end I will get high quality links. I know it's hard work, but posting PR articles will not be enough. I will continue to spy the competition via SEOMoz OSE but for now that is the idea that I have for quality links. Share your opinion 🙂 9HCiM.png

Selling link building - Show me the money !
Week after week we get enquiries for Link building services. Time and time again we are losing out on contracts and deals... My stance - We work on your site for a period of time doing link building so 2 days in the month a link building member will research competitors , yadi , yadi, ya 🙂 You get the picture right... But the customers are being told by less scrupulous companies the numbers of links they will receive. Impossible unless you are buying them right ? So it reaches that point when you start questioning being 100% honest... What advice would you give me on selling link building services...

Link Building - Goals and Expectations
I'm trying to set concrete goals around link building and I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on what is reasonable to expect. If we are reaching out to 10 sites a day in a non-spammy, relevant way, is it reasonable to think that we'll get 5 links back, 2 links? I just don't know. Tips and tricks are welcome too!!
