Do I need a 301 redirect on htaccess if Apache is already configured to serve?
-
Apache is set up to serve both www and non-www versions the same content. Do I still need to put a 301 redirect in the htaccess file?
-
Yes, in that case, use the code that adds www. Then anyone who links to or attempts to visit the non-www, will be 301 redirected to the www version.
-
It's using www. in the SERPs. Does that mean I need to use the "## adds www"?
Thanks!
-
If you're launching the site fresh, just pick one and stick with it. If you've got an existing site, see which version Google returns in the SERPs, and use that.
-
But if it's Apache and set up to display the same content no matter which - how do I know which of the codes to add?
-
It's best practice to only serve a particular site one way or the other, either www or non-www, and only have one URL available for the homepage. This prevents any related duplicate content issues, and ensures you always get backlinks back to the right domain. I'd definitely recommend you add a rewrite rule to your .htaccess, using one of the following examples.
removes www
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://yourdomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]
adds www
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

301 redirecting old content from one site to updated content on a different site
I have a client with two websites. Here are some details, sorry I can't be more specific! Their older site -- specific to one product -- has a very high DA and about 75K visits per month, 80% of which comes from search engines. Their newer site -- focused generally on the brand -- is their top priority. The content here is much better. The vast majority of visits are from referrals (mainly social channels and an email newsletter) and direct traffic. Search traffic is relatively low though. I really want to boost search traffic to site #2. And I'd like to piggy back off some of the search traffic from site #1. Here's my question: If a particular article on site #1 (that ranks very well) needs to be updated, what's the risk/reward of updating the content on site #2 instead and 301 redirecting the original post to the newer post on site #2? Part 2: There are dozens of posts on site #1 that can be improved and updated. Is there an extra risk (or diminishing returns) associated with doing this across many posts? Hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help!

Another 301 redirect question - penalty?
Good Morning, We have 2 sites have images and minimal text on them. The images have links that point to a 3rd site that facilitates eCommerce. Question: If we 301 redirect these sites permanently to yet a 4th site… 1) Does it violate any G’s guidelines 2) Should we delete the links embedded in the images (as they point to the 3rd site) Thanks

Will Google index a 301 redirect for a new site?
So here is the problem... We have setup a 301redirect for our clients website. When you search the clients name it comes up with the old .co.uk website. We have made this redirect to the new .com website. However on the SERPs when it shows the .co.uk it shows the old title pages which currently say 'Holding Page'. When you click on that link it takes you to the fully functioning .com website. My question is, will the title tags in the SERPs which show the .co.uk update to the new ones from the .com? I'm thinking it will be just a case of Google catching up on things and it will sort itself out eventually. If anyone could help I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks Chris

301 Redirect "wildcard" question
I have been looking at the SEOmoz redirect guide for some advice but I can't seem to find the answer : http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection I have lots of URLs from a previous version of a site that look like the following: sitename.com/-c-25.html?sort=2d&page=1 sitename.com/-c-25.html?sort=3a&page=1 etc etc. I want to write a redirect so whenever a URL with the terms "-c-25.html" is requested it redirects to a specified page, regardless of what comes after the question mark. These URLs were created by our previous ecommerce software. The 'c' is for category, and each page of the cateogry created a different URL. I want to do these so I can rediect all of these URLs to the appropraite new cateogry page in a single redirect. Thanks for any help.
