Temporary redirects
-
why is wordpress creating redirects from trackbacks and what can i do about it?
according to seomoz i have several of these kinds of temporary redirects:
http://redlandsorthodontics.com/about-us-2/meet-the-staff/redlands-orthodontics/trackback/
redirects to
http://redlandsorthodontics.com/about-us-2
what are trackbacks anyway since i didn't purposely create them?

thanks for pointing that out

great info.thank you

There's a deeper issue going on - the pages with trackbacks aren't actually accessible from your site's menu the way it is now - these pages:
- http://redlandsorthodontics.com/orthodontics/children/child_braces-2/
- http://redlandsorthodontics.com/testimonials/redlands_braces_for_children/
All the pages with the trackbaks are being linked to (accidentally) from images.
Try to follow this chain
- This image -> http://redlandsorthodontics.com/wp-content/uploads/redlands_braces_for_children.jpg
- on this page -> http://redlandsorthodontics.com/testimonials/
- links to -> http://redlandsorthodontics.com/?attachment_id=362
- which redirects to -> http://redlandsorthodontics.com/testimonials/redlands_braces_for_children/
- which has the trackback -> http://redlandsorthodontics.com/about-us-2/meet-the-staff/redlands-orthodontics/trackback/ on it which has the 302 redirect.
You need to:
- Remove the links from the images. Go to media->select an image->edit->and select "link to NONE"
That should straighten it out.

To answer one question first - a trackback basically is an alert to you, the blog owner, when someone links to your post.
Great definition over at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trackbacks
Wordpress often auto-creates redirects, as this saves you, the blog owner from considering these things and it minimises 404-Not Found... the main things that create a redirect are posts being moved or deleted, the same with comments.
As to whether you NEED to do anything about the redirects SEOmoz software is finding for you will depend on whether those addresses being redirected
- exist on-site
- Are linked to on your site
- OR are in the SERPs
Do a site:redlandsorthodontics.com search in Google/Bing to see if those pages exist in the SERPs.
The only thing I would say is that if the pages being redirected don't exist, or shouldn't exist, and probably won't be brought into existence then go into the .htaccess file and look for the offending URL and make it a 301 Redirect (Permanent Redirect, rather than temporary), as there's no need for it to be temporary.

301 Redirects
Hello, All. Hopefully this will be an easy question for some of you. I have a (WordPress) site with the format of: http://www.site.com/folder-old/page-old/ I have since re-named both the parent and sub-folders to (example): http://www.site.com/folder-new/page-new/ Everything is working well EXCEPT I am also trying to redirect visitors from the old URL/structure to the new. I have a 301 redirect setup as the following: Redirect 301 /folder-old/page-old/ http://www.site.com/folder-new/page-new/ -- But it doesn't seem to be working. Not sure if this is something finicky with WordPress or if the redirect is incorrect. Thank you.

Redirect chains after a site migration
Hi A clients site was originally canonicalised to the www. from the non www versions Now its migrating to an international config of www.domain.com/uk and www.domain.com/us with the existing pages/urls (such as www.domain.com/pageA) 301'd to the new www.domain.com/uk/pageA for example Will this will create a 301 redirect chain due to the existence of the original canonicalised urls or is the way that works 'catch all' so to speak, and automatically update the canonical 301 redirects of the non www old architexcture url's to the new international architecture URL's ? I presume so but just want to check ? cheers dan

How to know what pages are 301 redirecting to me?
Hi! It is easy to know if somebody is spam linking your website, looking i.e., looking at open site explorer to analyse the links profile. But, is it possible to know if a competitor of mine is redirecting a bad domain to main with a 301 redirect, thus transfering any bad SEO reputation to me? Best Regards, Daniel

Question concerning a 302 Redirect
Hi! I've already done some research on redirects, but I still have a question concerning a 302 redirect implemented at the homepage of a website. The Website www.domainA.com has a 302 redirect to www.domainA.com/content/.... Also all subsequent pages have the /content/ directory in their URLs: e.g domainA.com/content/products First thing I was wondering about, was the use of a redirect to a new site using an additional directory /content/... Why would anyone do this? Would it be enough to replace the 302 with a 301 redirect, or would you recommend to change the entire structure and eliminate this /content/ directory? The most logical structure would be www.domainA.com/products/.., and not www.domainA.com/content/products, right? Second thing: Given that 302 means temporary redirect, what are the actual implications when redirecting from domainA.com to domainA.com/content? I've heard that 302 redirects don't pass linkjuice and are detrimental for the site's rankings... What are the actual implications concerning the example above (302 redirect from domainA.com to domainA.com/content ? Would be great to get some advice about the first problem and maybe some insights about the second one concerning 302s in general. Thanks in advance! Cheers, Chris

Wordpress 301 redirects
I use wordpress as CMS on a few sites and I noticed that word press automattically places 301s if I change a url etc. I believe it does it by having the following in the .htaccess file: BEGIN WordPress<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine OnRewriteBase /RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-fRewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-dRewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> END WordPress Should I use this? I feel like it limits my control over the 301s.
